Biennial SCCAVS Field Trip to Mount Wilson Observatory Announced for August 22nd, 2015

In the first half of the 20th Century, eminent astronomers such as Harlow Shapley

and Edwin Hubble used the incomparable facilities of Mount Wilson Observatory

to forever alter humankind's view of our place in a vast and expanding Universe.

Today, Mount Wilson's original solar and night-time telescopes, the world's largest

for two generations of astronomers, have been joined by new facilities achieving

unprecedented high-resolution views of the stars.

Located on the summit of Mount Wilson above Pasadena at an altitude of 5715

feet, the Observatory is visible from much of the Los Angeles area. Mount Wilson

is home to both 60-inch and 100-inch telescopes. The 60-inch telescope provides

incredible views of some of the most beautiful objects in the night sky and is among

the largest in the world accessible to public viewing The 100-inch Hooker Tele-

scope, the world's largest from 1917 to 1949, forever altered our understanding of

the nature and size of the Universe and launched a revolution in astronomy that

continues through today. These world-heritage class instruments were used by

many of the greatest astronomers of the Twentieth Century. Imagine looking

through the telescope used by Edwin Hubble in the 1920s to measure the expan-

sion of the Universe...

Elmer Carvey Scholarship 2015 Call for Applications

The Southern California Chapter of the AVS Science and Technology Society (SCCAVS) currently administers a scholarship program for

undergraduate students planning a career in the physical sciences. It is the 2015 Elmer Carvey Memorial Scholarship -- established in

honor of Elmer Carvey, an active member of the SCCAVS from 1964 until 1982.

This Scholarship is valid for undergraduate studies at any public four-year college in California, i.e. California State University or University

of California. The stipend is $1,500 and may be used for tuition. The award is for one year, but may be renewed. Applications are

accepted from students in physics, chemistry, materials science and engineering. Applicants should be planning research in areas of

interest to the SCCAVS, including surface and thin film science, nanotechnology, the understanding of materials properties, and the

development of new materials and devices. (Biological sciences are generally not covered by this Scholarship unless the student's study

area is interdisciplinary and involves areas of interest to the SCCAVS.) Up to TWO awards will be presented.

The application materials should be sent to the mailing address below. They must be received by June 1, 2015, for the

2015-2016 academic year. Scholarship recipients will be notified by August 1, 2015. The links below give information concerning the

scholarship and our society, as well as the application form. If I you have any questions, please contact [email protected].
