Martin Named Commander of the Year

Beverly Kay Martin was recently named Commander of the Year by the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary for the State of North Carolina. Pictured presenting the

award is Past State Com-mander Ginger Bish on left. Commander Martin is Commander of the D.A.V. Auxiliary #6 in Hudson, NC, Commander of the District 9 Auxiliaries and is life member of D.A.V.A. She has been commander since the local chapter was chartered in 2009. The award was presented at the distr i ct meet ing in Newland, NC in October. Her husband, David, is Ad-jutant of D.A.V. #6 in Hud-son and a life member.

Stuffed Tomato Salad

Ingredients 2 cups chicken stock

1 1/2 tablespoons gelatine 1/4 cup chopped chicken

1/4 cup chopped ham 2 chopped pickles

2 chopped pimentos 1 tablespoon lemon juice

1 tablespoon chopped parsley 6 tomatoes

Directions Heat chicken stock; season highly; dissolve gela-tine in stock; add chicken, ham, pickles, pimentos, lemon juice and parsley. Remove a slice from the top of each tomato, scoop out the pulp, fill the shells with the chicken jelly. Chill and serve on crisp lettuce leaves.

Homemade French Mustard Three tablespoonfuls of mustard, one tablespoon-ful of granulated sugar, well worked together, then beat in an egg until it is smooth; add one teacupful of vinegar, a little at a time, working it all smooth; then set on the stove and cook three or four min-utes, stirring all the time; when cool, add one ta-blespoonful of the best olive oil, taking care to get it all thoroughly worked in and smooth.

Prescribed Burn In Burke County

If you thought you smelled smoke this past Tues-day and Wednesday, it was most likely coming from the prescribed burn that took place in Burke County. Below is a press release from the U.S. For-est Service.

The U.S. Forest Service conducted a prescribed burn in the Grandfather Ranger District, Pisgah National Forest, on Tuesday, Nov. 4 and Wednes-day, Nov. 5. The agency conducted the 150-acre burn off of Back Irish Creek Rd., about two miles from the Table Rock Fish Hatchery in Burke County. The objective of the burn was to prepare the ground for shortleaf pine planting in the early spring as part of the Roses Creek Environmental Assessment. The Forest Service conducted the one-day burn as part of the Grandfather Restoration Project, a 10-year project designed to restore 40,000 acres of the Grandfather Ranger District. The project is restoring fire-adapted ecosystems by enhancing conditions for a variety of native plants and wild-life, controlling non-native species and protecting hemlocks against hemlock woolly adelgids. The safety of the public and firefighters is the highest priority during a prescribed burn. The public was asked to heed signs posted at trailheads and roads and to stay away from burn areas and closed roads and trails.

To make this possible, we have partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank and our local FairValue Super Market. Happy 129th Birthday Caldwell Baptist Association

The Caldwell Baptist Association had a birthday on Wednesday, October 22nd. Even though there was no birthday celebration the Association did turn 129 years old on that date. The Association was birthed in the Rocky Springs Baptist Church in Collettsville by 16 churches in 1885. Today, there are 74 congregations with over 27,000 members.

Western Piedmont Youth Symphony to Perform Fall Concert

The Western Piedmont Youth Symphony will per-form their Fall Concert on Monday, November 24 at 7 p.m. in the SALT Block Auditorium. General admis-sion with open seating is $7 per person or $20 for family of 4four (includes NC sales tax). The Western Piedmont Youth Symphony is celebrating 42 years of music and music education. These young and talented musicians have been hard at work preparing for their first concert of the season. Caldwell County Student Art Exhibit

The walls of the Caldwell Arts Council will be filled with artwork showing the creativity and talent of Cald-well County’s mid-dle and high school students November 7-21, 2014. New Sculptures coming to Tucker’s Gallery

Caldwell Arts Council is pleased to announce that new sculptures are being installed during the next few weeks in Tucker’s Gallery, an outdoor sculp-ture sales gallery in downtown Lenoir. Tucker’s Gallery is a public/private partnership project be-tween the City of Lenoir and the Caldwell Arts Council. The “Gallery” is located in planters throughout the downtown area. S c u l p t u r e s remain on dis-play for one year from date of installation or until sold.

Dr. Herb Says….Take These Steps To Health

Energy

It is hard to function in life when a person does not have any energy. There are many things that you can do to help your energy level. During your waking hours stay active: Do some-thing. Work and exercise is good for you. And, at the time you are supposed to rest; rest. Stay active during the day and sleep at night. Do not stay up all hours of the night watching TV or anything. Your body needs rest and sleep to have energy for the day. Do not eat foods that deceive you; that give you energy at first then do not feed your body and actually drain your energy supply. Such foods are sugar, and refined carbohydrates. Do not take drugs to try and stimulate energy. Do not drink alcohol or caffeine drinks: they rob your energy. Smoking is bad to deplete your body of energy. Eating too much, and eating all the time, takes a lot of energy. Keep your mind on the Lord and trust in Him. Avoid stress. Worry, anxiety, stress, will zap your energy: when you could just turn it over to the Lord, He can han-dle it better than you can. Drink water and eat fresh and raw foods that God made. Do not eat man-made foods, which are robbed of their nutrients. Do not eat anything animal; it takes too much energy to digest it and process it through the body. Do not eat at night, you will rest.

Low Thyroid

The Thyroid regulates the function of all our cells. It is essential that the thyroid is normal in order to keep our energy up, and our body warm. There are many symptoms of dysfunc-tion when the thyroid is not up to par. The most common are fatigue, depression, cold hands and feet, slow doing everything, headaches, emotional, weak, and just feel cold when every-body else is warm. When waste is left in the body, it putrefies causing a bacterial problem. Bacteria can get in the thyroid and cause mal-function. Some people have been helped by eat-ing foods high in iodine, such as kelp or using iodized salt. It is better just to clean out and eat God’s food. Also you can drink water instead of man-made drinks. Eat foods high in minerals and trace minerals. Eat foods high in B-vitamins. Eat mostly raw foods; cooking kills B-vitamins. Get adequate rest and sleep. Be active; work for exercise. Be sure to eat foods that are good fiber so they will go through the body, and not clog it up. Meats, cheese, and any-thing animal does not have fiber. Digestion does not work properly at night. Be sure to go eliminate colon, three times a day and kidneys seven times.

High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is referring to the pressure that blood exerts on your arteries and veins while the heart is beating and resting. The pressure while the heart beats is called systolic force, and the pressure during the hearts rest moment is called diastolic force. Normal blood pressure is represented by 120 systolic and 80 diastolic. The worst place to get an accurate reading is at the doctor’s office: Some people are up-tight and stressful about going to the doctor, so stress causes blood pressure to be higher. Some things that cause blood pressure not to be normal are: eating at night, eating too much too late, eating sugar and refined car-bohydrates, too much waste left in the body, not eating foods with proper nutrition, especially minerals and amino acids, smoking, taking in caffeine and/or alcohol, side-effects from some prescription drugs, not enough rest, water, oil or exercise and no break in eating. Eat a good breakfast of fruit and protein. Fruit and protein foods such as sunflower seeds, almonds and all nuts, beans avocadoes, bananas, cantaloupes are good sources of calcium, potassium, mag-nesium, minerals. Fruits and vegetables are good sources of vitamins and minerals to help strengthen veins and arteries.

Osteoporosis

Most every person has bone deterioration; some worse than others. We have all been brain-washed to take calcium, and/or drink milk. Milk is designed for an animal growing bones, but not sustaining bones. Once a person gets the bones growing, we need sunshine, exercise, and hormones to sustain healthy bones. When you start growing; start living. Do something; get exercise. Get outside and get some sunshine. Interact with people. In other words, LIVE! Do not just stay cooped up in a box called a house, and do nothing, and let yourself deteriorate. There are other things besides lack of living that cause you to deteriorate. Watching the world and all that the devil is doing in the world, can dry up your spirit, keep you depressed and will take a toll on your body. Watch God: He has a great future for everyone who wants it. He will lift your spirit and give you hope. Also, there are some physical things you can do that can cause you to deteriorate. Eating animal protein actually wears your digestive system down. Eating sugar destroys nutrients and can add to the deterioration of your body. Alcohol, caf-feine, drugs, smoking all take a toll on helping your body to go downhill, and take away your health. Eating too much physical food and not enough spiritual food will cause to deteriorate.

You Can Be Old and Healthy

If we carefully preserve the life force and keep the delicate mechanism of the body in order, the result is health. Without health, no one can distinctly understand or as completely fulfill his obligations to himself, to his fellow-beings, or to his creator. Therefore, the health should be as faithfully guarded as the character. Getting older does not mean we have to have poor health. Genesis 43:28 “And they answered, “Thy servant our father is in good health, he is yet alive.” Genesis 47:9 “And Jacob said unto Pharaoh, The days of the years of my pilgrim-age are a hundred and thirty years.” Jacob had good health at one hundred and thirty years. Moses was still healthy at one hundred twenty years old. Deuteronomy 34:7 “And Moses was a hundred and twenty years old when he died; his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.” Caleb was healthy at age eighty five years old. Joshua 14: 10, 11 “And now, behold, the Lord hath kept me alive and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and five years old. As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me.” He was as healthy at age eighty-five as he was at forty.

Obey God Stay Healthy

Disease, sickness, death are from the devil. God wants us to be healthy. Acts 10:38 “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power; who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil for God was with Him.” Believe in Je-sus and obey Him. If other people want to be sick, we do not have to follow that way. Disobe-dience or following the devil has diseases with it. Deuteronomy 28:27 – 28, 60 – 61 “Boils, scab, itch, whereof thou canst not be healed: Madness and blindness, and astonishment of heart. Diseases which thou wast afraid of; they shall cleave unto thee. Also every sickness and every plague until thou be destroyed.” Disease is not a punishment from God, but a re-ward from following an evil devil. Deuteronomy 7: 12 – 15 “If ye hearken to the Lord, thy God shall keep thee; He will love thee, bless thee. Thou shalt be blessed above all people. And the Lord will take away from thee all sickness and will put none of the evil diseases which thou knowest upon thee.” Obeying God is much better than having headaches, pain of all sorts and a miserable life of sickness. Without health, no one can enjoy life. And it is not worth following the devil and pleasures of sin!

Stay Healthy For God’s Glory Sickness is the body cleansing itself. When someone has the flu, they get diarrhea, throw-up, fever, perspire; this is the body’s way of eliminating toxins. We should never allow ourselves to let toxins build up so bad until the body has to go to drastic measures to cleanse itself. Fasting one day a week is good to let the body do some housecleaning. One of the biggest de-ceptions the devil has pulled off on mankind is thinking we have to eat all the time. Jesus fasted forty days. Jesus never set a bad example. The four thousand people that Jesus fed had been with Jesus for three days with nothing to eat. We cannot even get people to set in church only two hours without wanting to go home and eat. In Rev. 14:7 it says, “Fear God and give glory to Him.” How do you give God glory? 1 Cor. 10:31 “Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.” God made us. The devil is trying to mess up God’s creation. The devil does not want God to receive glory, or for us to be healthy.

Lemon

The Lemon is a natural antiseptic. Lemon juice will destroy harmful bacteria in cuts, or other places in the body. Mix lemon juice with honey and destroy the bacteria that causes a sore throat. Lemon juice is good for acne and eczema. Lemon juice is good to kill the bacteria trying to come through the skin, by way of a boil. Lemon juice is good for blackheads, and clogged skin pores. Put lemon juice on wrinkles, and leave for several hours, and then wash it off, and apply coconut oil. You can rub the inside of the lemon peel over your teeth and gums to help remove stains, and prevent teeth and gum problems. Mix the juice of one large lemon in a glass of water, and put it on the hair and scalp to help with dandruff and give your hair a shine. Lemon juice is also good for relieving the itch of insect bites, and also good for poison oak or ivy. A lemon water fast, one day a week is good to lose excess weight. Lemon juice is good to get rid of stuff that causes breathing and sinus problems.

Granite Falls Veterans Monument Dedication Ceremony Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11, 2014 at 11:11am

Granite Falls, NC, November 3, 2014 – The Granite Falls Vet-erans Memorial will be dedicated on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11, 2014. The festivities will begin with live patriotic music starting at 10:30 a.m. The dedication ceremony will fol-low starting at 11:11 a.m. to honor the time at which the Armi-stice ending World War I was signed. All Town residents, as well as other individuals wishing to honor Veterans, are invited to attend the dedication ceremony that will be held at the monument site at the Granite Falls Recreation Center near Philadelphia Lutheran Church. In addition to the live patriotic music, the dedication ceremony will include the presentation of colors, comments to honor our Veterans and other dedication activities. In case of rain, the ceremony will be held in the gym-nasium of the Granite Falls Recreation Center. Due to limited seating, attendees are encouraged to bring a comfortable lawn chair. This ceremony is one of the many steps the Town of Granite Falls Veterans Committee has taken to make the dream of building a Veterans monument become a reality. The Committee has worked dili-gently for the past 3 years in selecting a site, choosing a design and raising funds for constructing the monument. Caldwell County DAV Forget Me Not Fundraiser

Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 6 of Cald-well County will be observing their annual Forget Me Not Fundraiser Friday and Saturday, Novem-ber 7th and 8th in Granite Falls, Hudson and Le-noir in several locations.

The DAV receives no federal or state funding; our only income is through fundraisers and donations. All monies received (100%) stay in Caldwell County to provide for our veterans and families.

Financial assistance/aids is available when rec-ommended by the county Service Officer. We are a non-profit organization, non-partisan, neither en-dorsing nor opposing candidates for public office.

The Disabled American Veterans provide FREE transportation for veterans, with medical appoint-ments, to the Hickory outpatient clinic, Asheville, Salisbury, Winston Salem or Durham VA Hospi-tals.

The DAV chapter is an award winning chapter in succeeding years for Chapter of the Year, Com-mander of the Year and Honor Guard of the Year. Our Honor Guard provides military funerals for deceased veterans and flag presentation to the spouse/family at no cost.

Membership is open to any veteran with service connected disability, male or female, with any dis-charge other than dishonorable.

Our DAV has a Christian Environment, no gam-bling, card playing or bar or alcoholic beverages.

CCC&TI Hosted A Special Tree Planting

By CCC&TI...Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute and the Foundation of CCC&TI hosted a tree-planting ceremony Tuesday on the campus in Hudson. As part of the institution's on-going celebration of its 50th anniversary, the co-chairs of this year's Foundation Annual Fund Drive gathered for the dedication of a lacebark elm planted in their honor. The 2014 Annual Fund Drive co-chairmen are: founding CCC&TI Presi-dent Dr. Ed Beam, former Board of Trustees Chair-man Brent Kincaid, former Board of Trustees Chairman Dr. Don Lackey, current Board of Trus-tees Chairman Larry Taylor and former Board of Trustees Chairman Hugh Wilson. The Caldwell Arts Council, JE Broyhill Civic Cen-ter and Caldwell County Schools are pleased to present “The Monster Who Ate My Peas” by Art-sPower National Touring Theatre to Caldwell County students Wednesday November 12, 2014 at the JE Broyhill Civic Center as part of the Artists-In-Schools Programs. The Monster Who Ate My Peas, brings a fresh meaning to the well-known phrase, “It’s not easy being green,” at least, if you’re a kid with a plateful of unwanted green peas. This musical is based on the book of the same title by Danny Schnitzlein, and designed for young people in grades K-2. The Caldwell Arts Council, JE Broyhill Civic Center and Caldwell County Schools were proud to bring the North Carolina Youth Tap Ensemble to Caldwell County students on Friday, October 31 at the JE Broyhill Civic Center as part of the Artists-in-Schools program. Their performances featured rhythmic dance from a variety of genres as well as some drumming and singing. NCYTE per-formances included brief stories about the history of tap dance and information about a variety of styles of rhythmic dance. Military Memorabilia at the Museum

To honor all veterans and to celebrate the Granite Falls Veterans' Monument, there will be a display of U. S. Military Memorabilia during the month of November at the Granite Falls History and Trans-portation Museum. Located at 107 Falls Avenue, the museum will be open on Saturdays from noon until 4 pm and on Sundays from 2 until 4 pm. On Sunday, November 9th from 2 until 4 pm, the Granite Falls History Committee will host a recep-tion for those persons lending items for dis-play. The exhibit includes items from World War I to the present. There are uniforms, medals, cita-tions, photos, scrapbooks, dog tags, etc. on dis-play. Shown in the photo is a uniform from the 1950s.
