TM From the Collar

Today’s gospel reminds us that we encounter Jesus at our own risk: we will be confronted with the truth of our own sinfulness, with the tragedy of our own sinful living. But encounter with Jesus also brings hope: in the confrontation and invitation to repent Jesus offers the joy of new Life. We begin the last third of the Lenten season. Even if we have not been all that faithful to our chosen Lenten practices, it is not too late now to resolve to open ourselves to encounters with Jesus so that we can approach Easter with a renewed spirit seeking new Life. Like the crowd in the gospel, it is often easier for us to focus on the sins of others than on our own weaknesses. Also like the crowd in the gospel, we can encounter Jesus and face the truth of ourselves. Lent is a time to encounter Jesus, turn from our sinfulness in repentance, and seek divine mercy. The remarkable good news of this gospel is that by facing and repenting of our own sinfulness we establish new relations with those around us. Acknowledgment of our own sins and how we have hurt others builds us into stronger members of Christ’s Body.

* * * * * * * * * * Additional opportunities for the Sacrament of Penance before Easter: Wednesday, March 16, 9:00 – 10:30 AM and Friday, March 18, 9:00 – 10:30 AM in Church.

REJOICE AND BE GLAD

STRAIGHT LINES “God writes straight with crooked lines,” the saying goes. The power of Paul’s testimony that everything is junk but knowledge of Jesus and the power of his resurrection is a straight enough message. And, God knows, Paul had a crooked journey before his blinding insight straight from God. Through Isaiah, God reminds us all that the past great works were as nothing compared to the new creation. “Can’t you see it?” we are asked, as if we are still wandering along our crooked lines. And there is no straighter line than that between the woman whose misery is intense and the God whose mercy in Jesus is deeper and more acute. You just can’t beat this kind of good news.

Preparation for Divine Mercy Sunday

Our Lord's words to St. Faustina are very strong and leave no room for misinterpretation: "The first Sunday after Easter is the Feast of Mercy, but there must also be acts of mercy.... I demand from you deeds of mercy, which are to arise out of love for Me. You must not shrink from this or try to excuse or absolve yourself from it." To fittingly observe the Feast of Mercy and receive the promised graces and mercy, we should follow these seven guidelines:

1) Celebrate the Feast on the Sunday after Easter; 2) Sincerely repent of all our sins; 3) Place our complete trust in Jesus; 4) Go to Confession, preferably before that Sunday; 5) Receive Holy Communion on the day of the Feast; 6) Venerate the Image of The Divine Mercy; 7) Be merciful to others through our Actions, Words, and Prayers on their behalf.

Now is the time to begin preparing. Come venerate the Image of the Divine Mercy with us every Wednesday morning after 8:00 Mass and recite the Chaplet. On Good Friday, we begin the 9-day Novena to the Divine Mercy which leads us to the Divine Mercy Sunday devotion. Look for more information in our bulletin in the coming weeks. "Keep Vigil".

St. Martin de Porres Church Knights of Columbus are organizing a “40 Cans for Lent” food drive. All Parishioners are invited to participate by donating the equivalent of one can of food per day, during Lent - Ash Wednesday, February 10th through Palm Sunday, March 20th. Participants are encouraged to place a can of food in a box at home while praying daily for the poor and hungry. The Lenten Food Drive will benefit Catholic Charities, Manna Ministries and Abraham’s Tent. You are asked to consider praying for the poor using the prayer below. On Palm Sunday your offering of 40 cans of food should be delivered to the church, at all Masses, to be received by brother Knights. Look for the ACTS trailer at the drop-off point at the end of the driveway entrance. The Supreme Office of the Knights of Columbus will donate $100 for every 1,000 pounds of food collected and for every $500 donated. These funds will be forwarded to same food drive beneficiaries: Catholic Charities, Manna Ministries and Abraham’s Tent. If preferred, your donation can be delivered to the parish office during the week before Palm Sunday, March 14 - 18, during regular office hours 8:30a - 4:30p M-F.
