Last Time Out Rain pushed Cal’s season opener against Cal Poly back a day but, after the Bears dropped the first game of a Saturday doubleheader, they rebounded to earn a 4-3 win in the nightcap and an 8-1 win on Sunday morning to take the series. Cal’s bullpen was particularly impressive throughout the weekend, allowing just one run in 11 1/3 innings of work, and the offense produced 35 hits over three games. After setting inclement weather aside to start the season with a pair of wins over a strong Cal Poly squad, the Cal baseball team hits the road for another test as the Bears head to Lubbock, Texas to square off with No. 11-ranked Texas Tech. The four-game series begins Friday afternoon, continues with a doubleheader on Saturday and wraps up with a Sunday matinee.

Cal got off to a good start with a series victory over the Mustangs, winning the second game of a Sat-urday doubleheader 4-3 and closing the weekend with an 8-1 win on Sunday. The Bears forged ahead on Saturday with an unearned run in the sixth and strong relief performances from Joey Matulovich and Erik Martinez while Sunday’s win came in part from 7 1/3 strong innings from lefty Matt Ladrech.

those classes as well.

In With The NewCal fans may want to hold on to their roster sheets early in the season as the Bears will feature plenty of new faces right away. With 13 freshmen and five transfers on the roster, just over half of Cal’s 2017 roster is comprised of players that will be making their Golden Bears’ debut.

Closing TimeCal does return one of the nation’s top options in the bullpen in junior RHP Erik Martinez. The West Covina, Calif. native saved eight games with a 3.13 ERA in 2016 and, after notching a save in Cal’s first win of 2017 and the 10th of his career, sits just one save behind the Bears’ all-time top 10.

Pre-vious ExperienceShortstop Preston Grand Pre returns for his junior season as Cal’s most experienced field player. The native of Laguna Beach, Calif. hit .290 as a

sophomore in 2016 and brings a career .276 average into the 2017 season. He has appeared in 108 games, starting all 108, and is averaging almost a hit a game with 106 career hits as a Golden Bear.

Staying LocalA large portion of the 2017 Cal roster is comprised of players who call local baseball fields and high schools home. 10 Golden Bears -- Denis Karas, Jeffrey Mitchell, Jr., Joey Matulovich, Matt Ladrech, Rogelio Reyes, Jack Wolger, Andrew Buckley, Max Flower, Connor Jackson, Kevin Flemer -- hail from an East Bay high school. Two more -- Arman Sabouri and Zayne Patino -- are from nearby San Jose while Andrew Vaughn (Santa Rosa), Jared Horn (Napa) and Aaron Shortridge (Napa) also call the Bay Area home.

No Senioritis HereBefore earning recognition by D1Baseball.com as its projected Freshman of the Year in the Pac-12, RHP Jared Horn had a year to remember as a senior at Vintage High School in Napa, Calif. After a season in which he went 9-2 with a 0.67 ERA, 124 strikeouts and only 17 walks in 73.2 innings, Horn earned second team All-America honors from MaxPreps.com. He was also named All-Pacific Coast by the National High School Baseball Coaches Association, All-Region 8 by the ABCA and Rawlings, Monticello Empire League Player of the Year and was a first team Super Elite selection by CalHiSports.com. Horn was also a standout quarterback at Vintage, throwing for 1,352 yards and nine touchdowns in his senior season.

Prospecting For Golden BearsPrior to the start of the 2017 season, D1Baseball.com named sophomore Tanner Dodson as the Pac-12’s No. 2 prospect for the 2018 MLB Draft. Jonah Davis ranked No. 15 on that list while juniors Preston Grand Pre (No. 28) and Denis Karas (No. 30) each made the list for the class of 2017. Jared Horn was named the No. 1 impact freshman in the conference.

SCOUTING REPORT:

• The Red Raiders traveled to Starkville, Miss. to open the season and went 3-1 with two wins over West-ern Illinois and a split against Missis-sippi State. Texas Tech also earned a Tuesday win over New Mexico State.• Went 47-20 in 2016 and finished the season in the CWS where the Red Raiders beat Florida but lost to TCU and eventual champ Coastal Carolina.• Head coach Tim Tadlock welcomes back 16 letterwinners and three start-ing pitchers from his 2016 Big 12 championship team. The Red Raiders had nine players selected in the 2016 MLB Draft but do return All-Americans OF Tanner Gardner, RHP Davis Martin and LHP Steven Gingery• All-Time Series: 1-1• LAST MEETING: The Bears and Red Raiders met in Berkeley in 2016 but rain shortened the series and the teams split with Cal earning a 9-2 win and Texas Tech winning 11-8.

round number in 2017 as the Bears’ two NCAA championship teams celebrate significant milestones.

This season marks the 70th anniversary of Cal’s landmark 1947 team that won the first-ever NCAA baseball title. A pair of wins over Yale in Kalamazoo, Mich. clinched the historic triumph as Clint Evans’ squad beat a group of Bulldogs that included future president and then-team captain George H.W. Bush. Led all season by California Intercollegiate Baseball Association batting champion John Fiscalini, All-American pitcher Nino Barnise and multi-sport Cal legend Jackie Jensen, the Bears won the final game of the season 8-7 to bring the nation’s first college baseball title back to Berkeley.

10 years later, Cal repeated the feat under head coach George Wolfman, again winning the CIBA to earn an invitation to the NCAA Tournament. This time, a series win over Pepperdine in the District 8 playoffs punched Cal’s ticket to Omaha and the Bears went a perfect 5-0 at Rosenblatt Stadium to earn the crown. A 1-0 win over Penn State in the final game clinched the title. Earl Robinson, Charles Thompson and Doug Weiss were named All-Americans and Wolfman was named National Coach of the Year. Both Evans (No. 13) and Wolfman (No. 66) have had their numbers retired by Cal Baseball.

Esquer Among Nation’s BestCal head coach David Esquer is in his 18th season with a career record of 500-438-2 (.532). In 2011, he led the Bears to the program’s first appearance at the College World Series since 1992 and was named National Coach of the Year.
