Calculating and Calculating and Finding DensityFinding Density
By: Mr. CunninghamBy: Mr. Cunningham
In our Lab today• You will be finding density of
different types of objects.• We must remember Density is
equal to mass divided by volume• D = m/v
Mass• Remember how we find mass?• We use a triple beam balance to
find the mass of our objects.• We will need to find the mass of
an empty vial in order to complete our lab first.
Volume• How doe we find volume? • We use the instrument called a
graduated cylinder.• We will use the method of water
displacement that we did on Tuesday.
Water Displacement• This is where you add water to the
graduated cylinder, to about 10 ml. Called Initial
• Then you place the object in the cylinder and measure that volume. Second measurement
Water Displacement• We Then subtract the original
volume from the second measurement
• 2nd – original = volume of the object.
Density• Now that we have found mass and
volume we can divide and find our density.
