U.S.-INDIA SUMMITOn May 31, 2006 the California Institute for Telecommunications andInformation Technology (Calit2) will host, on behalf of the University ofCalifornia, a U.S.-India Summit on Education, Research & Technology inSan Diego. The invitation-only meeting brings together 150 distinguishedparticipants from industry, academia, government and non-governmentalorganizations in the U.S. and India to identify new areas of collaborationbetween the two countries in high-tech education and research.

The U.S.-India Summit arose from a series of agreements involving institu-tions from both countries. In 2005 twenty American universities signed amemorandum of understanding to collaborate on distance engineeringeducation with Amrita University and other Indian institutions, includingIndia’s Department of Science and Technology, and Indian Space ResearchOrganization. Organized by Amrita Vice Chancellor Venkat Rangan, theuniversity effort received private support from QUALCOMM Inc.,Microsoft Corp., and Cadence Design Systems, Inc.The University ofCalifornia signed a subsequent agreement in March 2006 to promoteresearch collaborations with Amrita and other Indian universities, andIndian science and technology agencies. The Indo-U.S. Science andTechnology Forum will play an essential role in promoting and facilitatingthe collaborative research activities arising from the UC-India agreement.
