This month’s scripture is from I Corinthians 15:50-54, "Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory." CHANGE. According to Webster's dictionary, change means to make different in some particular way; to make radically different; to give a different position, course, or direction to; to replace with another; to make a shift from one to another; to undergo a modification. Sooner or later we all will have to make a change for whatever reason. Change 'what' you may ask? Consider changing the way we think, the way we talk, the way we walk, and our attitudes. The list can go on and on and on. Some changes are good and some are not. Change can also be for the best. Do you really want to remain the same all the time? Do you want to improve anything, some things, or nothing at all? God wants us to change our lives if we are not following the guidelines He has laid out for us in the bible. Let's try changing our attitude, changing or improving our way of doing things, and changing the way we react in stressful situations to name a few. After all, change is inevitable.

We hope everyone enjoyed reading the July 2012 issue of the Church Chat. However, all the praise, all the honor, and all the glory, belong to God, because without Him, the Church Chat would not be possible. Thank you for the many, many compliments and words of encouragement.

STAND UP FOR YOURSELF! (Without Stepping On Others)By Heidi Smith Luedtke, PhD A coworker slacks off and you’re stuck with extra work, or company’s coming and you want more help cleaning the house. What do you do? Many smart, successful women stay silent. But when you grudgingly work late or mutter about your lazy husband, negativity prevails.

What Assertiveness Is and Isn’tAssertive women speak up for their own self-interests. When they’re unable or unwilling to grant a request, they say no. When they have a good idea, they share. Assertive women don’t let bad feelings fester; they address broken promises and unmet expectations directly.

Assertiveness is not a watered-down version of aggression, says Judith McClure, PhD, author of Civilized Assertiveness for Women. It isn’t hostile. Women can stand up for themselves without stepping on others or putting them down. It is both respectful and self-respecting.

Making Everyone (Else) Feel GoodAs women, we define ourselves in large part by our relationships to others. We’re friends, coworkers, daughters, sisters, wives and mothers. From childhood, girls are told they should put others first and do what it takes to keep the peace, says Marjorie Bauman, a counselor and career coach.

Women are expected to be nurturing and compassionate and to value connection more than achievement. As a result, women may worry they’ll be labeled aggressive, pushy or arrogant if they stand up for themselves. The risk of rejection can create paralyzing anxiety and apprehension. So they put their own interests aside.

Just Say No!If you respond to almost any request with an automatic “yes,” here’s help.

1. Slow down. Practice suspended civility, says author Judith McClure. Say, “Let me check my schedule and get back to you.” Think it through when you aren’t under pressure. 2. Get the details. Repeat the request back to ensure you understand. Then clarify exactly what, when and how you’re expected to help. 3. Check your feelings. Is this something you’ll enjoy? Do you have time for it? Is it required? If not, politely decline. 4. Say no. Say “That won’t work for me,” “I can’t,” or “I’ve made another commitment.” And don’t apologize. You don’t want to sound weak or indecisive.

The Price of PassivityIf we don’t pursue or protect our own interests, friends and colleagues may ask for loans or favors and expect us to respond cheerfully time after time. The boss may expect we’ll sacrifice family time to work extra hours because we haven’t said no in the past. And she may overlook you when it’s

time for pay raises and promotions, cautions Bauman, because your passive approach eclipses the solid skills you have to offer.

A do-nothing approach can destroy your self-respect and the respect of others. Ignoring your own needs can create intense resentment, too. If you often think, “He never asks what I think,” or “She never helps me when I need it,” you need to speak up.

HIS BROKEN HEART

When he saw the crowds, he felt sorry for them because they were hurting and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.

MATTHEW 9:36

I can’t understand it. I honestly cannot.

Why did Jesus [die on the cross]? Oh, I know, I know. I have heard the official answers. “To gratify the old law.” “To fulfill prophecy.” And these answers are right. They are. But there is something more here. Something very compassionate. Something yearning. Something personal.

What is it?

Could it be that his heart was broken for all the people who cast despairing eyes toward the dark heavens and cry the same “Why?” Could it be that his heart was broken for the hurting?

I imagine him, bending close to those who hurt. I imagine him listening. I picture his eyes misting and a pierced hand brushing away a tear.... He who also was once alone, understands.

No Wonder They Call Him the Savior

FOR THE FAMILYThe Word of God establishes the family as the most important Christian social unit in our society and gives us guidance for proper relationships so that we might be everything God chooses for us, both individually and corporately. These scriptures will help you learn more about the promises for your family, God’s guidance for a better family relationship, and how God truly wants to bless and direct every Christian family for His glory.

GOD GUIDES IN YOUR RELATIONSHIPS

“WITH YOUR NATION”Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and thou shalt have praise of the same: For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he beareth not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that doeth evil. Wherefore ye must needs be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. For this cause pay ye tribute also: for they are God’s ministers, attending continually upon this very thing. Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour.

Romans 13:1-7

Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme; Or unto governors, as unto them that are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers, and for the praise of them that do well.

1 Peter 2:13, 14

THE LITTLE BOOK OF PRAYER

METHOD

Love to pray – feel often during the day the need for prayer, and take trouble to pray. Prayer enlarges the heart until it is capable of containing God’s gift of Himself.

MOTHER TERESA A Gift for God

I live in the spirit of prayer. I pray as I walk, when I lie down, and when I rise. And the answers are always coming.

GEORGE MÜLLER An Hour with George Müller

PASTOR GARTH G. GITTENSFOCUS ON THE FAMILY NIGHT

I am of the firm opinion that the root cause of breakdown in our communities is a breakdown in our families and it’s time for the church to return it’s focus on family life and family values. To this end Wednesday nights at Calvary are about to change, instead of Bible Study as usual Wednesday nights are now titled “Focus On The Family Nights”.

6:00 – 6:55 pmThe night begins with a hot meal – at no charge – served between 6:00 pm and 7:00 pm this is to cater to people who come directly from work and children coming directly from school. The menu will vary, but along lines of Burgers &French Fries, Hot Dogs, Spaghetti and Meat Balls, Hot Wings etc.

At this time we will have a homework corner set up where kids can complete their homework under supervision and may even receive help.

The idea is to afford parents a measured mid-week break from the rigorous routine of school-age parenting.

7:00 – 7:30 pm During this time we gather in the upper sanctuary for praise and worship. The idea at this time is twofold: to allow our praise and worship team to introduce the congregation to new praise songs and simultaneously to allow members of our community who work on Sundays an opportunity to worship with us.

7:35 – 8:25 pmThis is our Education hour: we break up into specially designed classes for the purpose of practice oriented Bible Study.

THE JOY OF BEINGA WOMAN

Getting a cell phone so you can blab even more with your girlfriends

Putting up with the woman beside you in the checkout line who is annoyed by your crying children and knowing that somewhere, someday she’ll regret it

Never being forced to make conversation with the person next to you in a public bathroom.

Knowing the importance of having stashes of Advil

The glamour and splendor of red nail polish on your toes. (I like’ em as fire engine red as I can get’ em.)

Someone little coming up to you and saying, “You’re the best mommy in the whole world.”

50 AWESOME PRE AND POST-WORKOUT SNACKSby Kellie Davis

18. Turk-cado pasta: Add 2-4 ounces (or a palm-sized amount) of roasted turkey and 3-4 avocado slices to ½ cup cooked whole-wheat pasta for some enviable eats.

19. Wafflewich: Spruce up this classic by combining 1 frozen Kashi waffle with 2 teaspoons of almond butter and 1 teaspoon of jam.

20. Better than a PB Cup: A half-cup cooked oats with 1 teaspoon defatted peanut flour, a dash of stevia, and a sprinkling of cocoa powder on top — a concoction from the kitchen of Greatest contributor David Butler.

21. Veggie omelet: Add a little more color to your diet by combining 2 whole eggs shaken with 1 teaspoon of water cooked with 1 cup sautéed seasonal veggies.

22. Rice con leche: Got a long way to run? Fuel up with ½ cup cooked rice, covered with ½ cup milk, a scatter of raisins, and a dash of cinnamon on top.

23. Sports drink: An 8-ounce low sugar sports drink (keep it under 10 grams of sugar) will do the trick if you’re in a crunch. For a little more fuel, add a scoop of BCAA powder— branch chain amino acids that help maintain muscle and tissue health.

24. Hearty salad: Need some greens? Try 1 cup of salad greens with assorted veggies, 1 hardboiled egg, and a drizzle of EVOO and

vinegar, or your favorite low-fat dressing.

25. Energy gel: Got a long way to go? Slurp down a energy gel (like Gu) prior to an endurance workout.

Post-Workout Snacks

After a tough gym session, post-workout snacks are an imporant way to restore energy and rebuild muscle, too. Downed within two hours after exercise, protein-packed shakes and snacks are a great way to rebuild tissue that breaks down during exercise. Here are 25 ways to end that workout on a high note:

26. Protein pancakes: From the kitchen of Greatist contributor Laura Skladzinski, mix 4 egg whites, ½ cup rolled oats, ½ cup low fat cottage cheese, 1/8 teaspoon baking powder, and ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract. Cook on preheated griddle (medium low heat) until it bubbles, then flip and cook another 30-60 seconds. Top with fresh berries or sliced banana.

27. Sweet potato pie shake: This isn’t your grandma’s recipe. Combine 1 scoop of cinnamon bun whey protein, ¼ cup diced cooked sweet potato, 1 cup of ice, and 1 cup vanilla almond milk in the blender — a Kellie Davis original.

28. Chunky Monkey shake: Monkey around with 1 medium banana, 1 tablespoon peanut butter, and 1 cup low-fat chocolate milk blended with ice.

29. Double G shake: Aussie strength coach @Rachel_Guy1 recommends an 8-ounce greens drink (any superfood blend found

at most health food stores) with 1 scoop of glutamine.

30. Double Trouble shake: To lengthen the delivery time of nutrients to your muscles, combine ½ scoop of whey protein blended with ½ scoop slower-digesting casein protein, plus a handful of your favorite fresh or frozen fruit.

31. Bananarama: One medium sliced banana with 1 cup low fat milk — it doesn’t get any easier than this!

32. Protein bar: For a quick, store-bought fix, feed those muscles with a protein bar. Just watch the sugar content. Look for bars with 10-30 grams of protein, less than 10 grams of sugar, and the fewest number of ingredients you can’t pronounce!

33. Beef and squash: Need something hearty? Try a handful of lean roast beef with an equal portion of butternut squash.

34. Tuna crackers: Mix up a batch of light tuna salad for a quick bite. Add two heaping spoonfuls to a handful of whole grain crackers, and chomp away.

35. Bagel with egg whites: Half a medium-sized whole grain bagel with 2 eggs whites makes a great post-workout sandwich.

36. Ants on a raft: The ants go marching… Spread a heap of natural peanut butter over a brown rice cake and top with raisins.

TEST YOUR HEARING

1. Do I “tune out” when more than one person is talking?

2. Am I letting my spouse, best friend, or other family member do most of the talking for me?

3. After a long conversation, am I usually tired or irritable?

4. When I answer people’s questions, do they often appear puzzled or embarrassed by my response?

5. Does it seem like my friends or family are avoiding conversation with me?

Consult your physician if you answered “YES” to one or more of these questions.

DISCOVERING SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL

Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,...let your mind dwell on these things. Philippians 4:8 According to legend, a Chinese emperor once said to his wife, “I notice that our mulberry trees are being damaged. I’d like you to find out what’s wrong.”

The empress discovered that a small, drab colored moth was laying eggs on the leaves. The tiny eggs would hatch into little worms that, after a few days, would spin cocoons and damage the leaves.

Wondering if she could destroy the little cocoons, she dropped one of them into a pot of boiling water. To her surprise, the cocoon began to slowly unwind into a silvery thread. Upon further inspection, the thread proved to be a half mile long!

Thus, through the process of solving a problem, she discovered something beautiful silk.

To me, this story illustrates the importance of attitude when you deal with differences between you and your mate. Like flies at a summer picnic, differences buzz in the ears of many couples, threatening to rob their relationships of their peaceful, accepting love. As humorist Sam Levenson once said, “Love at first sight is easy to understand; it’s when two people have been looking at each other for a lifetime that it becomes a miracle!”

Ironically, these differences may have attracted you to each other in the first place. He was outgoing; she was shy. He was a big spender, which made her feel special because she was a tightwad. He was a hard worker; she was impulsive and fun loving.

At some point after marriage, when you discover that these differences begin to annoy you, it’s time to make a critical choice. Are you going to reject your mate, or accept him or her?

One practical way to demonstrate acceptance is to train your mind to focus on the positive qualities of your mate. As Paul writes in Philippians 4:8 (above), let your mind dwell on what is honorable and lovely in your mate.

These differences are what make you strong as a couple. A friend of mine summarized this principle, “My wife and I had both accepted Christ, but we were shocked to discover that we had never accepted one another.”

Discuss: Make a list of all your differences and how you complement one another. Then make a list of all the positive qualities in your mate. Write out a love letter that is a statement of your acceptance of your mate.

Pray: That you will develop the ability to accept the gift God gave you in your mate.

MARRIAGE HUMOR

PRIVATE GRIEF

A man placed some flowers on the grave of his dearly departed mother and started back toward his car when his attention was diverted to another man kneeling at a grave. The man seemed to be praying with profound intensity and kept repeating, “Why did you have to die? Why did you have to die?” The first man approached him and said, “Sir, I don’t wish to interfere with your private grief, but this demonstration of pain is more than I’ve ever seen before. For whom do you mourn so deeply? A child? A parent?”

The mourner took a moment to collect himself, then replied, “My wife’s first husband.”

GOD CAN HANDLE IT ….MARRIAGEBy Dr. S. M. Henriques

WHEN ADVERSITY COMES

Many years ago, William Shakespeare penned, “Love is an ever-fixed mark that looks on tempests and is never shaken.” We agree. Love is the one thing that enables us to keep pushing forward when everything else is crumbling around us.

If the love of a husband and wife is true, the appearance of adversity actually strengthens their love. Gary Smalley has written, “Suffering has a way of bringing people together; the most important things on earth come into sharper focus.”

Since none of us are exempt from trouble, let us prepare ourselves in advance, knowing that adversity can make a marriage stronger.

A marriage lives, paradoxically, upon those almost impossible times when it is perfectly clear to the two partners that nothing else but pure sacrificial love can hold them together.

Mike Mason

Perhaps true love can best be recognized by the fact that it thrives under circumstances which would blast anything else into small pieces.

E. Havemann

Trust is what enables couples to flourish in the good times and hold together through the bad times.

JOKE FOR YOUR SOUL

LAZY SON

It was 5:00 a.m. and the father went to his son Shawn’s bedroom door, knocked and said, “Son, it’s time to get up. Jump in the shower and we’ve got to leave ASAP to catch any fish.”

Soon it was 5:30 and dad had the coffee brewing, the boat hooked up and he just finished packing the

truck, when he noticed Shawn still wasn’t up.

Furious the dad pounded on his son’s bedroom door a second time and yelled, “Jesus rose from the dead and you can’t even get out of Bed!”

To which the son replies, “Yeah, but it took Jesus three days!!”

DAILY PRAISE FROMTHE BIBLE

Inspiration from the PsalmsBy Dan Dick

I will worship toward thy holy temple, and praise thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: for thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name.

Psalm 138:2

“I believe in God, but I have no use for the Bible. People take it and twist it. and it’s no good to anyone. The Bible just gives some people an excuse to feel superior to other people.”

The young man who expressed these sentiments is right. . . to some extent. God’s Word has been misused many times throughout history. It has a destructive component when used by the wrong people for the wrong reasons, but that is no reason to reject it. What God intends for His Word and what people do with it are two completely different things. God does reveal Himself through His Word, and “it is nearly impossible to come to a deep understanding of Him apart from the Holy Scriptures. God has

magnified Himself through His Word, and enables us to know Him when we read it in a spirit of openness, with a desire for the truth.

PRAYER: Illumine the pages of Your Word, Lord. Bless me with understanding of Your Holy Scripture, and help me to keep an open mind as I learn and grow. Amen.

PROMISES YOU CANCOUNT ON!

Whatever your problems, whatever your needs, the answers are in the Bible. Whatever you’re feeling, whatever you’re suffering, whatever you’re hoping ... the Bible has something to say to you.

GOD’S PROMISES ON “SALVATION”

But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

Romans 5:15 But after that the kindness and love of God our Saviour toward man appeared, Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; ...

Titus 3:4-6

But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: , Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

WHAT JESUS IS SAYING TO YOU

By Peter Wallace

The Lord told me to go, and he promised to send me far away to the Gentiles.

-Acts 22:21

As the apostle Paul recounted his life story and his glorious conversion, he related a conversation with the risen Lord. It was more like a friendly argument. Jesus instructed Paul to

leave Jerusalem because the Jewish leaders wouldn’t accept his message. And it could get dangerous.

Paul didn’t understand. After all, with his impeccable Jewish credentials-even his involvement in the stoning of Stephen, the church’s first martyr-how could they not listen to him?

But Jesus told him to leave and go to the Gentiles. Paul thought he had it all figured out. And it was a good plan. It just wasn’t God’s plan.

If you’ve got your life figured out, you may be shortchanging God’s plan for you. Listen to Him.

GOD’S PROMISES FOR MEN

The Word of God doesn’t tell us about the truth; it is truth.

Charles Swindoll

GOD GIVES FREELY TO MEN“Eternal Hope For Life”

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.

Colossians 3:1-2

Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified. I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.

Galatians 2:16,20

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.” The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs-heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together. For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.

Romans 8:14-18, 24-25

SEASONS OF LOVE

God’s love is steadfast; it remains ... Throughout the years, though seasons change.

When Spring rains fall and grasses green And everywhere new life is seen, He showers His love upon the earth At this bright season of rebirth.

In Summer when the flowers bloom And they waft forth a sweet perfume, He sheds His love like fragrance sweet Upon the hearts that for Him beat.

At autumntide when days grow cold And earth is tinted red, orange, gold, His love’s reflected in these shades That glow throughout the Autumn days.

When Winter sends its stormy blasts And we are held within its grasp, He wraps us in His shawl of love; He’ll never fail us; He is love.

Father, Grant a special blessing on those who teach our children this year. Theirs is not an easy task, and it doesn’t reap much day-to-day glory. But the influence they have on my children

is second only to my own. Sometimes they can utter a word, and it becomes gospel. Sometimes they can breathe life into an author

or an issue or a set of problems, or instill an idea

that becomes a determining factor for a whole lifestyle. May they be aware of-and use carefully

the power concentrated in them. And may I remember to express my appreciation, my thanks,

my gratitude to them.

TRUST MOREFEAR LESS

By Max Lucado

Where God’s love is, there is no fear, because God’s perfect love drives out fear. I JOHN 4:18 NCV

A lot of us live with a hidden fear that God is angry at us. Somewhere, sometime, some Sunday school class or some television show convinced us that God has a whip behind his back, a paddle in his back pocket, and he’s going to nail us when we’ve gone too far.

No concept could be more wrong! Our Savior’s Father is very fond of us and only wants to share his love with us. We have a Father who is filled with compassion, a feeling Father who hurts when his children hurt. We serve a God who says that even when we’re under pressure and feel like nothing is going to go right, he is waiting for us, to embrace us whether we succeed or fail.

He doesn’t come quarreling and wrangling and forcing his way into anyone’s heart. He comes into our hearts like a gentle lamb, not a roaring lion.

CONFIDENCE

Hope springs eternal in the heart of the child of God.

Nothing is ever hopeless when your ways are committed to your Heavenly Father.

God’s power is unlimited; His goodness knows no measure; His mercy knows no end.

No matter what news the day may bring, you can accept it with quiet confidence. Nothing will ever happen to you that is beyond your Father’s loving control.

Your Father constantly watches over you. Not one hair of your head will fall to the ground without His will!

Your confidence for the future is built on an immovable foundation.

THE BIBLE SAYS…Those who trust in the LORD are like Mount Zion, which cannot be shaken but endures forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people both now and forevermore.

Psalm 125:1-2

[Jesus says,] “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from the will of your Father. And even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

8. Cherish your health:If it is good, preserve it.If it is unstable, improve it.If it is beyond what you can improve, get help.

9. Don’t take guilt trips.Take a trip to the mall, even to the next county, to a foreign country, but NOT to where the guilt is.

10. Tell the people you love that you love them, at every opportunity.I love you, my special friend!

MEN OF THE BIBLEBy Dan Hannon

JESUS CHRIST

For the prophets He is the Messiah. For Mary He is a son. For God He is the Son. For Herod He is a threat. For the wise men He is King of the Jews. For the shepherds He is heralded by angels. For Simeon He is the consolation of Israel. For the religious leaders He is a challenger. For His fellow Nazarenes He is an outcast. For the demon-possessed He is the liberator. For the blind He is the giver of sight. For the lame He is the transformer. For the dead He is the reviver. For the hungry multitude He is the provider. For children He is the defender. For sinners He is forgiveness. For the ignorant He is the teacher. For the storm-tossed He walks on water. For the diseased He is the healer. For lost sheep He is the shepherd. For the sins of the world He is the Lamb of God. For Thomas He is an enigma. For Judas Iscariot He is a profit source. For Pontius Pilate He is an annoyance. For witnesses of the Crucifixion He is contemptuous. And for all who receive Him, who believe in His name, He gives power to become children of God.

How could the people of the first century believe that the Messiah had at long last arrived? Jesus Christ was certainly not what they expected. He did not act like a king, or even a priest. He selected commoners, even sinners, for companions and loved the poor, the rich, the young, the old, the Jew,

the Gentile, the persecutor, and the persecuted. There was no one He did not love.

There is no one Jesus Christ does not love. He receives all who come to Him and can be reached instantly by anyone from anywhere. One can never intrude upon Jesus. He waits to hear from you!

WHERE SHOULD I PLACE MY FAITH?Submitted in Memory of

Sis. Priscilla Young

Building on the rock: Safe and solid . .

Believe in God (Hebrews 11:6).

We are to believe that “he is” (Exodus 3:14; Psalm 14:1). We are to believe that “he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him” (Matthew 7:7–8; Isaiah 55:6–7; Acts 15:16–17).

We should believe in God as: (a) the pardoner of our sins as David did (Psalm 51:1, 2, 7, 9), (b) the bearer of our burdens as Nehemiah did (Nehemiah 1:4–11), (c) the source of our strength as Paul did (Philippians 4:13), (d) the place of our safety as David did (Psalm 46:1), ((e) the spring of our hope as John did (1 John 3:1–3), and (f) the crowner of our lives as Paul did (2 Timothy 4:6–8).

Believe in Christ as the Son of God (Acts 16:30–31; John 8:21, 24; 20:30–31). We should believe in Christ as: (a) our Saviour (John 4:42), (b) the King and Lord of our lives (Revelation 17:14), (c) our Mediator and High Priest (1 Timothy 2:5; Hebrews 3:1), and (d) our coming Judge (Matthew 25:31–46).

Faith in Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God, is the basis of our confession unto salvation (Acts 8:36–38; Romans 10:8–10; Matthew 16:16). Believe in the Bible as the truth of God (2 Timothy 3:16–17). We are saved through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth (2 Thessalonians 2:13). The truth is the word of God (John 17:17). Building on the sand: Unsafe and sure to fall . . . The doctrines and commandments of men.The Pharisees worshipped in vain because they taught for doctrines the commandments of men (Matthew 15:9). We are not to give heed to the commandments of men that turn from the truth (Titus 1:14). False teachers. We are to beware of false prophets (Matthew 7:15; Colossians 2:8). False prophets bring damnable heresies (2 Peter 2:1). False teachers are to be marked and avoided (Romans 16:17). Lies. Every tear that has bedewed our cheek and dimmed our eye, every wrinkle that has furrowed our brow, every tribulation that has assailed us, every adversity that has laid us low, and every open grave by which we have stood are but a few of the results obtained from Eve hearing, believing, and obeying a lie (Genesis 3). If we believe a lie, we shall be damned (2 Thessalonians 2:10–12).

BIBLICAL REASONSFOR GIVING

We say the following Bible verses Sunday after Sunday about tithing and giving, but do we really understand what we are saying. Do we really know the spiritual meaning of the words and deeds? Have we asked for God’s discernment and guidance in our daily walk?

Luke 6:38Give and it shall be given unto you . . .

2 Cor 9:6-7He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly . . . and Let each one give as he purposes in his heart.

Malachi 3:10Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse and prove me now herewith saith the Lord of hosts if I will not open the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it.

The following are additional Bible verses to be considered in our daily walk with God and our giving. Calvary Baptist Church is a building where we come to receive God’s word and fellowship with the other children of God. This building has to be maintained and the man of God who brings His Word has to be paid. It remains to be true that we should be able to live in this world but not be of this world. We are to follow Christ. Christ gave freely.

Please read the following Bible verses or take the time to read the whole chapter, ask God to give you the true meaning of these verses and let the Word be your guide in giving.

Heb 7:7- 8Now beyond all contradiction the lesser is blessed by the better. Here mortal men receive tithes; but there He receives them of whom it is witnessed that he lives. (Christ witnesses how we live, share our faith,

fruits of our labor etc. We answer to God not man for our actions.)

1Tim 6:17 - 21 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty not to trust in uncertain riches but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share. Storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life. O Timothy! guard what was comitted to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge. By professing it some have strayed concerning the faith. Grace be with you.Psalm 119:33 - 40 (Read the whole chapter)

Teach me, O Lord the way of Your statutes, And I shall keep it to the end. Give me understanding, and I shall keep your law. Indeed, I shall observe it with my whole heart. Make me walk in the path of Your commandments For I delight in it. Incline my heart to Your testimonies, and not to covetousness. Turn away my eyes from looking at worthless things and receive me in Your way. Establish Your work to Your servant. Who is devoted to fearing you. Turn away my reproach which I dread. For Your judgments are good. Behold, I long for Your precepts, receive me in Your righteousness.

5 WAYS TO GET THE BEST MORTGAGE DEAL

It’s much tougher to get a home loan these days. Lenders now are required to perform more due diligence on mortgage borrowers than in the past. And thanks to the Great Recession, many mortgage shoppers may struggle to pass these stricter tests.

But that doesn’t mean you have to give up hope. Following are five expert suggestions to improve the odds of getting a loan at the best mortgage rate.

Make sure your credit is excellentA mortgage shopper’s most important move is to request a credit report and make sure it is accurate, according to Cindy Tessier, manager of mortgage processing and closing for Navy Federal Credit Union in Vienna, Va.

Tessier says lenders look to a borrower’s credit score when deciding what interest rate to charge, so maintaining a high score is especially important.

“If there is anything negative on your credit report, you need to call the creditor to correct it or to work out a payment plan,” Tessier says. “When you apply for a mortgage loan, be sure to provide documentation of any negative accounts, especially if this is something in dispute.”

Once the error is corrected, go back to the credit reporting agency to see if the negative item has been updated.

Financial experts also recommend paying off collections and credit card balances before applying for a loan.

Todd Dal Porto, a national sales executive with Bank of America Home Loans, says, “Keep your debt low and the amount of credit you’re using under 20 percent of what’s available to you. Always paying your bills on time is one of the best ways to maintain healthy credit.”

Be transparent in the loan application Don’t hide flaws such as credit problems, and don’t fudge information about income or assets.

“Take your time to carefully fill out the loan application as accurately as possible,” Dal Porto says. “Trying to hide credit problems or holding back requested documents can only work against an applicant by delaying the process and possibly even preventing a mortgage approval.”

The lender wants to make sure the borrower has the capacity to repay the debt. So applicants should be prepared to disclose all assets and income, Tessier says.

“If you earn overtime pay or a bonus, be ready to provide documentation for extra income,” Tessier says. “Make sure you document all your assets, including a 401(k), an IRA, CDs and savings, even if you won’t be using those funds for the home purchase.”

Make a big down paymentA large down payment can make a big difference in whether your home loan application succeeds.

“The more you can contribute to the down payment, the more attractive you’ll be to lenders,” says Dal Porto.

Contributions from family members or friends for down payment money are allowed by most loan programs. Lenders typically require such contributions to be accompanied by a gift letter asserting you won’t have to repay the money.

Look beyond interest ratesDon’t focus solely on getting the lowest rate. Evaluate your overall budget, monthly payments and fees.

“A home loan is not just about getting the best deal -- it’s about getting the right mortgage with no surprises so

you can be a successful homeowner,” Dal Porto says.

“Everyone should calculate their own debt-to-income ratio, look at the full cost of homeownership and determine how much they can comfortably afford to spend each month.”

Tessier recommends borrowers do their homework, comparing good faith estimates and making sure they won’t have to pay a prepayment penalty if they decide to refinance in the future.

“Don’t just focus on the interest rate,” Tessier says. “Look at the discount points, origination fees, underwriting fees and document preparation fees when comparing loans. You also need to understand how your loan works, especially if it has an adjustable rate.”

Refinancing: Prepare for the appraisalPlanning a refinance? Tessier says it’s important to “have a realistic expectation of the value of your home.”

“Know your market and consult with a good real estate agent before you apply for a new mortgage,” Tessier says.

Dal Porto recommends making sure the home is in good working order prior to the appraisal. Repair leaky faucets and make sure all areas of the home are easily accessible to the appraiser.

“Give the appraiser a written list, including your purchase date and price, the special features of the home, any home improvements or repairs you have made and the age of items such as the roof, flooring, siding and heating and cooling systems,” Dal Porto says.

BLESSED

If you own just one Bible, you are abundantly blessed 1/3 of the world does not have access to even one.

If you woke up this morning with more health than illness, you are more blessed than the million who will not survive the week.

If you have never experienced the danger of battle, the loneliness of imprisonment, the agony of torture or the pangs of starvation, you are ahead of 500 million people around the world.

If you attend a church meeting without fear of harassment, arrest or torture of death, you are more blessed than almost three billion people in the world.

If you have food in your refrigerator, clothes on your back, a roof over your head and a place to sleep, you are richer than 75% of this world.

If you have money in the bank, in your wallet, and spare change in a dish someplace, you are among the top 8% of the worlds’ wealthy.

If your parents are still married and/or alive, you are very rare, even in the United States.

If you hold up your head with a smile on your face and are truly thankful, you are blessed because the majority can, but most do not.

If you can hold someone’s hand, hug them or even touch them on the shoulder, you are blessed because you can offer God’s healing touch.

If you prayed yesterday and today, you are in the minority because you believe in God’s willingness to hear and answer prayer.

If you believe in Jesus as the Son of God, you are part of a very small minority in the world.

If you can read this message, you are more blessed than over two billion people in the world that cannot read anything at all.

P.S. Pass this along if you think Jesus would want you to!

BEAUTIFULLY WRITTEN

When we wake up in the morning, we have two simple choices. Go back to sleep and dream, or wake up and chase those dreams. Choice is yours ....

Never explain yourself to anyone Because the person who likes you doesn’t need it; and the person who dislikes you won’t believe it.

Don’t let someone become a priority in your life, when you are just an option in their life.

Relationships work best when they are balanced.

STAND UP FOR YOURSELF! (Without Stepping On Others)By Heidi Smith Luedtke, PhD◄Continued From Page Five

Find Your VoiceIt’s common for women to overshoot and behave aggressively when they stand up for themselves, says Bauman, especially if they’ve let angry feelings

build up. Here’s how to speak up assertively and successfully.

Set priorities. Make a list of goals and priorities to guide your actions. When a lunch invitation conflicts with your fitness goals, say, “I’ve made a commitment to exercise at lunchtime, so I’m not able to go with you.”

Listen up. That voice inside is your gut reminding you of what you really want. Perhaps it’s telling you to ask the boss for added responsibility or to find out more about a child care provider before you hire her. Don’t ignore intuition, act on it.

Be direct. Women often try to soften the impact of their assertive words. If you preface opinions with “I may be wrong, but…,” you discount your own wisdom before you share it. Say the truth straight out.

Don’t over-justify. You have every right to speak up, pursue opportunities and set boundaries. There’s no need to explain your feelings about why you want something.

Be constructive, not emotional. You won’t get the results you want if you’re anxious or angry, so calm down before speaking up. Then use “I” statements instead of “you” statements so you aren’t perceived as blaming or dictatorial, advises Bauman.

When you speak your truth thoughtfully and courteously, you build honest, trusting relationships and you stop aggressive and manipulative people in their tracks, McClure says. Be your own best advocate. And when you see another woman stand up for herself, don’t tear her down, cheer her on. We’re all in this together.

101 RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEARBy Nancy Walker Hale

74 I will leave vengeance in the Lord’s hands.

Live peaceably with all men. Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; 1 will repay, saith the Lord. Therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire on his head. ROMANS 12:18-20 KJV

75 I will practice mercy.

Talk and act like a person expecting to be judged by the Rule that sets us free. For if you refuse to act kindly, you can hardly expect to be treated kindly. Kind mercy wins over harsh judgment every time. JAMES 2:12-13 MSG

76 I will do a good deed in secret.

But when you give to someone in need, don’t let your left hand know what your right hand is doing. Give your gifts in private, and your Father, who sees everything, will reward you. MATTHEW 6:3-4 NLT

77 I will carry someone else’s burden.

Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you willful fill the law of Christ. GALATIANS 6:2 NIV

PHOTO ID REQUIRED FOR NOVEMBER 2012 ELECTION

Delaware County Council is alerting residents that they will be required to show an acceptable photo ID, one with an expiration date that is current, to be eligible to vote in the November 6 General Election.

The Pennsylvania Voter ID law was enacted in the spring, and there was a soft roll-out for the Primary Election. Changes in the requirements have been made as recently as Friday, July 20, when the Department of State announced the creation of a new card that can be issued to voters who are not able to provide all the documents they would normally need to obtain a photo ID from PennDOT, such as a birth certificate.

Current information on the Voter ID law is available at the state’s Web site at www.VotesPA.com and there is a link to that site on the County Web site at www.co.delaware.pa.us.

“This is a significant change in the way that people vote in Pennsylvania and it is our goal to ensure that the voting process is accessible and open to all registered voters,” said County Councilman David White, Council’s liaison to the Election Bureau and Voter Registration.

“In talking to residents, we recognize that people have questions and we want to be sure that people have the correct information on what constitutes acceptable photo ID, how they obtain a photo ID and how that impacts people who vote by absentee ballot,” White said.

On March 15, Pennsylvania became the 16th state in the nation to require voters to show photo identification at the polls, starting with the November general election.

Elizabeth Catlett (1919-2012): Artist, Educator and ActivistBy Dorothy G. Kapenstein

On April 5, 2012, the news media of this nation and of many

others as well told of the passing of this multi-talented artist. She was a brilliant

sculptor and painter and an amazing maker of prints as well. She believed that she must use her art for her people. In discussing her feelings about art, she once wrote: “Art must be realistic for me, whether sculpture or print making. I have always wanted my art to service black people-to reflect us, to relate to us, to stimulate us, to make us aware of our potential. We have to create an art for liberation and for life.” In their monumental history of African American artists, Romare Bearden and Harry Henderson spoke about her work: “Her ideas and vision of the role of the black artist and art itself have earned her a unique place in the history of American Art. In her work and in her thinking she addresses the colored peoples of the world – of African, Asian and Latin American countries-as well as all Americans.”

Much of her work focused on the lives of women. She worked mightily for the rights of black women, and also for justice for her sisters of all races and nationalities. She once wrote: “I don’t have anything against men but since I am a woman I know more about women and how they feel. I think that somebody ought to do women. Artists do work with women, with the beauty of their bodies and the refinement of middle-class women, but I think there is a need to express something about the working class Black woman and that’s what I do.”

Elizabeth Catlett was born and educated in Washington, D.C. She and her two older siblings were raised and supported by their widowed mother, Mary Carson Catlett. John Catlett, Elizabeth’s father, died just before she was born. He had been a professor of mathematics at Tuskegee Institute. Elizabeth must have gotten some of her artistic genius and temperament from him. He was a talented wood carver and a fine musician as well. He composed music and played the violin, mandolin and piano.

Early in her childhood, the little girl began to show an aptitude for drawing and painting. Her mother supported and encouraged her. She gave her little daughter art supplies and a workspace of her own. When little Elizabeth entered school, she was also encouraged by her teachers to continue her interest in art. Washington D.C. was a city held in the grip of segregation and the city schools were locked in this pattern. She had the great good luck to be accepted as a student at the famous Dunbar High School of Washington, then one of the top-rated high schools of the nation, even though it was a segregated school. The all-black faculty members were chosen for their outstanding education, talent and devotion to their students. As a result, most students went on to higher education. Elizabeth received an excellent education and also nurturing and encouragement to continue with her interest in art. In 1933, she graduated with high honors. She decided to apply to Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh. She had to take tough entrance exams and supply a portfolio of her art works. She did well in both areas but was rejected because of her race! In later years, she spoke of hearing a school official say: “It’s too bad she’s a Negro, isn’t it?” Elizabeth Catlett never forgot the pain caused by this rejection.

However, it proved to be a blessing in disguise. She decided to attend Howard University in her own hometown. Howard was the first of the historically black colleges to establish a separate art department. She was able to study with excellent teachers. A number of great contributors to African American Art were on the faculty. Elizabeth studied design with Lois Mailou Jones, a renowned painter. James Porter was also a famous black artist. He was the first author to research and publish a book about African American artists when his work Modern Negro Art, appeared in 1933. Elizabeth studied painting, drawing and art history with him. One of the nation’s leading black print makers, James L. Wells taught her printmaking.

Elizabeth Catlett also studied with Alain Locke, Professor of Philosophy. He was the author of the book, The New Negro. This work is still highly regarded and is often used as a college textbook. In this work, Locke urged black artists of the era to study the works of native African artists and to turn to them for inspiration. At first, Elizabeth planned to have a career as a textile designer. She may have been influenced by her studies with Lois Mailou Jones, who was initially interested in fabric design but later switched to painting. Elizabeth followed the same path. She graduated from Howard in 1937 with highest honors and a degree in painting.

The young graduate’s first ideas about a career centered on becoming an art teacher and sharing what she had learned. Her first job took her to the heart of the segregated south in Durham, North Carolina. She was appointed to teach art in a segregated high school and at the same time to be a supervisor of art in eight equally segregated elementary schools.

Elizabeth Catlett (1919-2012): Artist, Educator and ActivistBy Dorothy G. Kapenstein◄Continued From Page Twenty

Her salary was only $57.50 a month, considerably less than what white teachers earned. Conditions in the black schools were appalling for students and teachers alike. Catlett led a demonstration of protest that led exactly nowhere. She decided to quit and look for higher education.

She found what she needed at the State University of Iowa. In 1938, she began to study for her master’s degree under the great American artist, Grant Wood who became her teacher and mentor. He achieved great fame as a painter but he also excelled in stained glass, interior design and woodcarving. Up to this time, she had thought of herself as a painter. Under Wood’s influence, she branched out into sculpture and print making. Wood urged his students to create art works about what they knew best.

Catlett took his advice very much to heart and made it the focus of her life work. She had to create a special art project to get her master’s degree. She carved a beautiful sculpture in limestone of a black mother and her child. In 1940, Catlett completed her studies and earned the first Master’s degree in art ever awarded at Iowa State University. In 1941, her “Mother and Child” sculpture won first Prize for Sculpture at the American Negro Exposition, a national show for black artists held in Chicago. While there, she met Charles White, an African American painter and maker of prints. The two young artists shared the philosophy that art should be used to bring about social and racial equality. They were married in 1941.

At this point, Elizabeth Catlett began a teaching career in higher education. She taught at Dillard University of New Orleans. She led a

protest against the very low teachers’ salaries but she lost that fight. She won two others. For the first time ever, nude models were allowed in her art classes. She talked a local museum into allowing black students to enter its doors for the first time ever to see an exhibit of works by Pablo Picasso. Later, Elizabeth taught at Hampton Institute in Virginia. Then she taught at an adult art school in Harlem, the George Washington Carver School. She also held important teaching posts in Mexico. While she was teaching, she was producing works of art that appeared in exhibits around the country. Her fame grew and she began to receive awards for her works.

In 1946, The Rosenwald Foundation awarded her a fellowship and renewed it in 1947. Catlett and her husband used it to travel to Mexico. They worked with a group of Mexican artists at the Taller de Grafica Popular (TGP), a center for artists who shared their belief that art should be part of social reform. The TGP sponsored both print and mural arts. The marriage was in trouble even before Catlett and White left home. When they returned home, they separated and then divorced. Catlett went back to TGP alone when her Rosenwald Fellowship was renewed. She created a stunning collection of prints that focused on black farmers and workers. She noted that at TGP: “I learned how you use your art for the service of people, struggling people, to whom only realism is meaningful.”

She met a young Mexican artist, Francisco Mora, who worked in murals, lithographs and paintings. He used his art to show the suffering of menial workers like miners, farmers and others. They were married in 1947. They had three sons, Francisco, a musician, Juan Mora Catlett, a college professor and film producer, and David, an artist. Juan Mora Catlett produced a film, Betty and Pancho, based on the lives of his parents.

Elizabeth Catlett and her husband got into deep trouble for their political and social activism in the late 1940’s and the 1950’s. Both the United States and Mexico were linking liberal thinkers with the Communist party and the Moras were accused. Catlett actually spent a brief time in a Mexican jail for her opinions. She became a citizen of Mexico in 1962. She explained later in an interview: “I changed my citizenship because I have been living in Mexico since 1946 and I’m a political person. I couldn’t be political in Mexico unless I was a citizen.” For some years, she was forbidden to enter the United States but the ban was later rescinded.

When she was very busy raising three little boys, Catlett was not able to give much time to sculpture. She continued to work at printmaking which allows short time projects. She returned to sculpture in the 1960’s to join other African American artists in creating portraits of great figures from their own history. She sculpted great 19th century figures like Harriet Tubman and she also created contemporary works such as Malcolm Speaks for Us and Homage to the Panthers. Jackson State University commissioned her to create a life-size bronze bust of poet Phillis Wheatley in 1973. In 1975, the City of New Orleans commissioned her to do a ten-foot high bronze statue of Louis Armstrong for the City Park. For Howard University in 1976, she produced a bronze work 24 feet high for the Chemical Engineering Building. There were so many other great works we cannot cite them all here. But her biographers and most art historians agree that her works about women and children are her most emotionally moving.

Many of her works are on exhibit in major museums such as the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Cleveland Museum, the New Orleans Museum and the National Museum of American Art in Washington, D.C. and in a number of museums in Mexico and other countries. Historically black universities collect and exhibit her works, including Hampton, Fisk, and Howard. Her works are also held by other institutions such as the Library of Congress and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.

Catlett was totally committed to exhibiting her art works in places like Churches, and community centers. She voiced this commitment in a speech she made at the National Conference on Negro Artists in 1961. “Let us take our painting and prints and sculpture, not only to Atlanta University, to the art galleries, and to patrons of the arts who have money to buy them; let us exhibit where Negro people live-in the churches, in the schools and universities, in the associations and clubs and trade unions. Then let us seek inspiration in the Negro people- a principle and never ending source.”

Catlett received many honors and awards throughout her long and distinguished career. Some were presented by prominent organizations. These included awards from the Women’s Caucus for Art, the Lifetime Achievement Award of the International Sculpture, an honorary Doctorate from Pace University and a Distinguished Alumni award from her own Howard University. There were also honors that allowed ordinary people to feel close to her. The City of Berkeley, California had an Elizabeth Catlett Week. In Cleveland, Ohio there was an Elizabeth Catlett

Day. New Orleans made her an honorary citizen. A number of city governments gave her keys to their cities. She must have loved all of them!

PHOTO ID REQUIRED FOR NOVEMBER 2012 ELECTION◄Continued From Page Nineteen

To prepare voters for the new requirement, the DOS has a special VotesPA section on its Web site with various FAQ documents that detail the various forms of acceptable ID.

For example, an employee ID issued by a government agency or state institution of higher learning is acceptable if it has an expiration date that is current. Furthermore, a sticker with an expiration date can be affixed to an otherwise acceptable employee ID as long as the sticker is issued by the employer.

Types of acceptable ID must include the person’s name, photograph and an expiration date. This includes a PA driver’ license, PennDOT photo ID cards, U.S. passport, U.S. military ID, an ID from an accredited public or private college or university, employee photo ID issued by a government entity, and an ID cards issued by a Pennsylvania care facility or assisted living residents. Note these are only acceptable if they have an expiration date printed on the ID.

Photo ID is provided by PennDOT for voting purposes if a voter doesn’t already have one. Voters must complete an application plus, to be eligible for a free photo ID, people must complete an affirmation form stating that they do not have a valid ID form and need one for voting purposes.

The new option provided by the Department of State was announced last week when DOS realized that not

all people are able to provide the documents necessary to obtain a photo ID from PennDOT. The new cards provide a safety net for those residents. They will be available at PennDOT’s Drivers License Centers beginning the last week of August.

For more information on the Department of State’s new option, people can visit the VotePA site and read Secretary of the Commonwealth Carol Aichele’s announcement from July 20.

“Leading up to the General Election, we will provide information to help residents understand this new law. We plan to conduct outreach to senior centers and through our libraries and human service agencies to ensure that people are informed and can access the necessary identification,” White said. “We don’t want anyone to forgo their right to vote because they can’t access a photo ID.”

Councilman White said senior citizens have already called the Voter Registration and Bureau of Election departments asking about the new law. Many questions are about absentee ballots. There will be new identification requirements for absentee ballots as of November.

Under the new law, voters must provide their driver’s license number, the last four digits of their Social Security number or a copy of an accepted photo ID when applying for an absentee ballot. Voters may provide the identifying information to the county over the phone, by email or mail.

“Our goal is to make this a smooth transition for voters. We are ready to help with your questions,” White said.

The voter ID laws have been facing legal challenges in various states, including Pennsylvania, so it’s important for voters to stay informed throughout the election cycle.

EARTHLY TREASURES

Knowing he would die soon, a rich man had all his assets converted into gold bars, put them in a big bag on his bed, draped his body over the bag of gold, and breathed his last. When he woke up, he was at the gate of Heaven.

Saint Peter met him at the gate and with a concerned look on his face said, “Well, I see you actually managed to get here with something from earth! But unfortunately, you can’t bring that in.”

“Oh please, sir,” said the man. “I must have it. It means everything to me.”

“Sorry, my friend,” said Saint Peter. “If you want to keep that bag, then I’m afraid you’ll have to go to, you know, the other place.

You don’t want to go there, believe me.”

“Well, I won’t part with this bag.” “Have it your way,” returned Peter. “But before you go, would you mind if I looked in the bag to see what it is that you’re willing to trade eternal life for?”

“Sure,” said the man. “You’ll see. I could never part with this.”

Saint Peter looked in the bag and with a puzzled look on his face said to the man, “You’re willing to go to hell for ... pavement?”

What’s coming between you and God? Your money? Your possessions? Your status? Your friends? Your fun? You may be sure that none of it can compare with what God has prepared for you (1 Corinthians 2:9) “What good will it be for a man If he gains the whole world, yet forfeits his soul?” (Matthew 16:26)

SAVE ME

Save me from myself, Lord;Save me from my need

To always run my life, Lord,To control my every deed.

Save me from my pride, Lord,My focus on just me;

Help me learn to serve, Lord;Show me how to be.

Save me from the world, Lord,When tempting things entice;

Remind me of eternityWith You, in paradise.

I give my life to you, LordMy every need you fill;

I’m resting in my faith, Lord; You saved me, and you always will.

POSITIVE THOUGHTS

How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives. Annie Dillard

What we must decide is how we are valuable rather than how valuable we are.

Edgar Z. Friedenberg

The truth will ouch. Arnold H. Glasow

To believe with certainty, we must begin with doubting. Stanislaus I

IN THE SMALL STUFF

• Character is made by what you stand for; reputation by what you fall for.

• Take a little more than your share of the blame.

• Be honest with yourself. Be honest with other people. Be honest with God.

• Character is one of those qualities that takes time to develop.

• Rest on God’s promises; stand behind yours.

• In every situation, ask yourself, “What Would Jesus Do?” Then do it.
