Dear Members of the St Patrick’s Family, What a WEEK!! My congratulations to all involved with the Celebration of Excellence last Friday night. As usual the night provided the opportunity to acknowledge, to congratulate and to reflect. Once again I was extraordinarily proud to be part of the great St Patrick’s College community. I particularly wish to congratulate Philip Lambre for his award of College Dux and to Matthew Lydement (Trainee of the Year) and Daniel Reed (VET Student of the Year). Well done to each of those young men. My thanks and congratulations to all those who were involved with the night. Thank you to those who coordinated, setup, performed, helped with programs and certificates, back stage arrangements, clean up etc. All of you ensured the night was a huge success. Thank you very much. On Monday we were also witness to a very emotional and meaningful Year 12 Assembly. The College Community had the opportunity to say thank you and good luck to the Year 12 students. I am not sure which part of the assembly most impressed me—was it the large number of parents there, was it the piper, was it the other students, was it Giles, was it the school song or was it the genuine emotion shown by the Year 12 students. I am not sure but I do know that it was a privilege to witness and be a part of this special day. Whilst we are in ‘end of year’ focus it is important to note that over the next couple of weeks a number of events and activities will occur. Most notably from a student’s perspective is the approaching avalanche of assignments and exams. It is critical that the students remain focused on finishing the year well from an ‘academic perspective’. I encourage parents to maintain the focus at home over the next two weeks so that the end of year results reflect the students real potential. On a slightly lighter note I hope to see many of you at the foreshore in front of school next week for the St Patrick’s College Triathlon. It looks like being a great event at 7am with a number of individual and team entries. It should be a great morning. My inside information is that ‘TEAM CARROLL’ is a short priced favourite for the team division. Come along and see the show down. Finally this week, I wish to refer back to the Celebration of Excellence night and more particularly to the address by Mathew Makot. I was truly humbled by Mathew’s story and the determination and drive that he possesses. I know Mathew thanked St Patrick’s College for supporting him in his journey however, on behalf of all of the St Patrick’s College community thank you Mathew for allowing us to be a part of your journey. I thank you and hope and pray that you achieve your dreams. Have a great week. At last Friday’s Celebration of Excellence and again at today’s College Assembly I was involved in rec-ognising academic merit throughout 2011. The excellent turnout on Friday allowed many families an in-sight into the many prizes distributed to the boys for scholastic achievement. At the Assembly, I had the opportunity to present certificates to students who had received High Distinction in the variety of external tests conducted each year. These tests include the University of N.S.W Mathematics and Writing Tests as well as the National Chemistry Quiz. Recipients were Sean Campbell, Sean Hewson, Thomas Huth, Jacob Johannessen, Ricardo Thomas, Tom Nott, Ryan O’Dea, Christian Rizzalli, William Sked and Michael Wallace. I indicated at the Assembly, that whilst we are all excited by the prospect of holidays, there remains a significant amount of work to complete before November 25. Final assignments and exams are extremely important. Finishing the year strongly, regardless of previous performance, makes a powerful statement on the part of each student and places him in a positive state before the break. A good showing now, should carry over to next year, whereby students, encouraged by their success are able to commence 2012 in a confident frame of mind. Obviously to do this, requires a commitment from the boys. Now is the time to commence studying for these tasks. At times this will require sacrifice. Can we endure a short term inconvenience such as giving up a TV program, staying off Facebook, not going out, in order to ensure we are fully prepared for our exams? Last year I wrote about the obsessive lure of computer games such as Call of Duty (COD) and the danger this presents to students study habits. In playing such games, the boys are exposed to fast moving, excit-ing, colourful images. The temptation to keep playing is strong. But it is not just a time factor at issue here. After immersing oneself in such a world, it becomes difficult to sit down in front of a text book and focus on reading from top to bottom. Oftentimes boys will indicate that they just can’t concentrate on school work. This often does not surprise when one considers the amount of time spent on more attractive though less disciplined options. My advice is to put these distractions away for the next couple of weeks. Reward yourself in the holidays, when you can look back with a sense of pride on your achievements this year.

CELEBRATION OF EXCELLENCE Thank you to all the staff and students involved in the Celebration of Excellence held last Friday. It was a won-derful celebration of all the great things that have formed SPC in 2011. Congratulation to all award recipi-ents the hard work and dedication to all aspects of College life paid off. Well done, everyone.

YR 12 FAREWELL It was an emotional farewell to our Year 12s on Monday. Thank you to the 300 parents, grandparents and siblings who came to help celebrate the farewell of the Year 12s.

UNIFORM A reminder for all students that the uniform is to be worn correctly at all times. This includes shirts tucked in, socks pulled up, top buttons done up and ties worn correctly. This is from the moment they leave home until they return in the afternoon. All Students in Years 5 to 11 must have a school bag when travelling to and from school.

MOBILE PHONES A number of students continue to ignore the Mobile Phone Acceptable Use Policy. This causes disruption to classes and the normal operation of the school day. Detentions have been issued to these boys and I ask all families to be familiar with the policy on pages 156-157 of the Student Diary and to reinforce these guide-lines with your son. If parents can also refrain from sending text messages or ringing their sons during school time this may also alleviate this problem.

EXIT PROCEDURES FOR YEARS 10 AND 11 All students in Year 10 and 11 will be required to complete a form before they have the privilege of Block exams. The form will be required to be signed off by various staff members. Library books (by Library Staff), Lockers and Locks (by House Deans), Assessment (by Mr Campbell) and incomplete duties/detentions (by Mr Torrisi). The form has been developed to make students accountable and serves as a check that your son has completed all his duties at school.

EXAM BLOCK PRIVILEGES All students in Years 10 and 11 will commence what is known as block exams in a weeks’ time. This allows boys to stay home when they do not have an exam. This time should be used in a productive way that will as-sist them to achieve the best possible results. It is definitely not a time to get extra hours at their part time jobs. The library is available for those students who wish to study at school. Some items that need to be reinforced are: Block Exams is a privilege not a right. All normal school rules apply. Students must attend school in full school uniform, even if they are only coming to school for a short peri-

od of time. Students are not permitted to leave the school grounds for any reason during the day if they are at

school for the whole day. IPods and mobile phones are not permitted to be used on the school grounds.

END OF SEMESTER With only three weeks left in the school year for Years 5 to 11, it is extremely important that every student is very clear as to what assessment he has due. Parents can help their son by ensuring they have all the little things correctly done and are aware of their assessment requirements. The main focus for three weeks should clearly be on doing our very best.

LOST PROPERTY We have a lot of lost property in the Student Office. If your son has misplaced any items throughout the year could you please come in and check as soon as possible as all uniform items will be sent to the Uniform Shop to be resold if not claimed by the end of the year.

As they reach the end of our journey in Ryan House the class of 2011 were asked to reflect on their best moments or fondest memories of being a Ryan House Boy! ‘The lessons learnt and friends made will stay with us forever.’ ‘Ryan House gives me a sense of belonging.’ ‘Helping the Year 5’s through their first year at SPC.’ ‘Chants of RHB! RHB!’ ‘An old, grey-haired House Dean replacing the balding Brauer and the stern Sleba.’ ‘My pride for Ryan House was not instant but has grown over the years. Memories will now keep my pride alive.’ ‘House activities of eating Weet Bix in warm flat Coke with sardines – and seeing it all come back up.’ ‘House assemblies by the pool involving some form of challenge comprising of eggs, push ups and the inevitable throwing up.’ ‘Having to be ‘rescued’ every Swimming Carnival.’ ‘Ryan House has been a large part of my life at SPC, from the moment I was given a Big Brother in Year 5 to my final year where I was given the same responsibility.’ ‘Lots of friends – a second family.’ Remember where you are from ….’with unity comes success’. Ryan House Christmas Charity Drive

The Sandgate Community Centre (SANDBAG) is a not-for-profit, non-government organisation with a division dedicated to providing support to families affected by Domestic Violence. Among many other things SANDBAG offers free of charge counseling to families affected by Domestic Violence, and the Brisbane North Fax Back Program for domestic violence - or SLURP (Sand-Link United Referral Pathways). At present this program is receiving over 30 calls each month. Despite the high level of community need, the program remains unfunded and is reliant upon the voluntary support of SANDBAG. For our Ryan House Christmas charity drive this year we would like to fill a large blanket box with a range of products to be auctioned off at the 2012 Brisbane Family Law Centre Extravaganza which will raise money for SANDBAG’s Domestic Violence Unit. We are asking for students to contribute a small gift towards this drive. We would like to fill the box with a variety of goods so students can contribute any of the following: Men’s or women’s toiletries/ beauty products/pamper packs etc Homewares – kitchen/bathroom/gardening products Children’s toys Christmas food items Any other good ideas Donations can be placed in the box in Mr Phillips’ office. Thank you for supporting this very worthy cause.

MORVEN BUILDING MODEL

While Nathan Manche’s classmates ate lunch and played handball, he was up in the Art Room working on a creative architectural project: A model of the Morven building. He started the project in 2009 while he was a student at Sacred Heart School. Nathan dedicated many of his lunch times this year to complete the project. “I wanted to keep working on it to make it perfect and make it the biggest model in my entire life” he explained. A great deal of effort has been made to make the model as realistic as possible. Roof tiling, the bell tower, colour matching and even the ladies in the office smile happily through the windows. “I like building and doing art because it is very fun” Nathan said. “When I grow up I’d love to be an architect and a builder.” The project is an example of how goals can be achieved when students are patient, show initiative and put in the extra yards. As a teacher it is encouraging to see students take such pride in their work. Nathan should be commended for his efforts, enthusiasm and dedication. Well done!

As we draw closer to the end of 2011, we as a community reflect on the school year. We try to surmise the good and the bad, the failures and successes of the year that has gone past. That process has already started with the Celebration of Excellence Night and at the final Year 12 Assembly on Monday morning as our young men took their last bow at St Patrick’s College. As I was sitting in the audience listening to Mathew Makot speaking brilliantly about his journey at St Pat’s on Friday night, I could not but help to feel the nostalgia rise up in me as I realise that another cohort is making that crossing from students into the world of young adults. As a teacher this is the burden that we carry with us. We get to know these students so well, journey with them in sharing their ups and down’s, for some for many years, and then they leave. But our greatest joy, strangely, is that in this parting we rejoice with them when they take their next step into adulthood. We see them taking that brave step into the world and we applaud them.

Listening to Giles Beveridge, College captain 2011,

mentioning Dr. Seuss in his final speech on Monday morning,

made me think of sometimes how in little things we can find

the truth. I quote Dr. Seuss:

You have brains in your head.

You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.

You're on your own.

And you know what you know.

You are the guy who'll decide where to go.

These students journeyed with us – we are teachers and par-ents have equipped and prepared them for their future. They have made bonds between friends that will never be broken. They have made memories that will last a lifetime. I believe that St Pat’s has laid a good foundation for these boys, and that they will as Dr Seuss said “you can steer yourself in any direction you choose.” They need to take hold of it – live their dreams, pray every day for strength and grace and build their future. In Psalm 127 we are told that the young are like arrows in the hands of a warrior and that arrow was called the arrow of the Lord’s Victory: this is a prayer for our young men by Steve Fray.

Before us today,

Lord , are arrows of Your

Victory. These are young men you have

formed and gifted for such an hour as

this. May each one of

these men fly as an arrow of truth to a

society often muddled about

right and wrong; as an arrow of compas-sion to the unloved

and unwanted .

I pray that they would know the

‘hope of their call-ing’ and when in the course of things they are tempted to lose

heart they would know that they are indeed arrows of Your

Victory. Grant them a love for Your Word , a

heart for Prayer, a song of praise and a sensitive ear to

your Spirit. And may they never lack in passion for You. Grant them a spirit that pursues

You above all else .

Amen

On Monday 14 November at 6.30 pm in the College Board Room, entry via the main door of Morven Building and down the passage, we are holding our AGM. Each year there is ‘a changing of the guard’ as parents of Year 12 students depart and new parents ‘take up the slack’ for the coming year. All executive po-sitions are vacated and nominations, and seconded, are called for to the Secretary either before the AGM or on the evening of the meeting. This is a special invitation to all those good parents who do well in supporting your son/s in various sports of-fered by St Patrick’s to come and be part of a dynamic Group that tries to make a solid difference, and succeeds.
