PROJECT DESCRIPTIONThis was a self-directed project. We could experiment with any process as long it dealt with typography.

PROCESS AND METHODOLOGYWhile thinking about the direction I wanted to take this project, I thought about things from typography that I wanted to work more with. I like working with grids because there is a sense of order and everything has a place. I started to think of what I could create that I haven’t done before while using grids. A calendar seemed like a great opportunity to design something useful while still learn-ing more about grids and structure. My first thoughts were to create multiple calendars so there would be a large variety of layouts and designs. As time permitted I focused on creat-ing one complete calendar.

RESEARCH/INSPIRATIONI mostly used Pinterest and Pinterest links as inspiration. I paid attention to how designers organized the days within the month. I also noticed that there was variation between calendars that would flip to each month and ones that were one full page with the whole year laid out.

DESIGN STRATEGIESI wanted to design multiple calendars so I could use various ideas from my research. I started with a basic grid structure that I could lay out all of the months on one poster. After I started that one I started thinking of ways to make a flip calendar with one month on each page. I thought each month could feature an image of the accompanying flower that is in season or a vegetable that is in harvest. I researched flowers and vegetables only to drop that idea because I didn’t like the layout of the flip calendar. I then thought to create a calendar that didn’t highlight the holidays, but it would highlight the major sporting events of the year. I worked on a one page spread for that one also. After starting these two calen-dars I worked on polishing the design for both of them so at least I could have two calendars instead of just one. Toward the end I mainly focused on the large calendar as a monthly flip one. I worked on creating an interesting inside to the calendar while also finishing off the back side which features the large grid calendar.

EVALUATIONOverall, I think I created a calendar that can be a functional design piece. That calendar being the larger flip calendar. The sports calen-dar was an experiment that still needs to be refined. I learned more about grids and struc-ture and how to align type on a page.
