The Vancouver International Writers' Festival, in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Toronto and the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver, presents two events with Nicola Lagioia, whose La ferocia (Ferocity) won Italy’s Strega Prize for his cinematic portrait of the moral and political corruption of an entire society:

He is a regular host of Pagina3, a book and culture program on Italy’s national radio. Lagioia’s English-language debut, Ferocity, is a dramatic tale about a young socialite whose suicide sends her brother into a spiral as he finds out more about his estranged sister and her rise to prominence. Nicola Lagioia will also be present at Calgary/Banff’s WordFest (Oct. 9-15, www.wordfest.com). On

Cora, a 19-year-old girl, has recently returned to the place where she spent her

childhood, Bucco. She is helping her father Michele, mayor of the town, to

organize the celebrations for the Feast of the Virgin of Bucco, an annual event

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19, 7:00 PM AND 9:10PM

Cinecenta

University of Victoria, Student Union Bldg, 3800 Finnerty Rd, Victoria

Screening in Victoria of "Le amiche" (The Girlfriends), by Michelangelo Antonioni On the occasion of the 17th "Week of the Italian Language in the World”, Cinecenta, with the assistance of the Consulate General of Italy, presents two special screenings of a classic of Italian cinema: Le amiche (The Girlfriends), by maestro Michelangelo Antonioni (in Italian with English subtitles). This 1955 drama is a brilliantly observed, fragmentary depiction of modern

bourgeois life, conveyed from the perspective of five Turinese women. As

four of the friends try to make sense of the suicide attempt of the fifth, they

find themselves examining their own troubled romantic lives. With

suggestions of the theme of modern alienation that would define his later masterpieces such as

L’avventura and Red Desert, Antonioni’s film is a devastating take on doomed love and fraught

friendship. –Criterion Collection

MONDAY, APRIL 10, 6:00 PM UBC Robson Square 800 Robson Street, Vancouver

"Made in Italy or Made in China?” A talk by UBC Prof. Gaoheng Zhang presented by the Dante Alighieri Society of BC

Since Marco Polo, intercultural and trade relations between China and Italy have

flourished. In recent decades, the two countries faced strenuous competition in

the manufacturing sector. According to conventional wisdom, while Italian

fashion represents creativity and refined style, mass production characterizes

‘Made in China’ garments. Dr. Zhang’s talk will focus on the textile and clothing

industry in Prato, Italy, which has become emblematic of the presumed conflicts

between these two modes of manufacturing.

It is right in the heart of Tuscany, in Prato, that a Chinese diaspora has been

increasingly involved in the production of low-and middle-end ready-to-wear fashion. For some local

industrialists, this is an unwelcome development, as it damages their businesses and the ‘Made in

Italy’ label. Others have argued that this evolution has been beneficial to the ‘Made in Italy’ fashion

sector. What has been the role of the media in conveying these dynamics to the public? And why

should we care about the ‘Made in Italy ‘and ‘Made in China’ label? Dr. Zhang will use the Prato case

study to provide insights into the complex relationship between two of the biggest producers in the

‘fast fashion’ market: Italy and China.

Dr. Gaoheng Zhang is Assistant Professor of Italian Studies at UBC. His research specializations include

Chinese immigration to Italy and Italian-Chinese relations. He was educated in the fields of Italian

studies and comparative cultural studies at Beijing Foreign Studies University (B.A.) and at New York

University (M.A., Ph.D.).

A related exhibition titled ‘Global Routes: China, Italy, Toronto’ will be on display at UBC Robson

Square during March 17-April 14, 2017

Admission is free, pre-registration is required: [email protected]

TUESDAY, MARCH 7, 7:30 PM Roundhouse Community Centre, Vancouver 181 Roundhouse Mews, Vancouver

Vancouver, City of Contrasts: Breaking Down the Fourth Wall An exhibition of photographs and poems by Guido Bertelli and Diego Bastianutti

Italian-Canadian poet Diego Bastianutti and photographer Jon Guido Bertelli explore life in the Downtown Eastside through word and image, in this event organized in cooperation with Roundhouse Community Arts and Recreation Centre and in collaboration with the Consulate General of Italy. These artists reveal that the world of the city core is one of contrast and contradiction contained within the span of a few streets. Contiguous to the design houses of Gucci, Chanel and

Versace: spaces of high affluence, economic abundance and cutting edge aesthetic fashion, are the

dwelling places of the city’s most impoverished. The artists underscore that there is very little,

humanly speaking, that sets these two worlds apart.

Some of you may remember prof. Bastianutti from the series of talks on Venice he gave at the Istituto

Italiano di Cultura in the spring of 2012, and photographer Guido Bertelli from the “Vancouver, City of

Contrasts” exhibition that the Istituto hosted in May, 2012 and last year, in cooperation with the

Consulate General of Italy and the Italian Cultural Centre.

The exhibit will remain on view from March 1 until April 30.

MARCH 4 - 6 Norman & Annette Rothstein Theatre, Vancouver 950 West 41st Avenue, Vancouver

Italy’s “Spellbound Contemporary Ballet” at Chutzpah! 2017 Spellbound Contemporary Ballet returns to Chutzpah! with their full-length production of Carmina Burana, choreographed by company Artistic Director Mauro Astolfi. The combination of Astolfi’s skillful choreography

and Spellbound’s exquisite dancers accompanied by the powerful music of Carl Orff, Antonio Vivaldi and V. Caracciolo, makes for a memorable audience experience. In this telling, Carmina Burana touches on topics as familiar today as they were in the 13th century. From the turning of fortune’s wheel to the fleeting nature of life, from joy in spring’s coming to the pleasure of the senses, these themes expressed through the physicality of dance showcase the restless, rebellious spirit of another time that we recognize in our own world. This event is presented in collaboration with the Istituto Italiano di Cultura in Toronto, Il Centro – Italian Cultural Centre and with the assistance of the Consulate General of Italy in Vancouver. Italian Design Day 2017 De Signo Disegno Design An Italian Journey

by Alessandro Colombo

Design in Italy permeates the fields of culture, art and philosophy to such an extent that it constitutes our society’s

innate pattern; its novelty combined with the solidity of the traditional handicrafts and with the unprejudiced experimentation gives origin to Italian designers’ personal style. Besides, thanks to the notion that beauty must characterize products of mass consumption, art and design coexist and flourish much to their mutual benefit. To celebrate this all-encompassing phenomenon, on the same day, in 100 locations around the world, 100 “ambassadors” of Italian culture (designers, entrepreneurs, journalists, critics, communicators, teachers...) will illustrate the concept of excellence. The Italian Design Day will be inaugurated, in conjunction with the 56th edition of the Salone del Mobile, and will involve Italy’s diplomatic and consular network and the Italian Institutes of Culture throughout the world. In Vancouver, this honour will be given to world-renowned architect Alessandro Colombo (from Architecture Firm “Studio Cerri & Associati” Milan), who will take part in a round table on Italian design together with guests from Emily Carr University and from the Chamber of Commerce in Canada West. This event is organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Italy in cooperation with Triennale di Milano and presented in Vancouver by the Consulate General of Italy and Emily Carr University of Art and Design in cooperation with the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Canada West. The event is open to the public but pre-registration is required by Sunday, February 26th: [email protected] = = = = = = =

FEBRUARY, 2017

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 2 TO SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 4 Scotiabank Dance Centre 677 Davie Street, Vancouver

Alessandro Sciarroni at PuSh! Festival 2017

In his new show, titled FOLK-S, Will You Still Love Me

Tomorrow?, Italian choreographer Alessandro Sciarroni takes a

traditional dance form and works it for all it’s worth. It’s a sheer physical feat of performance. The

schuhplattler (“shoebeater”) is a Bavarian folk dance where its performers slap their shoes and legs

with their hands; it’s ecstatic, kinetic and one walloping workout. Here the dance is torn from its

musical and cultural idioms: Sciarroni wears some nice lederhosen, but other than that we’re witness

to the liberating pleasure of abstraction—enduring, playful, even humorous.

“Using ironic distance, Daniele Luchetti examines conventional and unconventional life choices, in the story of a marriage seen through the eyes of a budding young filmmaker...A delicate, nuanced film that is unexpectedly moving in its portrait of a young Italian family living through the turbulent, freedom-loving '70s, Those Happy Years uses ironic distance to talk about very intimate things” -- Hollywood Reporter, Sep. 2013
