Dear Colleagues,

We would like to introduce you to our new friends: Bia and Beto (see page 4). They are two sweet little foxes, and like all siblings, they like each other very much, but sometimes they argue and compete. They are smart, but as they are still very young, there are still many things to learn.

At the age of 11 and12, teens often see themselves as grown ups. And LOVE is a big part of their lives. Our series “First loves” (see page 8) takes place in the world of Tina, Nanda, Pisco, Alex and their friends. Written in the language of teenagers, it says all about their feelings, friendships, worries, intrigues, first loves and first heartaches.

These are just two planets in the large kids’ and teens’ universe of Callis. Please take a closer look to discover more of them.

For more details, please contact us or visit our site:www.callis.com.br

CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS

VOLUME 1 – AntônioEleven-year-old Antônio has fallen madly in love for the first time in his life. Camila, the girl of his dreams, has recently moved to São Paulo and attends the class next door. She is not only beautiful, but she also enjoys literature just as much as soccer, which she’s great at. Unfortunately, Antônio is extremely shy and, to make matters worse, his best friend Alex has become infatuated with the same girl. So, Alex tells Antônio that since he “saved his friend’s life” on a stormy day at the beach, Antônio now owes him a favor. Just like Cyrano de Bergerac, Antônio agrees to write heartfelt love letters and sophisticated poems in Alex’s name, convinced that he himself would never have a chance with Camila anyway . . .

VOLUME 2 - TinaTina, an eleven-year-old from a very rich Brazilian family, is sent by her parents to a middle-class school in São Paulo to keep her in touch with the real world and provide a regular rather than privileged upbringing. Although she sometimes stands out for being a little different, she’s managed to make two best friends, Nanda and Gute. However, things change when a new girl arrives at their school: The more the handsome boys seem to be interested in Camila, the more Tina hates her. Then, Gute becomes friends with Camila, something Tina finds unforgivable. Meanwhile, Tina’s birthday is just around the corner. She plans to host a huge party with a DJ from London, and will invite everyone except for Camila. Little does she know that this will actually end up ruining her party . . .

VOLUME 3 - NandaUnlike her friends Tina and Gute, Nanda has never kissed a boy. She decides the time has come; IT will happen at Caio’s party. She plans on drawing the winner of her first kiss among the smartest boys in her school, but suddenly her plan goes out the window. Her grandfather dies, so she can no longer go to the party; however, that doesn’t mean she won’t get to kiss a boy. A few weeks later, Nanda finds out that there are two boys interested in her—the two Robertos at her school, secretly nicknamed Beto 1 and Beto 2. So IT finally happens: Beto 1 gives Nanda her first kiss, but it’s not all she thought it would be. To make matters worse, Tina keeps telling her that the two boys are not really interested, but merely playing with her feelings. In the end, Nanda will have to decide what she really wants and go for it . . .

VOLUME 4 - GuteAfter Gute’s father has been fake-kidnapped by some tricksters, the family gets some security advice from Tina’s father’s personal bodyguard. Meanwhile, Gute and her best friends, Tina and Nanda, meet Leonardo, the bodyguard’s nephew, whose charm leaves the three girls speechless. The boy is apparently most interested in Gute, so she secretly slips him her phone number, but he never calls. While her brother teases her incessantly, Gute becomes increasingly desperate and finally decides to pick up the phone and call Leonardo to find out why he never dialed her number . . .

VOLUME 5 - It’s all his/her faultGute and Pisco are twins; that pretty much sums up their relationship. Both always jump at the chance to say how stupid, pretentious, or nerdy the other one is.One evening, while their parents are out, within the first half hour, they not only begin fighting over the television, but also suddenly drop it to the ground. Then, Pisco locks his sister in the bathroom and, when it seems like they would never again make amends, they have the longest conversation of their life . . .

EXTRACTHOW THE FIRE APPEAREDA myth of the Caiapó Indians

When a young Caiapó indian was trying to catch some baby-birds in a hole high up in a thick wall, a Jaguar passed near by. He was extremely hungry and looking for food.Them he saw the boy’s shadow moving on the ground and jumped on it to catch it, but that didn’t help. He waited for the boy to move and made another futile try. He only could see the boy when he spit in her direction. He raised his head and finally discovered him.— What are you doing up there? — he asked the boy.— I’m here because my brother in law left me imprisoned.— And what is there in the hole?— There are baby-macaws — the boy answered.— Why don’t you throw some to me?He was so clever to throw only one to the jaguar, that devoured the baby macaw immediately.— Was there only one? — the feline asked.— No, there is one left.— Throw it down to me, then. So, the boy threw the second baby macaw, which was immediately devoured by the hungry jaguar. Then, he took the tree-trunk, leaned it on the wall and told the boy to come down. But the boy was afraid that the jaguar would eat him and when he was reaching the ground, he become very anxious and climbed up to the top of the wall again. The jaguar calmed him, promising that he would give him to drink. Overwhelmed by his thirst, the boy finally came down. When he reached the ground, the jaguar carried him on his back to a little creek. The boy drank so much water that he lay down on the ground and fell asleep. He slept for a long time, until the jaguar, that had observed him, awoke him. When the boy awoke, the jaguar told him that he wanted to adopt him, because he didn’t have any children. The boy, still a little suspicious, accepted. He was carried by the male jaguar on a way he didn’t know. When he arrived at the house of his new father, he saw that there was a huge trunk burning at one end.— What is that smoke, my father?— It is fire, my son.— What is fire?— You will find out when at night the cold will come and the fire will warm you. This said, the jaguar gave the boy much roasted meet. As this was new to him – his folks didn’t know the fire – he ate until he could no more. He fell asleep very well-nourished.Around midnight, he awoke and ate a little more, until he fell asleep again. When the morning rose, the jaguar went to hunt. The boy followed him for a long while, then he climbed a tree and waited for him to come back.education and for projects of economic self-sustainment, directed to the responsible organizations and creating new conflicts of identity, especially for the young indigenous.

CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS

The Flight of the blue Macaw

André, aged thirteen, is absolutely charmed by Lia, his new neighbour. The young woman recently moved into the house next door together with her husband and her uncle. To spend as much time as possible with his new friend, André even gets up for school in time and accompanies her to the bus stop. During their long conversations, the young nurse tells him that it’s her dream to study and become a barefoot doctor as there are in China. At the same time, the presence of the military dictatorship becomes more and more obvious, for example when André and his father are being controlled with their car by the military police. Then one day, André e finds out that Lia an her husband are involved into a clandestine resistance group against the military regime. To save Lia and her comrades from being caught by the military police, André takes a very high risk. When the police comes during the night to hunt the neighbours’ house, they have already gone, but the police shoot André’s parrot that has been scared up by the light and the noise in the middle of the night...The novel is told by the adult André who meanwhile has become a journalist and meets Alfredo, Lia’s husband, many years later, always remembering his feelings and thoughts as a teenager. The narration is completed by the comic strips André had drawn in his teenage days and an authentic political pamphlet that plays a crucial role in the story.By choosing a teenager’s perspective, Maria José Silveira poses paramount questions about dictatorships, making the general information accessible to young people.

Maria José Silveira, besides being an author, works as editor and anthropologist. She has a master degree in Political Sciences. Her books have won several awards such as the seal “Highly recommended” by the Brazilian IBBY Section.

A moving coming-of-age story about young love and political resistance during the military regime in Brazil, putting up some universal questions about the individual’s role in a dictatorship.

How Does It Begin?

This picture book presents an intriguing theme: How does each thing begin? And how does it end?

Written in verses with stunning illustrations, How Does It Begin invites children to think about the world through poetry in an easy yet philosophical way. It presents issues that may seem simple, but can lead to interesting contemplations. “Certain things do not always begin by being what they are: The chick begins as an egg; the frog as a tadpole; and the butterfly as a caterpillar.”
