    GreatNewsforourCongregation

To continue our promise for full transparency, I want to share with you some wonderful news, which benefits our congregation. I must give context to how this series of events came to fruition. Many of our longtime members fondly remember Ernie Chapman. Ernie was a paragon in ourcongregation and is still revered as a loving, generous Disciple. In fact, Ernies father, C. C. Chapmanfounded our church in 1905. Ernie passed in 2002 and named First Christian Church, Fullerton as

one of his beneficiaries. His trust passed to his wife, Edie, who left us in 2012. The Trustees and theStewardship Ministry Team were aware of this and made initial contacts to see if FCCF was stillentitled to any funds. We did not have a copy of the trust and from what we were able to discernmost of the estate was gone. Within the past several months, we accepted that FCCF would notreceive any money.

Last week, Harold Hewitt, COO of Chapman University and a Trustee of the Irwin C.Chapman Foundation and Trust contacted me. He called to inform us the Foundation was moving todissolve itself and to settle the Chapman estate and we were, indeed, a beneficiary and werescheduled to receive $190,000 from the trust. What an incredible blessing for our congregation! Now,this is where it gets a little complicated. Ernie had stipulated the church receive $6,000 per year as

long as the estate was making money. The estate wasnt settled for more than 14 years and our gifthad increased to $90,000. The Foundation also gifted us another $100,000 bringing the total to$190,000. There is no stipulation or restriction as to how the money may be used. The hope is theFoundation will be dissolved by the end of the month and all bequests will be made at that time.

Our church has been through financial hardships the past several years. The Trustees andStewardship Ministry Team are charged with ensuring the financial and spiritual health of ourchurch. We take our role very seriously. First, we want to caution that we will not rush to spend anyof the money. We will take Ernies original intent of the $6,000 gift per year into account. Eventhough the amount awarded is significantly greater, his intention was very clear and must beconsidered.

The Trustees and Stewardship are very aware of the numerous areas that would benefit from

this money. All requests will be thoroughly researched, analyzed, and discussed before any money isallocated. We will do this prayerfully and with input from all concerned parties. You have electedthe Trustees and myself as Stewardship Chair to be your financial stewards and I hope you will havefaith that we will do what is not only right for our congregation but also for Ernie Chapmans legacy.

So as we wait for our incredible gift, let us give thanks and blessings for Ernie Chapman. Weknow this money will change lives, not only within our congregation, but also in the community andfor that we are sincerely humbled and grateful.

    Blessings and Peace,Minde Findley

FromDalesDeskDear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Thank you so much for my wonderful, wonderful last few weeks atFirst Christian Church of Fullerton.

The spaghetti dinner was a treat, and I cannot thank enough all ofthose who planned the event. I offer a special word of thanks for all those

who came forward to say a good word on my behalf. Your words of encouragement will be with mealways.

My last Sunday in the pulpit was nothing less than overwhelming. Your generous monetarygift should be enough to fund 6 plane trips back to San Diego from Indiana to see my family. Andwhat happened at the end of the service was unlike anything I have ever seen or heard of. Most ofthe congregation came forward during the final hymn to reaffirm their faith in Jesus Christ. I makethat invitation each week, but it seldom elicits a response. To have so many come to declare againthat Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God was moving beyond words.

Many are wondering what comes next for me. I have accepted a call to be the Senior Ministerof Avon Christian Church in Avon, Indiana. It is good congregation and is a good fit for my gifts and

graces. I ask your prayers in my new ministry. The process is moving fast, and I expect to begin thesecond week in July. Because of her seminary and work commitments, my wife, Shelly, will not bejoining me in Indiana until August of 2017. This is why your generous monetary gift is so crucial forus. I will be flying back to see Shelly on a regular basis, and plane tickets to and from Indianapolisare expensive to say the least. Thank you so much for relieving some of that burden for us.

Let me once again express my heart-felt gratitude for your support of my ministry at FCCFboth over the last few weeks and throughout our 22 months serving together. Your constantencouragement did so much to lift me up and carry me forward in the power of the Spirit. I willremember you always.

    Blessings,

We had good support from those at thepicnic to sign letters to their representative and oursenators in congress. I will be in the Narthex after

church this Sunday for those of you who were notat the picnic.

The theme this year is Help Mothers andChildren Survive and Thrive. This year Bread forthe World is asking us to encourage our Senatorsand Congressmen/women:

    1. To authorize at least $230 million formaternal and child nutrition programs as part ofthe Global Health Account of the State Departmentforeign operations appropriations bill.

    2. Reauthorize our nations child nutrition

programs that continue to give students from low-income families access to free and reduced costschool meals as well as summer feeding programs.

SchoolSuppliesforNamibia In February, the Sr. Adult Ministrywelcomed the Rev. Loletta Barrett as theirguest speaker. She shared about her work inNamibia, one of the poorest countries in Africaas a Global Ministries missionary. Due to a lackof funding, when her initial assignment was

completed, she was not reappointed to serve inNamibia.

However, she has continued to beconcerned about the people with whom sheinteracted as a missionary, including thechildren who were being educated through theschool where she worked. She told us that theirschool year runs from Jan. 15 through Nov. 15,and that their supplies run short, if notcompletely out, in the last couple of months of

their school year. Since shes returned to theU.S. now serving the Friends Church inWhittier as their Pastor, shes continued tocollect school supplies and books to send toNamibia every other month, if possible, butespecially in August each year.

The Outreach Ministry has decided tosupport this project this year. You are invitedto bring school supplies and childrens booksto the church on Sunday, June 26. Well box upwhatever is given and see that our gifts get to

her to be mailed in August. As shipping costsare very high$130 to ship 20 pounds and 6 to8 weeks for a box to reach Namibia, if youdprefer to make a donation toward the cost ofshipping, rather than purchase school supplies, just write Namibia Shipping on the memoline of your check. Your gift, along with thoseof others, will be given to her to help coversome of the cost of shipping our gifts and/orthe gifts of others.

We are doing this project on shortnotice and with a limited time for participationbecause in the month of July well be involvedin our annual Christmas in July project aboutwhich youll be hearing more in coming weeks

    NewsfromtheRegion:

Three years ago a conversation between DOC staff and UCC staff regarding the possibility of

relocating the Regional/Conference office began. It centered around current access needs and geographic

and demographic shifts that have occurred over the last two decades that have impacted our current

    location for our ministry together.

Questions began to be raised as to where our various congregations of activity and leadership were

located and how our current facility is used effectively. From those conversations and others, we began to

explore the possibility of perhaps a better location for our Regional/Conference work. In addition, we

began to look into partnering with a local congregation, either UCC or DOC in a shared-usage

    agreement.

Our vision was to create an effective and efficient ministry center for todays needs. We are

working toward a new space for meetings and administration, but also a space for the ministries of the

region to have a familiar and comfortable place for worship, assemblies/gatherings and for all of ourprogram and community groups as well as a place to nurture new ministry.

For just over a year we visited and reviewed several possible sites for relocation. In late 2014,

conversations began with FCC Fullerton with the idea of possibly hosting the Regional/Conference office

in their facility. FCC Fullerton and Casa de Oracin, Fullerton, regarding that possibility, met us with

    much excitement and enthusiasm.

We then engaged Joe Perring as Construction/Planning Consultant and John Ahern as Architect.

We knew their work well: both had helped the Region design and remodel Campbell Lodge at Loch

Leven. We asked them to guide us in what these dreams might look like and what practicalities we

needed to consider as we share space with two congregations, one Region, one Conference and multiple

    community meetings.

Initial explorations began and the second floor of the Education facility was identified as the best

office location. The Regions commitment to accessibility, sustainability, and budget constraints have

guided the process as dreams led to structured conversations and then to early drawings of an office

remodel in those spaces being imagined

The First Christian Church, Fullerton congregation voted to make a gift to the Region of a 50%

undivided interest of the Education/Fellowship Hall building. The facility will be an enduring gift to the

ministry of the DOC/UCC. It offers many desirable attributes: ample nearby public parking, centralized

location near strategic public transportation and freeway intersections, abundant number of meeting

rooms, ground floor classrooms for children, existing Fellowship Hall and kitchen, existing ADA

bathrooms, access to a large Sanctuary.

The Region will enter into a shared-use agreement with First Christian Church, Fullerton and Casa

de Oracin, Fullerton ensuring mutual access: the Region and

Conference will have access to the large Sanctuary and the two congregations will have continued access

to the Education/Fellowship Hall facilities. The congregations of FCC Fullerton and Casa de Oracin

have voiced wholehearted, enthusiastic approval for the relocation of the Regional Church Office to their

campus with every step of the process.

Along the way, the Regional Board was kept informed with initial ideas and plans. At the

November 2015 meeting, the Regional Board approved unanimously the relocation, and in April 2016,

the Regional Board approved the receipt of the Fullerton gift and authorized Regional leadership to

    execute construction contracts.

The UCC Conference, which currently is a 50% equity owner of our current Lake Ave office will

move with us as Ministry partner but no longer as an equity partner. They will enter into a long-term

lease agreement with the Region for dedicated office space and facility usage. The Regions 50% equityfrom the eventual sale of the Lake Ave. property will be used to cover the costs of construction of the new

offices/meeting spaces at the Fullerton campus.

Our Consultant and Architect have begun their work with the city of Fullerton for plan design

approvals, permits, etc. prior to the actual construction. We anticipate construction to begin November 1,

2016, with a potential completion date by October 2017. (The item that will take the longest is the

    installation of an elevator.)

Beginning July, 2016, plans to temporarily relocate classrooms for Casa to another area in the

facility will start and they will use these new spaces during construction.

We are excited to model new forms of partnership in ministry as our Region continues it mission

and ministry of being one church.

    Together on the journey,

    Don and Susan, Co-Regional Ministers

Dear PSW Region:Since both of our Regional Ministers are out of town, I am writing on their behalf. This past

Sunday began with terrifying news of a mass shooting in a nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Moredetails continue to emerge. There were 49 murder victims and 53 who were injured by one gunmanwho was killed by the police. The tragedy of these lives cut short goes beyond our ability tocomprehend. We find ourselves filled with questions. Was this a hate crime, targeting the LGBTQcommunity? Was this a terrorist action? Perhaps in time we will know more. What we know for

certain is that there are many more whose lives have been painfully altered by the deaths and injuriesof these beloved children of God. I trust that you are joining in prayer for all of these.I would encourage you to go beyond prayer. We need to evaluate our own words and deeds,

eliminating hatred and violence and replacing them with justice and love. We must speak out onbehalf of those who live their lives in uncertainty and danger. We must stand together as onepeople. I would also encourage you to click the link below to the response of the Rev. Dr. SharonWatkins, our General Minister and President.May the Peace of Christ fill your hearts,

    Rev. Pamela J. Moore

Regional ModeratorPastor at First Christian Churchof San Bernardino

TextofSharonWatkinsVideo(goto www.disciples.orgtowatchthevideo)Our hearts are broken once again this time by the hateful violence at Pulse Nightclub in Orlando:

to those who lost loved ones may you be surrounded with love in your grief and loss;to the injured and your families, may you know healing and hope;to the brave first responders and caregivers as you face the memories of what you witnessed,

may you find peace of mind;to LGBTQ neighbors beloved of God to families, allies and friends may you find courage

and hope in the knowledge of our love.To Muslim neighbors and friends we know that such violence does not represent who you

are any more than the actions of extremist Christians represent who we are. We stand together.Sadly, today we also remember the first anniversary of the mass shooting at the Emanuel AMEChurch in Charleston. We continue to mourn with families and communities still grieving over thatawful day.We think about the many too many mass shootings of this past decade alone Virginia Tech, Ft.Hood, Aurora, Sandy Hook, San Bernadino, Charleston and now Orlando. In this confluence of many

social and international currents, the search for policies and processes to help prevent these acts willbe complex. But it must begin with a rejection of hate and violence.Through it all, this is the time to reach out to each other as secular communities and communities offaith as one human family knit together by God who loves us. Let us take action, in ways small andlarge, to show that love is stronger than hate. Love wins.

Where encounters with God are not only ordinary,

    theyre extraordinary!

Where invitations not only happen on occasion,
