The Cadet Training Group was founded in the summer of 1975 at Vandenberg Air Force BIn the 38 years since, the CTG has welcomed and graduated more than 10,000 cadets As CTG graduates have excelled in their CAP careers, they have become even more sucaspects of their life. CTGalumni have gone on to become successful leaders both in thecivil sector as well as in the armed forces of the United States. Former Cadets arenow serving in Afghanistan and other theaters of opera ons throughout the world.Graduates, we welcome you into the dis nguished ranks of the Cadet Training Group.

However, a change in personnel requirements resulted in the ac va -

on of only one CTS instead of the three that were planned. Shortly a er the FortOrd Encampment, Cadet Doyle commanded Delta Flight, 17th CTS at McClellan AF

At 17 he earned his FAA private pilot cer cate and won an appointment to the U.S. AirForce Academy, where he graduated in the top 5% of his class. A er comple ng training as a F-16

ghter pilot, he was sta oned in Germany (NATO) with the 10 TFS Figh ng Tenth(USAFE).

one grim cloudy day in the spring of 1988, 1st Lieutenant Tom E. Popeye Doyle s F-16 ghterexperienced catastrophic engine failure while over the center of the city of Forst. Althoughhe could have bailed out, Lt. Doyle elected to stay with his crippled ghter to guide it awayfrom the shops, schools and conges on below. He succeeded, but died in the ensuing crash.

In 1989, the Cadet Training Group recognized Lt. Doyle by naming posthumously, as thecommander of the 49th Cadet Training Squadron. The guidon of the 49th Cadet Training Squadronappears on the Cadet Training Group shield as a reminder of our CTG hero.

ing Group history. No cadets were ever assignedto the 49th CTS; the number was set aside tohonor a former member of the Cadet TrainingGroup. Cadet Captain Tom Doyle was a North-

ern California youth who was a leader in hisschool and community, a licensed pilot at age17 and an outstanding member of the Civil AirPatrol. Cadet Doyle was selected to commandthe 18th CTS at Fort Ord in the summer of 1980.

Congratula ons on comple ng your basic encampment. More importantly, congratula ons tocommi ng yourself to a di cult task and nishing what you started. By doing so you have re nedyour character and become more vivid versions of yourself. You step forward into the ranks ofservants, and supporter. Not kings or rulers, but leaders and learners. Not to glorify what you haveaccomplished as an individual. Your posi on within the group is temporary and circumstan al,but your willingness to serve toward a goal greater than yourself is meless.

Most of your peers will look back at this summer as a season of fun and friends. You will be ableto look back to this season as the beginning of doing hard things, of challenging your limita ons,

and of never se ling for your rst a empt. You also have the fun and the friends, but you have somuch more in addi on. Teamwork, a en on to detail, and pushing yourself past your perceivedpersonal limits will always result in a be er outcome. You have now taken your rst steps into TheCadet Training Group, and I say from personal experience that it is a journey of a life me. No mat -ter where you go in life, you will always carry The Cadet Training Group, your band of brothers, inyour heart. Con nue to seek excellence in all that you do.
