The Dental Support Center Receives Grant from the

California Wellness Foundation to Improve Oral Health Services for AIAN Adults and Seniors

An award of $125,000 per year, for three years will be for a project to promote Periodontal Disease Prevention and

to provide partial dentures to AIAN adults and seniors. Partial dentures are a service that is not covered by Medi-Cal

and the DSC is excited to be able to partner with four tribal programs to provide this much needed service.

Our partners for this project are:

Greenville Rancheria Dental Clinic Promotes Oral Health

at the Stillwater Powwow

On October 2nd& 3rd, 2015 Sheryl Weston, RDA and Jill Coultas, RDH

from the Greenville Rancheria clinic, set up a dental booth at the Pow-

wow held at the Shasta District Fair Grounds in Anderson, CA.

We provided information, answered dental questions and handed out

toothbrush kits, pamphlets, etc. An estimated 300 toothbrush kits

were dispensed. Twenty-one dental screenings were done, mostly on

children. We focused screenings on people with a dental concern, or

children that had yet to visit a dentist. Of the Twenty-one screened, 10

had active caries. Fluoride varnish was applied on all but one. A large percentage of people we talked with were

edentulous. Perhaps next year we can provide denture care products. Tobacco use prevention information was

handed out and the chewing tobacco cessation bags kits were quite a hit.

The Mobile Dental Units Provided by The Dental Support Center

Assists Tribal Programs to Serve Their Communities

Access to dental services has always been a challenge to the remote community of Manchester Point Arena Reservation.

On September 23rd and 24th 2015, Dental Director Joel Berryhill DDS and Melissa Bailey

RDA from SCHIP set up a mobile dental clinic in the tribal Head Start school. For the very first time the children from this rural reservation had the opportunity to access preven-tive dental services, without traveling long distances. Fifteen children received services which included exams, prophys, fluoride applications and education.

Maleese Warner, a teacher from Head Start said "The Manchester Point Arena Tribal Head Start is in a remote part of California and the closet SCIHP dental clinic is a two hour drive. The families where overjoyed to have this opportunity to have dental check-ups at the local Rancheria. We are all grateful that SCIHP came to help the families and hope to see them every year!"

TELEDENTISTRY Opens a new path for Access!

Assembly Bill 1174 was approved by the Governor which provides another

pathway to increase access to underserved populations.

Teledentistry by Store and Forward enables Medi-Cal providers to practice

teledentistry, as defined as the transmission of medical information to be

reviewed at a later time by a licensed dental provider at a distant site.

(Allied dental professionals, such as RDHAP, are not permitted to bill for

services provided via teledentistry).

Providers may bill for store and forward transmission on or after July 1,

2015. Please refer to the Denti-Cal Bulletin for further details.
