Selection procedure Application procedure and documents required

All Candidates must include in their application the following documentation in addition to that already described in the general part of the present Call: 1. a summary (in English) using the form available online in the UniBS website (file: Summary.doc). The file has to be filled in, signed, dated, scanned into a pdf document, and renamed as “Lastname_DRIMI_ApplicationForm&Summary.pdf”; 2. the title and a summary in English of their Master thesis, and any other documents deemed useful by the candidate for his/her scientific evaluation (all such documents must be scanned and collected in a single PDF file named “Lastname_DRIMI_OtherDocuments.pdf”); 3. A brief Statement of their Scientific Interests and Motivation (max 2500 characters, including spaces) to be elaborated in the light of the Research Areas and Research Topics of the PhD Program listed in the webpages http://en.unibs.it/education/phd-programmes/engineering/mechanical-and-industrial-engineering. The objective of the Statement must be to describe the motivations for the application to the doctoral program;

Outline in which scientific area he/she aims at developing his/her research; it is possible to provide a second area of interest, but in that case a priority has to be clearly stated.

The statement of motivation and research interests must be written in English (or in Italian, with at least the general motivation in English).

The Candidate must use the form “DRIMI_StatementOfMotivation&ResearchInterests.doc” (available online in the UniBS website); the form has to be filled in, signed, dated, scanned in pdf and named “Lastname_DRIMI_StatementOfMotivation&ResearchInterests.pdf” 4. A Research Project Proposal with the following features:

The topic has to meet one of the research area developed within the doctoral program;

The proposal must be written in English or in Italian (in this case the abstract must be in English);

The proposal cannot exceed 15000 characters (including spaces); It must include: title, research area, abstract, research goal,

literature review, expected results, methodology, references; The proposal must be written following the template available on

the university website (file: DRIMI_ResearchProjectProposal.doc); such template must be filled in, signed, dated, scanned in pdf and renamed “Lastname_DRIMI_ResearchProjectProposal.pdf” 5. Candidates who opt for being interviewed via Skype rather than by an in situ oral interview, must request so by filing also the request form "on-line oral entrance examination" (according to art. 6, paragraph 2 of the Call), available on the University website. The Candidate has to ask at least one reference person (maximum three) to fill in and sign the form provided on the University website (file named: DRIMI_LetterOfRecommendation.doc). The file has to be sent directly from the reference person by email – subject: Letter of Recommendation DRIMI – LAST NAME CANDIDATE – LAST NAME REFERENCE – to [email protected]. It should also be noted that in case of admission, the project topic chosen won’t necessarily be the one to be developed during the Ph.D program.

Evaluation criteria for ordinary and for reserved positions alike

The Evaluation Committee will proceed by first evaluating only items 1, 2 and 3 as specified above. The Evaluation Committee will not evaluate the Candidates whose curriculum is judged as "not in line with the scientific interests of the doctoral program", these will be excluded from the evaluation. Also candidates who should not have submitted the Research Project Proposal will be excluded from further examination. The maximum score for the evaluation of the documents submitted as items 1, 2 and 3 is 36 points, which the Evaluation Committee will assign on a comparative basis taking into consideration the following elements:

- Final mark obtained in the MSc program (or average mark for those who have not yet completed their dgree, only in case the Call allows them to participate);

- MSc thesis project (for undergraduates admitted conditionally, in the absence of the thesis, a draft of it signed by the supervisor), and subsequent scientific activities related to the scientific interests of the doctoral program;

- Awards, honours, and other qualifications; - International activities (such as, for example, stages, thesis

abroad, participation in the ERASMUS program, etc.).

Page 18: Call for PhD Applications XXXII cycle complete of Annex A

Candidates who scored less than 20 points in the evaluation of their “qualifications” will be excluded from further evaluation. Next the Evaluation Committee will proceed with the examination of the Statements of Motivation and the Research Project Proposals. The maximum score for the evaluation of the Statement and Project is 32 points. Candidates who scored less than 20 points in the evaluation of their “Project” will be excluded from further evaluation. The Committee will then interview – oral exam - (either in Italian or English as requested by the Candidate) the remaining Candidates; the interview will touch upon topics of interest for the Doctoral Course. The maximum score to be granted in the oral examination is 32. After having determined the final ranking of those candidates that are considered suitable for a PhD position within the doctoral course DRIMI, the Committee will evaluate if these candidates meet the requirements necessary for those fellowships that are linked to a specific research topic. The Committee will do so by taking into account the scientific interests of the Candidates (as stated in their application forms). In addition, the Committee may ask the scientific reference person of the specific research topic to act as independent referee on this issue. The referee reports will be attached to the final report of the Evaluation Committee. If no Candidates turn out to be deemed suitable for a specific topic for a post with scholarship, the corresponding position with scholarship is not awarded.

Oral Interview The oral interviews will start at 10.00, Italian Time, on September 15, 2016: oral interviews will take place in Aula Riunoni at the DIMI.

For candidates who opted for being interviewed via Skype: the Committee will call them between 10:00 and 12:00, Italian time. If they do not answer, they will be called again at 14:00, Italian Time and, if absent again at the second call they will be called once more at the end of all oral interviews. If absent also at the third call, the candidate will be considered as absent and therefore fail the exam.
