September 25 & 26, 2013 (Wednesday & Thursday) Travels to High Schools, Free
"ETTY" by Susan Stein (http://www.ettyplay.org) Adapted and performed by Susan Stein and
directed by the acclaimed actor, director and playwright Austin Pendleton, "Etty" is a portrayal of one
woman's struggle to sustain humanity in the face of the Nazis' unspeakable brutality. Etty Hillesum
writes the life she is living - her loves, her work, her wry sense of humor, her deep sensuality and the
moment in history. She offers a new form of resistance, engaging the horror rather than shrinking
from it, as she faces the truth of her circumstances and refuses to lose what she loves in life. "Etty"
asks us to consider our own responsibility today, in a world where the promise of "never again" has

October 1, 2013 (Tuesday) Grades K-5, $3/student "THE PIED BAG-PIPER OF
HAMELIN" by Atlantic Coast Theatre For Youth (www.atlantic-coast-theatre.com) A Scottish
Bag-Piper is hired to lead away the rats invading Hamelin Town, but will the Mayor keep her
promise to pay him? Scottish songs, comic characters & audience participation fill the air in this
hilarious show teaching the importance of honesty.
October 8, 2013 (Tuesday) Grades 3-6, $3/student "MAD DOG AND
ME, BULLYING AND THE POWER OF KINDNESS" by David Gonzalez
(www.gardnerartsnetwork.com) Welcome back this wonderful artist. This engaging
and entertaining mix of world tales and personal stories addresses the culture of
cruelty in our society. Through fables, myths, and stories from his own life growing
up in a rough neighborhood, award-winning storyteller and educator, Dr. David
Gonzalez, offers insights and strategies for cultivating compassionate relationships

October 30, 2013 (Wednesday) Grade 3 & special, 4th & 5th if signed up for
another show, Free ASU STEELY PAN BAND (www.steelband.appstate.edu)
An ensemble of 20 performers and 40 steel drums will perform a variety of music from
traditional soca/calypsos to rock & roll to traditional Appalachian Mountain Music. A
favorite performance every year.
November 13, 2013 (Wednesday) Grades K-2, $3/student "CITY MOUSE, COUNTRY
MOUSE" by Birmingham Children's Theatre (www.bct123.org/on-tour) A mouse named Maudie Mae
thinks country life is mighty fine while her cousin, Montague, wouldn't live anywhere except the big city.
Their musical adventures begin when they decide to pay each other a visit. The two travelers discover
new sights, new tastes and more new noises than they ever imagined on their way to proving there is no
place like home.
November 22, 2013 (Friday) Grades 5-8, Free "I WORE A YELLOW STAR" by
Bright Star Children's Theatre (www.brightstartheatre.com) This powerful 45-minute
production presents an accessible and honest portrayal of the Holocaust. With profound
sensitivity, our actors & educators lead your audience on a journey through pivotal
moments with key historic figures to help them understand this dark chapter in our human
experience. These stories of hope and inspiration help young people understand the
resilience of the human spirit.

December 6, 2013 (Friday) Grades K-5, Free 'HOLIDAYS FROM AROUND THE
WORLD" by Bright Star Children's Theatre (www.brightstartheatre.com) The traditions and
holidays which abound throughout winter are celebrated in this show - from Kwanzaa and
Christmas to the Festival of Lights. This unique production offers young people a look into the
celebrations that occur around the globe during this special time of year.
January 9, 2014 (Thursday) Grades K-2, $3/student "BARKER BILL'S WAGTIME RE-
VUE" by Grey Seal Puppets (www.greysealpuppets.com) The Big Boss is threatening to shut down
Barker Bill and his Wagtime Revue. Times have changed and the Big Boss doesn't think that Barker
Bill's show is worth the trouble. The Big Boss decides to give the show one more chance, but there's
a catch! This time it's up to the audience, your students, to decide whether the show will go on . . .

January 24, 2014 (Friday),Grades 3-8, Free "LINCOLN & TUBMAN" by Bright Star
Children's Theatre (www.brightstartheatre.com) Two of the most iconic figures of the 19th
Century come together onstage to share their roles in ending slavery in America and teach
young people the importance of education. This production delves into the childhoods of these
two remarkable figures while recreating the key moments and events that shaped both of their
lives. This show seeks to honor and celebrate the many contributions of these two heroic
Americans.
January 31, 2014 (Friday) Grades K-2, Free - "FARMER JASON FARM & FOREST"
by Loyd Artists (loydartists.com) Students will learn about the animals and plants in the forest and
farm and the effects of our actions on the environment around us all in an atmosphere encouraging
a sense of enjoyment and curiosity about nature. Farmer Jason is an Americana Music Association
Lifetime Achievement Award winner and Emmy Award winning artist. The highly acclaimed live
show involves sing-alongs, dancing and discussions about nature appreciation, ecology and farm
animals. Farmer Jason performs solo with just his acoustic guitar (no backing track gimmickry),
which adds to the spontaneous, high energy nature of his concerts.
February 13, 2014 (Thursday) Grades 2-5, $3/student "HANSEL AND GRETEL" by
Taradiddle Players (www.ctcharlotte.org) It is dinner time and once again the children push around
the food on their plate, complaining and acting rudely. So tonight instead of dinner, Mother tells the
story of Hansel and Gretel. As the familiar tale unfolds - two hungry children lost in the forest
searching for their parents and facing a wicked witch - the family embraces their roles in this play
within a play with a 'happily ever after' ending.
February 5, 2014 (Wednesday) Grades 6-8, $3/student "FOUR SCORE AND SEVEN
YEARS" by Arts Power (www.artspower.org) To young Lemuel, who has escaped slavery in
Georgia, life in Gettysburg is everything he had dreamed it would be. His ideas about the North and
the South, as well as what it means to be a free man, are challenged, however, when he unexpectedly
befriends Jacob, a young Confederate soldier. The two men may be of different races and on different
sides of the Civil War, but they have much to teach each other about bravery and loyalty in Arts
Power's exciting and suspenseful musical.

March 4, 2014 (Tuesday) Grades 4-8, $3/student "WRIGHTS OF
PASSAGE" by EbzB Productions (www.EbzB.org) Originally commissioned by the
North Carolina Association of Educators, this family drama celebrates the first one
hundred years of flight. Speaking the Wrights' own words and dressed in period cos-
tumes, professional actors portray the brothers with enthusiasm and vigor. Wilbur and
Orville Wright construct an abstract replica of the famous flyer while revealing their
biographies and re-living the poetry of their influences, discoveries, failures, achieve-
ments and successes.
March 6, 2014 (Thursday) Grades K-4, $3/student "CREOLE FOR KIDZ and the his-
tory of Zydeco" by Terrance Simien (www.terrancesimien.com)- Terrance Simien brings his
award winning Zydeco band to our stage for an energetic and student engaging performance of fab-
ulous music. Zydeco is the music of the French speaking Creoles of southern Louisiana and offers a
rare glimpse into this unique culture. "...During the performance the connection between the band
and the audience was palpable ...students and teachers were learning new things in an interactive
environment while affirming each other's diversity." - S. Beach, Epiphany Day School.

SPECIAL TEACHER TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES
September 25, 2013 (Wednesday) TEACHER TRAINING WORKSHOP, 3:30-5pm in the Boardroom at the
Education Center. "BEARING WITNESS: RECOVERING LOST VOICES" We will explore "Writing the Hol-
ocaust" as a way to engage students in the material of genocide through personal narrative. The 90-minute
workshop will be broken up into three sections: diaries of the Holocaust and other genocides, memoir and
the literature of memory, and creating student work in response to the literature and history of the Holocaust.
For teachers in grades 6-12.
October 8, 2013 (Tuesday) TEACHER TRAINING WORKSHOP, 3:30-5pm in the Boardroom at the Educa-
tion Center. "BE THE CHANGE: AN ANTI-BULLYING PLAYSHOP" Dr. Gonzalez uses his in-depth experi-
ence with meditation, performance, teaching, and arts therapies in an anti-bullying workshop that incorpo-
rates storytelling, creative writing, mindfulness training, and theatre games. Participants learn compassionate
action practices across the "victim-witness-bully" spectrum. For teachers in grades 2-8.
