Ancient Shan Inancienttimes,ShanruledtheEastinwhatisnowShanandTherwyndia.DuringtheGoldenAgeofShan,therealmwaspresidedoverbyfivesacredmountains.IntheNorthwasShanxiShan,orPermanentMountain,intheFireMountains.IntheWestwasHuaShan,orSplendidMountain,thatoverlookedtheAzureSeaandwastherealmoftheWaterMasters.HangShan,theBalancedMountain, lay IntheSouthandwaswheretheJadeLordoftheEarthMastersresided. InthecenteroftherealmwasSongShan,theLoftyMountain,intheMhuzheerMountains.ItwashomeofthemysteriousSeaofCloudsandtheShaolinMonkswhosoughttomastertheirAirChiandwalkupontheclouds.Finally,wastheEastmountainwheretheGreatEmperorruledallofShan–TaiShan,theTranquilMountain.WithineachofthegreatmountainslivedadragonthatguardedadivineorbcalledThePearloftheDragon.Nooneknewwherethedragonshadcomefromnorwhytheyguardedthewondrouspearls,buttheirmagicwasstrong.Itwasbelievedthatitwasthepearlthatcreatedthechiforeachoftheelements.AtimecamewhenplotsandintriguescausedtheinfestationoftheGreatEmperor’sCourt.OvermanyyearsthesemachinationsplayedoutinfavoroftheErtoukclan,greatVoidWalkerswhoassumed the throne and converted the majestic and serene mountain into an impregnablefortresscalledOsklabnidia.TheothermountainkingdomsrejectedtheusurpersandabittercivilwardescendedonShanthatsplitthecountryintotwolands–ShanintheNorthandTherwyndiaintheSouth.

The Fall of the Ertouk Empire FarintheeasternlandsofPanjialiethetwomightykingdomsofShanandTherwyndia.Manycenturiesago,Shanruledall fiveoftheeasternmountain lands,butthenTherwyndiarose inpowerandthemountainkingdomsweresplit.ThelastfamilytoruleovertheXukongXiangzhe(VoidWalkers)ofTherwyndiawerethemightyErtoukDynasty.ThelastoftheirlinewasEmperorLiungesh,afierceandtyrannicalruler.NowthelandsofTherwyndiaareinastateofturmoil.ThesecondhighestofficebeneaththeEmperorwastheHighPriestofHyshuandhisnamewasJehnu-Hyshu.HehadmadetheunfortunatemistakeoffallingmadlyinlovewiththeEmperor’ssister,Chunjesh.ShewasalsosmittenwiththeHighPriestandthetwoofthembecamelovers.WhenEmperorLiungeshfoundoutabouttheirtryst,hewasfurious.HeforbadethescandalousaffairandpromptlyhadJehnu-HyshuimprisonedinthedepthsofOsklabnidia’sdungeonstobetorturedbythehighlyskilledtorturemasters.AsforChunjesh,shewasdruggedbyLiungeshandplacedinanornatebedguardedbyseveralelitesoldierswhilehestewedoverherfate.Jehnu-Hyshu,however,hadmany,loyalfollowersandtheymanagedtobribecertainspieswithinthefortresstoreleaseJehnu-Hyshu.HefledfromtheEastintohiding.Jehnu-Hyshudidnotfleewilly-nilly into theWest, however; he knew immediatelywherehewasheading – tohire anassassinfromthemostnotoriousoftheirclans,theMaestroKwellin(MasterKillers).Not only did this assassin infiltrate the formidable fortress of Osklabnidia and kill EmperorLiungesh,hesavedChunjeshfrombeinghurledfromtheloftybalconyofherbedchamber.Thetwoescapedonthestrangeflyingrats,calledMalvrats,thattheroyalguarduseasaerialsteeds.Jehnu-HyshuthenreturnedtoTaiShantoreignasintermediaryruleruntiltheEmperor’syoungsoncouldbecoronated.Thisneveroccurredbecause Jehnu-HyshuandChunjeshslaughteredLiungesh’swifeandchildrenandproclaimedthemselvesthenewrulersoftheErtoukDynasty.Theirreignwasshort-lived,however.ArevoltoccurredandChunjeshwasslaughtered.Jehnu-Hyshudescendedintomadnessathislostbelovedandbeganacampaignofexecutionsagainstanyoneheremotelysuspectedofnotbeingloyaltohim.Hehadmadeonecriticalmistake,though;heneverpaidtheMaestroKwellintheirpaymentforservicesrendered.So,thesameassassinreturnedtoOsklabnidiaandkilledJehnu-Hyshu.Bythistime,thewholeregionofTherwyndiahaddescendedintochaosandcivilwar.

Shan Sets their Sights on Therwyndia WhilethingsweredeterioratinginTherwyndia,EmperorZi-KhafwaswatchingvigilantlyfromhisseatofpowerinShanxiShan.Notwantingtoleavethepowerstruggledownsouthanisolatedfight,hedecidedthatitjustmightbetimetousherinanewShanEmpiretorivaltheancients.AlreadyhehasbroughtthebellowsintheFireMountainsuptofullproduction.Theblacksmithsarerumoredtobeproducingweaponsandarmorlikenever.ButthereisafarmoresinisterrumorthathauntstheEast.SomesaythatZi-Khafhasdiscoveredhow to tame the great fire dragon Zhulong. They also say that the Fire Dragon’s Pearl hasawakened.JustwheredoesZi-Khafacquirealltheresourcestocreatehisarmy,anyway?

The State of Affairs in each Area.

The Fire Mountains In Shanxi Shan, Zi-Khaf has reason to believe he is an unstoppable force that will reclaimTherwyndiaforthegloryofShan.HehasindeeddiscoveredthespellsthatcharmedoldZhulong.ThegreatRedDragonrevealedthesecretsofnotjusttheFirePearl,butallofthepearls;andthatisthatallofthefivepearlsareMoshuMenhu(portals)tootherworlds.Zi-Khafsentanexpeditionthere.TheyreturnedtoreportthattheportalledtoarealmcalledtheDreamlands.AsecondexpeditionenteredacitycalledDylath-Leenandatradeagreementwasnegotiated.ItwasfromDylath-LeenthatShanxiShanhasbeensecuringitsrawmaterials.Onthedomesticsideoftheportal,Zi-Khafhasdecidedthathewillunlockalloftheotherportalsaswell.Andwhatbetterplacetostartthanyourownpuppetgovernment?

The Azure Sea ForhundredsofyearsthecourtatHuaShanhasbeenruledoverbyatokenrulerwithvirtuallynoauthority.TheoncegreatlandisanextensionofZi-Khaf’srulenow.TheGuowang(King)whopresidesovertheAzureCourtisWanzhi.Heisareclusivemanwhoonlyshowsaprimandpropermasktotheworld.HeisverypreciseandfairinhisbusinessfortheHuangdi(Emperor)intheNorth.

Currently,therehasbeenahugecontingentoftheEmperor’scourtandarmyenterthearea.Zi-KhafhasarrivedhimselftooverseethetamingoftheAzureDragon.Thingshaven’tbeengoingsosmoothlyfortheEmperor’sgreatestFireWu(FireWizard)Vishog-Li.Apparently,thespellsthatplacedZhulonginatrancedon’tworkonthegreatAzureDragonQilong.ButVishog-Liknowsit’sjustamatteroftimebeforeheunlockstherightspells.OneofthetransformationsthattookplacewhenthefirstgreatKhafconqueredHuaShanwasthe abolishment of cultivating Water Chi. All the great masters were executed in bloodyslaughters.Someclaimthattherearestillmasterswhoescapedintoexile,butwheretheymightbenowisamystery...ormaybeevenjustalegend.

The Mhuzheer Mountains Meanwhile,veryfewpeoplecomeorgofromtherealmshighupintheMhuzheerMountainsand Song Shan. Long has Song Shan maintained an isolationist and neutral interest in thehappeningsbelowtheirworld.ThereusedtobeatimewhenallthemonksofShaolinTempletraveledalloverthelandfightingthe injusticesof theworldanddefendingtheweakandpoor.Theirexploitshavepassed intolegendasbeinggreatheroeswithgreatpowers;butnowmostbelievethereareveryfewstillalive.MostpeoplealsobelievetheirgreatpowershavewanedtothepointwheretheyaremostlyjustlazymonksmeditatingtheirdaysawayintheremotesnowsofSongShan.Inreality,themonkshavebeenquitediligentintheirKungFutraining.Inaddition,theexiledWaterMastersdidindeedjourneytotheupperregionsoftheMhuzheerMountains.SomedaysanenlightenedmonkmaybeseentreadingtheswellsoftheSeaofCloudsbesideamightyJing,oneofthebeautifulskywhalesthatswimamongsttheclouds.ThemastersandQinggongwhorulethisrealmdonotworryaboutprotectingthe locationofFeilong, the Air Dragon, because none of them know where Feilong’s lair is hidden in theobscurityoftheSeaofClouds.Butoccasionally,someonewillglimpsethemightydragonsoaringinandoutofthemountaincragsandthroughtheclouds.Willthemonkseverbandtogetherandreturntotherealmsbelow?Willtheyatleastsendheroeswho will once again fight for justice? No one can say, but as of now, Song Shan remainsunconcernedwiththetroublesbrewinginShanandTherwyndia.

The Jade Mountain JustasHuaShanisapuppetofShanxiShan,so,too,isHangShanapuppetofTaiShan.OnemightthinkthatnowwouldbeanidealtimeforthekingtheretotakethethroneoftheEmperor,butFhan-Loisonlyaneight-yearoldboy.Currentlyhismother,QueenShaandthecourtvizierareatoddsoverwhohasauthorityovertheboy’sregency.Whiletheirpowerstruggleplaysout,theboyisnomorethanarudelittlerichboywhowhinesovertrivialthings.TheJadeMountaingetsitsnamefromthefactthattheminesinthisregionaretheworld’sonlysourceofjadeanditisaveryvaluablecommodity.Onlyaclandestinesectoffivemushi(priests)knows the twisting and turning route that descends deepwithin themountain to the lair ofDilong;buttheyonlycheckontheoldEarthDragononceeveryfewyearsbecausethemountainsarehometotheKaraBarakaswell.Araceakintognollsbutaremarkedlydifferentbytheirblack,thickcoatsoffur.Theyarefiercefighterswhocommandtrollstohelpthemfight.EvenwhenthemushidogocheckonDilong,hehasbeenfoundsleepingawayhisdaysformanygenerations.

Osklabnidia ThechaosthateruptedinTaiShanledtoadecimationofthepopulation.Pillaging,fighting,andmaraudingarerampantthroughouttheregion.Theonlyareawhereanysemblanceoflawandorder prevails is in the coastal town north of Osklabnidia called Zik. The garrison there iscaptainedbyagreatwarriornamedShupa.HedescendsfromagreatlineofinvaderswhooncecampaigneddeepintothelandofShanfromtheSteppesofYevar.Shupa’smenatthisoutpostareextremelyloyaltohimandhavebandedtogethertoformacrackunitthatwantstogotakethecapitalbackandrestoreordertothesituation.Meanwhile,theFortressofOsklabnidiaiscurrentlyheldbythesectofwarlocksknownastheXukongXiangzhe.TheyhavecontroloftheeliteguardwhopatrolthemountainswiththeirflyingMalvrats. TheVoidWizardsalsohave controlof theQuanchGiantsandRespichSpiders thatprotectallentrancestothearea.OftheXukongXiangzhe,threeresideatthehierarchy’stopasthesectshighestWu.Ofthesemen,one,Ji-Laothak,isanallyofKarzhi,thevizierwhoistryingtocontrolKingFhan-LobackintheJadeMountain.

The Black Panther’s Guild is a rigorous training program that produces many great shadowwarriors. They are trained in stealth and sneak attacks and are infamous Cike. Itmay seemstrangethattheassassinthatkilledEmperorLiungeshandHighPriestJehnu-Hyshudidn’tcomefromthisguild,buttheguildwasthoroughlyundertheinfluenceofbothmenatthetime.ItwasJehnu-HyshuwhohadtogoabroadandrecruitanassassinfromtheMaestroKwellin.TheBlackPantherswerecreatedbytheVoidWalkersandawarriorfromthisclanmayonlychoosetheElementalFocusofVoid.Theyrarelyweararmorasitjeopardizesstealth.

Song Shan (Central)

HighintheMhuzheerMountainsontheshoresoftheSeaofCloudsiswheretheShaolinTempletrainsthestyleoftheMhuzheerHawk.ThisbirdissimilartotheSecretaryBirdwithalargecrestandlonglegswithlargetalons.TheKungFustylemimicsthebirdwithitsuseofunorthodox,double-handed,rakingstrikes.Shaolinmonksareexpertsondisarmingtheirfoes.TheyalsousetheElementalFocusofAir.Shaolinmonksrarelyweararmor,butthosethatdochoosetowearfeatheradornedarmorwithahelmetthatiscrested.

The Bone Chewers DeepunderthemountainsintheDilaolivetheKaraBarak.ItissaidthattheDilaoextendsviaavastundergroundnetworkunderallthemountainofShanandTherwyndia.Mostly,however,theKaraBarakareconcentratedundertheJadeMountains.Itisbelievedthateitherthenetworksoftunnelsdon’tactuallyconnecttoalltheothermountains,orthattheKaraBarakdiscoveredsomethingsoterrifyingthateventheyleaveitalone.Whateverthecase,veryfewpeopleventuretoofarthroughtheDilao.The Kara Barak are known by humans as the Bone Chewers because of their reputation forscavenging.TheBoneChewerscarenothingforhumanclansandpoliticsandattackanygroupofhumanswithoutdiscrimination.

The Da Ka Militia LedbytheGongjiangprodigyAsha-Tana,theDaKaMilitia isasecretivefightinggroupthat iscurrentlypreparingforanewemperortorisetopowerinTaiShan.ShouldthisnewemperorsettheirmindtosubjugatingDaKaanyfurtherthanthecityhasalreadybeensubjugated,theyarepreparedtounleashtheirarsenalofinfernaldevicesuponTaiShan.Fornow,theyaretraining,building,andbidingtheir time.Theyaremore likelytodefendDaKathansetoff towar,butmaybetheycanbepersuadedtojointhecause.
