MUDE - Design and Fashion Museum - LisbonLisboa is fast becoming one of the must visit capitals of the cultural tourism destinations, now with the opening of MUDE - Fashion and Design Museum, in the capital’s historic centre. In addition to representing an important contribution to the Portuguese capital’s cultural and arts offer, MUDE, located on the Rua Augusta walking street, forms part of the Baixa downtown renovation project, housed within a magnificent building that was once a bank’s head office.The building is a work in progress concept, and will be totally renovated in order to house within its four levels, the Museums collection and services, bookshop and coffee shop, as well as rehearsal and conference halls. The project also envisions areas for educational purposes, an auditorium, exhibit halls, with its inauguration scheduled for 2010.It is regarded as one of the best collections of its kind in the world. The inaugural exhibit, entitled “Preview” consists of 170 works from Corbusier to Azzedine Alaïa, that allow us to “visit” stories and events from the 20th and 21st centuries.The link between the worlds of design and fashion, the high quality of the collection, and the museum’s personal concept, make MUDE a unique cultural venue on the international scene, and turning Lisboa into one of the new “design capitals”. --

Calouste Gulbenkian MuseumAs the founder wished his superb collection was to be put on display “under one roof” in the especially designed museum, which opened to the public in 1969. One of the finest private collections in the world, boasting “only the best”. It ranges from Egyptian to early 20th century art. The Museum presents a unique collection of jewellery and glass by René Lalique.

Medeiros e Almeida FoundationThis Foundation houses a collection of decorative art, created in 1973 and has important collections of Chinese and European painting, jewellery, tapestry, sacred art, glass, furniture, and silverware from the 16th century onwards.

Ricardo Espírito Santo Silva FoundationThe most important collection of the Museum is the Furniture Collection, composed of 17th and 18th century household pieces. The museum has other important collections as the Arraiolos carpets and the oriental influenced quilts and embroidered pieces of cloth.

Berardo MuseumThe Joe Berardo Modern and Contemporary Art Collection covers almost all the major modern artistic movements up to the most recent developments in contemporary artistic creation. A large part of the collection will be on permanent loan at the new Berardo Museum – Exhibition Centre of Centro Cultural de Belém in Lisbon with such names as Picasso, Miro, Bacon, Moore, Mondrian, Duchamp, Warhol among many others.

National Republican Guard – Charanga On the garden of Viera Portuense in Belém, monthly on the 3rd Sunday at 11am in addition to the changing of the Guard in front of the Presidential Palace in Belem you can also see the Charanga. The National Republican Guard presents this unique event. 28 horsemen of the Cavalry Regiment ride on pure-bread Lusitanos at a gallop while playing military marches. If you are in the neighbourhood do not miss this amazing event.

Flea Market - “Ladra Fair in Lisboa” Where you will find all you want! It reminds foreigners of Paris’s flea market, it attracts crowds looking for that second-hand bargain. The conversation of a variety of languages including African, Pakistani and Chinese traders, as well as collectors on the lookout for some rarity or other only match the variety of goods and things that catch the eye. This flea market runs every Tuesday and Saturday from sunrise till noon.

Nations ParkFeaturing some stunning modern architecture as well as family-geared attractions, restaurants and bars and relaxing gardens. The Park’s major attraction is the Oceanarium, with 25,000 fish, birds and mammals in a strikingly designed, two-storey aquarium. For interactive displays about science and technology, visit the Knowledge Pavilion. Take the cable car to get from the north to the south end of the park.
