1 Calendar - July to December 2019 Calendar of Indigenous peoples’ events – Part Two July to December 2019 Girra Maa, the Indigenous Health Discipline at the Graduate School of Health (GSH) UTS, provided a calendar of ‘lively and active’ events between January to June, and now we have ‘part two’ to share! The aim of the calendars is to provide you with a snapshot of the wide range of Indigenous peoples’ resources and happenings to tap into. It’s not a complete list of course, there’s always more happening than we know about. Check out Facebook regularly for Indigenous-led and focused events too. None of these events represent things we endorse as such. Here we hope you will find inspiration, a way to be connected, and information to share with others. We aim to be as inclusive as possible. We are in awe of these gatherings, conferences, music, tourism, storytelling, school holiday fun, arts and markets… arranged by what’s on each month particularly in the Sydney area, but also nationally. Just a note about conferences – they’re the meeting dates rather than when Abstracts are due. And at the end of our calendar we’ve added a few that involve Indigenous people but are not by Indigenous people as such. In the spirit of spreading the word about the strengths of Australia’s First Peoples - enjoy! Aboriginal Chronic Conditions Network 2019 Conference Power in Partnerships

27 August 2019 Kirribilli Club Milsons Point, Sydney The NSW Government is committed to working in partnership with Aboriginal people, services and communities to address health disparities and improve health outcomes.1 Meaningful partnerships are critical to effective change.

As outlined in the NSW Aboriginal Health Plan 2013-2023, building trust through partnerships can be achieved by building relationships with and between service providers from the Aboriginal Health & Medical Research Council (AH&MRC), and the Aboriginal community controlled health services (ACCHSs). These relationships are important for service planning, design and implementation to improve health disparities for Aboriginal people. There is a need for coordination across all health services at national, state and local levels, including ACCHSs, local health districts/speciality health networks (LHD/SHNs), primary health networks (PHNs), other non-government organisations and private service providers.

With this in mind, the Agency for Clinical Innovation (ACI) will coordinate the 2019 Aboriginal Chronic Conditions Network Conference in partnership with the Centre for Aboriginal Health, AH&MRC and PHNs.

This year’s theme focuses particularly on the need for genuine partnerships and collaboration with Aboriginal organisations and communities. This is key to help build self-determination and the capacity for Aboriginal services being involved in designing and implementing in creating better health outcomes for Aboriginal people

2019 Australian Rural & Remote Mental Health Symposium Shining a light on the challenges and opportunities in Australian rural health care

28-30 October 2019 Venue TBC, Adelaide, SA Hear insights from experts who are working to improve mental health services within rural and remote areas and discover what you can do to provide and advocate for equal mental health care for all Australians at the 2019 Australian Rural & Remote Mental Health Symposium. Australians living and working in rural and remote areas are only able to access mental health services at a fifth of the rate of those in urban areas. This inequality poses serious risks for a large population of Australians, resulting in increased suffering of those seeking help, support and treatment for mental health issues.
