February Fun RallyPostponedDue to WeatherWe had to postpone the 18 Feb Fun Rally due to the snow and sleet predicted for the rally area. Joe and Jay planned a great route and had over forty people signed up. How-ever, the nice back roads chosen for the Rally were NOT designed for the combination of snow and BMW summer tires. So we decided to be a little conservative and wait for a better day!

Rally has been rescheduled to Saturday, May 20th, when we can enjoy those roads even more.

President’s CornerBy: Bill Oates

“...I consider it a great honor

to serve as your president

for the next year. ”

das Kummet - March • April 2006 www.tidewaterbmwcca.org 5

Let me start out by saying that I consider it a great honor to serve as your president for the next year. My goals are to keep the organization moving for-

ward in the most transparent way possible. I would like

to have more board meet-ings that are open to ev-eryone. Lastly we need create an atmosphere in which we can retain our

new members beyond their fi rst year.

Let me tell you a little about who I am. My background has been in the areas of economic development and housing. I had worked for the City of Syracuse before retiring. One of the things that I have learned about retirement is that I don’t much care for it. My involve-ment with the car club has provided a degree of mental stimulation that I was missing. The other area that I am interested in is golf. I am pretty much addicted to it so if anyone wants to play let me know.

Actually, this is my second time around as a car club member. During the late sixties, I bought my fi rst bmw, a 69 2002, and acquired a membership at that time, in the Genesee Valley Chapter. The 2002 was fol-lowed by a wonderful 2002tii. I owned this car for 14 years. Because I

was young and some say

not too smart, I refuse to buy snow tires and as a result got stuck in the snow banks of Syracuse a lot. I discov-ered that because the car was so light I could shift the car into fi rst gear, get the wheels spinning, get out, push the car out of the snow bank, jump back and continue on my way. In thinking back about those times I am still not sure why I didn’t just get snow tires. I will not have to engage in that silly and probably dangerous behavior (It was a cool thing to do) in my second time around in the Tidewater Chapter. When it snows here everything just shuts down. Since there is no place to go, you can’t get stuck.

Let me close by talking about two things. First I was very surprise and gratifi ed with the attendance at the dinner. We had the largest turn out I can ever remember. Appar-ently, Gary Wickstrand developed a Midas touch for this dinner, and I am happy to ride his coattails.

The last thing, since this is my fi rst attempt at writing anything for a newsletter I am not exactly sure what form this will always take. I guess my major concern is whether I will have things to say

on a regular basis. Hopefully I can keep the members up to date about what the president’s offi ce is doing and use this space to bring new insights about club plans and activities.

Thanks for listening,

Bill

April Driving School

Is your Ultimate Driving Machine missing The Ultimate Driver? Here’s a good start to get those skills to really enjoy your BMW. Check out the April 15 driving school sponsored by Virginia International Raceway. This will be our fi rst event at Newport News/Williamsburg International Airport on Bland Blvd. in Newport News. This new facility offers acres of clean fl at pavement and is easy to reach from the Peninsula and the Southside.

More good news - The fee for the school has been reduced this year and includes lunch. This promises to be our best schools in years.

The driving school is designed for the novice or anyone who wants experience pushing their car past the limits of the normal everyday driving events. The focus of the school is improving your skills so you will be better prepared to face emergencies on the open road.

On the skid-pad, you can safely experience traction loss and learn how to recover control. It’s a real confi dence builder. The other drills such as slalom and lane change teach you to ‘look ahead’ and avoid an accident.

You will learn what ABS is and how it works; driving the car and keeping under control through extreme conditions. Most people rarely use their ABS system in everyday driving, but here you can activate your car’s ABS and learn how to use it to control the car in an emergency – a real confi dence builder. Students are surprised at how quickly their cars can brake; even in the wet (we run the school rain or shine).

In the afternoon we put it all together. This is a fun and full day with enough track time to wear you out; you’ll get plenty of seat time. Of course, experienced drivers, autocrossers, and road race drivers are also welcome! We thrive off of their expertise and knowledge to make us all better drivers.

Don’t miss this school – the next one isn’t until November!

Club driving sessions are organized by both driver and car. All types of cars are eligible, ranging from completely stock street cars to open-wheeled formula cars, sports-racers, track-modifi ed production cars and purpose-built GTs and Stock Cars. Drivers with experience levels running the gamut from novice to veteran racer are welcome in the VIR Club.

Off the track, the Clubhouse’s Oak Tree Tavern is available for fi ne dining and great beverages. Share stories of your on-track adventures in Connie’s Pub, an authentic Irish Pub complete with brass-rail bar and billiard room. Relax on the veranda, overlooking the swimming pool and the rolling countryside stretching out beyond. You can also plan your corporate and social gatherings in this unique and picturesque setting.

If you plan to stay the night or weekend, The Lodge at VIR offers 27 rooms featuring fi rst-class accommodations, all trackside. The rooms are complete with a large fl at-screen television; satellite TV; CD/DVD player; wireless high-speed Internet connection; Jacuzzi garden tub; and hardwood fl oors.

Club membership includes VIP family passes for all professional and amateur racing events at VIR, including the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series, Grand-Am Cup, AMA Superbike Championship, SCCA racing and a variety of vintage races. For family members whose interest doesn’t necessarily revolve around a racetrack, VIR’s natural trails through the majestic oaks along the Dan River are available for hiking, and shopping for that perfect antique piece is handy in the historic districts of nearby Danville or South Boston.

If you are an automotive enthusiast who wants to drive your car on a great racetrack in demanding conditions; attend some of the most exciting professional and amateur racing in America; relax in sumptuous

surroundings; and include your friends and family while you pursue your passion, the VIR Motorsport Country Club was made for you. The beautiful facility, incomparable amenities and old-fashioned southern hospitality comprise a high-performance destination without equal.

“I knew, when we fi rst saw this place, that it was the perfect venue for the motorsports country club concept,” says Nyholm, who grabbed the chance to return to the South after a very successful career in commercial real estate in New York and Connecticut. “This beautiful setting, with one of the world’s most scenic racetracks, combined with the amenities, conveniences and activities that we can provide, gives the motorsport enthusiast a lifestyle option that hasn’t been available before, and one that we think is a can’t-miss opportunity.”

It’s been six years since VIR reopened, and the plan conceived by Siegel and Nyholm seems to be working to perfection. Memberships in the club are steadily increasing, and the track is booked almost year-round, occupied between spectator weekends and Member Days with racing schools, test days for race teams, manufacturer ride-and-drives, various car clubs, television commercial shoots and private rentals.

It’s unlikely that auto racing will make too big a dent in those other “club sports” like golf, tennis, swimming and racquetball in the coming years, but for those whose hearts race at the sound of a multi-valve, dual-cam racing engine and the sight of beautifully crafted hand-made bodywork, VIRginia International Raceway has created an outlet for their passion that allows them to involve the whole family.

Keeping up with the Joneses will never be the same.

tired old 325’s into a pair of formidable Spec E30’s ready for the track. Our fi rst order of business was parts. It would take a lot of shinny new pieces to transform these utilitarian commuter cars into purebred racing machines. Actually, the build process was made quite easy by following the very well thought out Spec E30 class rules. The rules specifi cally detail all required “race” parts, suspension changes and allowable modifi cations.

To keep costs down, the rules allow for only the things that make sense to be changed or “improved” for track duty. We replaced the car’s suspension components including springs, Bilstein shocks and big sway bars. Dave also treated the engines to new seals. New clutches, rotors, race pads and all the required safety items (seat, roll cage, fi re system etc) were installed in the cars. After a few short weeks, both cars were nearly complete and ready for the track. The entire build process was relatively inexpensive. But don’t let the low build costs fool you; when we took the fi nished cars to the track, they consistently ran faster lap times than cars costing 3-4 times as much. Better yet, our cars ran week-in, week-out for an entire year’s worth of track events and they haven’t missed a beat. The reliability and durability of these cars is nothing short of amazing.

Equality, low costs and readily available donor cars/parts are what make racing a Spec E30 so much fun. The series was designed from the onset to keep costs to a minimum and pit drivers against one another in equally prepared cars that perform exactly alike. That way driver skill, and not deep pockets, determines who runs at the front. This recipe for success has become infectious. The numbers of E30 competitors are growing at every race. By the end

of 2005, we had 16 cars in the fi eld and a projected 20-25 for the 2006 season.

Since then, Dave Pallister left Checkered Flag and started

his own independent BMW Service center called “DP Motorwerks”. He is currently busy building three more Spec E30

racecars for clients. I’m glad to report that over the

2005 season, we successfully campaigned our cars and scored

several podium fi nishes with no DNF’s. I can attest to the fact that if anyone is interested in getting into real “wheel to wheel” racing, or just building a bullet proof DE track car, a Spec E30 is the way to go.

After owning a dozen or so various Porsche models I decided to make my fi rst BMW - A RACE CAR—am I glad I did! I can’t say enough about the incredible handling, quality and reliability of my 325i; it really is an amazing car. After a year of running my E30 at the track harder than I had ever thought possible, I was so impressed with the marque, that I sold my 911 streetcar and bought a 2006 E90 for my daily driver. My motto now is “Better late than never”.

I like fl ying jets in the Navy and look forward to going to work everyday—but I LOVE RACING! I can hardly wait for the next track weekend to roll around! I could go on and on about how exciting last season’s races were, but that’s a story I’ll save for another time. If anyone is interested in getting involved or fi nding out the specifi cs how to get out on track, please feel free to contact either Dave or I or just go to the Spec E30 racing website to check it out. Keeping Up With the JonesesMoves Into the Fast LaneBy: John Gardner

There is no more time-honored American tradition than Keeping Up With the Joneses. This informal measure of one’s self-esteem and success runs the gamut of asset comparison from car and home to clothes and jewelry to

memberships in prestigious clubs and associations.

Since the end of the Second World War, upwardly mobile Americans

have lined up to join all sorts of

lifestyle-enhancing “activity” clubs. First it

was yacht and golf clubs in the 1950s, then swim and tennis clubs in the swinging ‘60s and ‘70s. The ‘80s and ‘90s brought us racquetball clubs, exercise clubs, aerobic clubs, dance clubs. Nowadays, there’s a club for just about any athletic endeavor you can imagine, and apparently no shortage of prospective new members.

Unless, of course, your idea of athletic competition involves automobile racing.

Just as racing drivers have always been overlooked when it comes to comparisons involving athletes, auto racing has had a hard time getting itself included among other “mainstream” sports.

That, however, is beginning to change. And now, thanks to a couple of car-loving real estate developers, racing enthusiasts now have their own club to which to belong and Keeping Up With the Joneses has grabbed a lower gear and accelerated directly into the fast lane.

In 1957, a small group of racing enthusiasts opened Virginia International Raceway, a beautiful 3.27-mile natural-terrain road racing circuit situated on the banks of the Dan River near Danville, Va. The track fl ourished and gained a reputation as the most challenging road racing circuit east of the Mississippi, but hard times

came calling in the early ‘70s and the track was shuttered in 1974.

Fast forward to 1999, when New York-based real estate developer and vintage sports car racer Harvey Siegel acquired the run-down property with a vision to create America’s fi rst motorsports country club, a lifestyle destination resort for racing enthusiasts. It wasn’t a new concept; similar ideas had been bandied about for the previous decade, at locations from coast to coast. However, Siegel and his partner, Connie Nyholm, were the fi rst to actually bring the concept to fruition, and their foresight has added a whole new dimension to the traditional image of a country club.

That vision became a reality with the creation of the VIR Motorsport Country Club.

The VIR Club boasts one of America’s most challenging and historic racing circuits as its centerpiece. The 1,200-acre facility is situated on pastoral rolling hills alongside the Dan River. The site’s original plantation house, built in the 1840s and restored in 2000, serves as a clubhouse, complete with a full-service restaurant, billiard room,

an authentic Irish pub and a swimming pool.

The VIR Club schedules “members only” driving days each month, February through November, over 17 events per

year. Our members drive VIR’s historic

3.27-mile Full Course; the fast 2.26-mile North

Course; our technical 1.64-mile South Course; and the longest road racing circuit in North America, VIR’s 4.2-mile Grand Course. Professional racers are seasoned by experience on

various tracks around the world. The VIR Club offers the same diversity without the time and expense of

globetrotting.

Even though there is no racing on a Member Driving Day, fl aggers and corner workers make sure members are safe and driving at their own comfort level. Member Driving Days are divided into four groups, with four half-hour sessions allowed for each group per day. Everyone from the novice to the competition driver will fi nd a spot to suit them. In addition, professional coaches are available for instruction and assistance.

Budget Racing a Spec E30 By: George Perry

“Better late than never”

As a US Navy Fighter pilot, I love speed and I’m as competitive as they come. Driving sports cars and racing at the track have been in my blood since before I could walk. After driving and racing various Porsches models for years, I fi nally decided it was time to settle down and start a family. With the arrival of our son, my wife quit work to be a full-time mom. We bought a brand new house to accommodate our larger family, and it really put a crimp on the racing budget. Even with all these changes, the one thing that remained the same was my strong desire to continue racing.

Without the limitless budget required to continue racing P-cars, a friend of mine, Dave Pallister, suggested we sell our Porsches and switch over to race in the NASA sanctioned, Spec E30 class. Dave is a Master BMW tech who has worked at Checkered Flag BMW for years. After some research, I

determined the cost of fi elding an E30 was an “order of magnitude” less than what I

had been accustomed to. So I decided “what the heck, I’ll give Bimmer’s

a try.” A few months later, the two of us sold our racecars and got to work formulating a plan to leap headlong into E30 racing.

After thorough planning, the day

had come to stop talking, thinking, and dreaming about our new racecars.

It was time to buy, so the search was on. We needed two straight, rust free E30’s. I found my car at, of all places, a dealership. They took the car in on trade and didn’t want an old E30 ugly-ing up their lot, so I got it for a song. It was a very well cared for iris blue 1989

325i with “only” 165,000 miles, all of which were from one owner. We found Dave’s car in Raleigh NC. It’s a bronzit 1989 325is with 149,000 miles on the odometer.

Now that we had our cars, the time had come to get busy transforming a couple of

“The Perfect Space”

Living in Tidewater has its advantages for our classic cars. Our cars don’t have to hibernate all winter like cars up north, where the roads are covered with salt all winter – a short nap will do every once in a while. Down here the garage is “the perfect space” to keep our loved ones cozy and safe from the elements when they need a place to rest. But the perfect space may not be the safest. In the garage our cars are under constant threat of attack from all sorts of things; bikes, ladders, lawn chairs, rakes and golf clubs are all ready to fall like guillotines, trying to kill our beautiful paint jobs.

Take my garage, for example. There have been times when I had only a narrow trail leading from the door to what used to be a workbench (now only distinguishable as the tallest pile of stuff in the garage). Last summer my garage got so bad that in order to get my car inside, I had to get out of the car while it was still outside. Then, leaving it in neutral, I shut the doors and pushed the car into the space it vacated when I had pulled it out by the bumper earlier in the day. Not the safest situation for a car with nice paint. But fortunately, my car has old paint, which allows me to

pile stuff on top of the hood, roof and trunk and push it into the garage like an oversized fi le cabinet drawer.

So how did it get so bad? Why do some of us save all these old parts? I’ve fi nally fi gured it out. The world’s car parts suppliers somehow know when we throw out old car parts. These parts promptly double in price and shortly afterward become NLA (no longer available) in the parts catalogues. So we keep everything from old wiper blades to transmissions and wheels...taking up all available space in the garage and the garage attic.

So what can you do? Well, the way I see it you’re going to need a shed for the lawn and garden stuff, one large shed for storage of aforementioned car parts, a shed for your wife’s storage needs (i.e. furniture, extra freezer, clothes, shoes...), plus a two-car garage for his and her daily driv-ers – not to mention a place to do maintenance on our cars – and...Oh...a place to store our classic cars. Like maybe a warehouse. Hey – don’t laugh – the only thing holding me back is money...and maybe space...

Next time, we’ll talk about the dos and don’ts of parking out in public space.

Enjoy the ride.

In addition, professional coaches are available for instruction and assistance.

tired old 325’s into a pair of formidable Spec E30’s ready for the track.

Don’t miss this school – the next one isn’t until November!

das Kummet - March • April 2006 www.tidewaterbmwcca.org 15

Bill

Rusty Barton35 yearmember and retiring Treasurer

Our annual banquet was held February 4th at the Omni hotel in Newport News. We had over 100 attendees Thank you for coming. I feel confi dent that everyone who attend-ed enjoyed an evening of fellowship, good food and drink, and walked away with a nice door prize to their liking.

We were honored to have our Regional VP, Carlos Diaz-Estrada, and his wife, Penny visit with us. Thank you for coming. Carlos shared some of the events and issues that are happening on the national level. We also had the plea-sure of roasting our long time member and offi cer of 35 years, Rusty Barton. Way to go Rusty and thank you for all you have done for the club. We are a better organization because of your time and energies over the past 35 years.

Thank you to all of these businesses who give our mem-bership great value day in and day out on services and products that we desire and need. Please remember to thank them when you have an opportunity to call upon their services.

I hope we see our attendance grow through-out the year and we have more occasions to say thank you to all those who make owning a BMW a pleasure. See you at an event!

A big THANK YOU! By: Gary Wickstrand
