ZIMMERMAN AS A HEAD COACH

ZIMMERMAN AS AN ASSISTANT COACH

Carolyn Zimmerman is entering her fifth full season as the Titan volleyball head coach, continuing to build the Cal State Fullerton program into a viable contender in the always-tough Big West Conference. In just four seasons, Zimmerman has steered the Titans from just five wins in 2002 to back-to-back 14-win seasons in 2004 and 2005. Also, over the past two seasons under her tutelage, the team has recorded the school’s third best single-season win totals and posted the best winning percentage of any two consecutive years in the program’s history. Her 2004 squad tied an eight-year old record, set by the 1995 team, with six wins in Big West Conference play. Zimmerman coached her first, first-team All-Big West player in Vanessa Vella, as well as All-Big West Freshman Brittany Moore in 2005 adding to the list of her former players honored by the conference. The likes of all-conference honorable mentions Kim Levey (2002), Tiffany Dolven (2004) and three-time honoree Lauren Goins (2002-04) all played under Zimmerman’s watch, with Goins moving on to play professionally in Germany in 2005. In four seasons, Coach Zimmerman’s teams have posted three pre-season tournament championships, (two in 2004 and one in 2005) and three second-place finishes (two in 2003 and one in 2005) en route to a 23-14 non-conference record since 2003.

Zimmerman, no stranger to the Titan program prior to inheriting the team, served as the top assistant to former head coach Mary Ellen Murchison for seven seasons (1995-2001). When Murchison retired prior to the 2002 season, Zimmerman was named interim head coach for that season and was then hired on a permanent basis in 2003. Prior to joining the staff at Fullerton, Zimmerman was an assistant at Cal State Northridge in 1994, when the Matadors posted a 23-8 record and captured the NIVC title in post-season play. In 1995, she guided her South Bay 17-U Volleyball club team to a fourth-place finish at the prestigious Nike Volleyball Festival. She was also a varsity assistant and junior varsity head coach at perennial prep powerhouse Mira Costa High School in Manhattan Beach. Zimmerman is a 1992 graduate of Pepperdine, where she was the setter/right-side hitter for four West Coast Conference championship squads. A four-year letter-winner and the Waves’ captain for a season, Zimmerman earned first-team All-WCC honors three times and was named the conference’s Player of the Year and a Volleyball Monthly honorable mention All-American in 1991. She was also a member of the gold-medal winning south team at the Olympic Festival in Los Angeles in 1990. She wrapped up her Pepperdine career as the Waves’ all-time leader in digs with 1,371 and stood third in block assists, fourth in total blocks and service aces, and eighth in kills and total attacks. She also set a Pepperdine single-season record with 383 digs in 1990. Zimmerman is a 1988 graduate of West Torrance High, where she was a three-sport star. In addition to earning Bay League volleyball MVP honors as a senior, she was an All-American in soccer and CIF champion and state qualifier in track and field. She was named West Torrance’s Athlete of the Year in 1987 and 1988. Zimmerman resides in Redondo Beach with her husband, Joe, sons Jimmy and Danny, and daughter Kira.

Former All-American Traci Dahl enters her second season as an

assistant coach with the Titans where she heads up the program’s

recruiting in addition to her regular coaching duties.

The former middle blocker was a prominent member of Long

Beach State’s 1993 national championship women’s volleyball

squad and more recently an assistant coach at Hofstra University

in Hempstead, New York.

Dahl assisted for one season with Hofstra in 2004, where the

Pride went 19-10 and finished second in the Colonial Athletic

Association. Prior to her year in New York, Dahl was a teacher

and coach at Downey High School from 1998-2004 and Cerritos

Community College from 1995-97. While at Downey, the Vikings

produced four undefeated league titles, nine All-CIF players and

four league MVPs.

A 1996 physical education graduate from Long Beach State,

Dahl earned second-team All-Big West Conference honors in

1993 with the 49ers and first-team honors in 1994 when she

also gained second-team All-American status.

Dahl previously played at Cerritos and twice (1991-92) was

selected South Coast Conference Player of the Year. In 1992 she

was California Player of the Year and first-team All-American

and led the Falcons to the state championship. She prepped at

Gahr High School in Cerritos, and won All-San Gabriel Valley

League honors as well as a 1989 CIF championship.

Dahl currently resides in Long Beach, Calif.

Former Titan volleyball player Jennifer Adeva returns to Fullerton

to join Carolyn Zimmerman’s coaching staff after a six-year

absence from Southern California.

Adeva started her collegiate coaching career at Santa Ana

College in 1998 as the assistant coach of the Dons, before

being named head coach a year later. After a season of guiding

the Santa Ana squad, Adeva headed east for assistant jobs at

Nicholls State (2000-2001), Tennessee State (2001-04), and

UNC Charlotte (2004-05).

The former defensive specialist has coached at the club level

including the Carolina Juniors “Slam” team, an 18-year-

old national-level squad that captured the 18-Gold Div.

Championship in the 2006 USA Volleyball Junior Olympics. Her

team posted eight first-place finishes from 2004-05, including

championships at the Asics Nationals in Chicago, the East Coast

Championships at Penn State, and the Asics Big South Qualifier

in Atlanta.

Adeva played in 53 career matches for the Titans from 1994-96,

while receiving a redshirt for the 1995 campaign. She posted 187

career digs and 15 service aces over two seasons. Prior to that

she was a two-time All-Western Conference selection (1992-

93) at College of the Canyons in Valencia, Calif. She prepped

at Canyon High School in Canyon Country, Calif., earning All-

Golden League and All-Santa Clarita Valley honors as a letter

winner for the Cowboys.

A 1997 graduate from Cal State Fullerton, Adeva earned her

bachelor’s degree in kinesiology before going on to obtain a

master’s in education from Azusa Pacific in 1999.

ABOUT THE BIG WEST CONFERENCE

The Big West has established an impeccable pedigree in the sport

of women’s volleyball entering its 23rd season of conference

sponsorship.

SIX national championships. EIGHT national Players of the Year.

Over ONE HUNDRED All-America awards. THREE National Coaches

of the Year. Since 1984, the Big West Conference has enjoyed

unparalleled success in the sport of women’s volleyball and has

positioned itself as the nation’s elite conference.

The Big West has sent a representative to the Final Four in 14 of

its 22 years as a volleyball conference. In 2001, Long Beach State

earned its eighth trip to the Final Four and reached the national

championship match for the fourth time.

The Big West dominated postseason play from 1998-2004

with the conference sending at least four schools to the NCAA

Tournament. The Big West has only sent less than three teams to

the NCAA Tournament once (2005).

UC Santa Barbara is one of only three programs in the entire nation

to have competed in all 25 NCAA Tournaments. In addition, Big

West schools have tallied an impressive 97-55 record (.638) against

non-conference opponents all-time in the NCAA Tournament.

In 1999, the Big West comprised half of the contingent at the Final

Four in Honolulu, Hawai’i with the presence of Long Beach State

and Pacific. It marked the first time since 1994 that two teams

from the same conference competed at the prestigious event.

The alumni who have competed in the Big West reads like a

Who’s Who of volleyball superstars. Long Beach State’s Misty

May, a two-time NCAA Player of the Year, is widely considered

the best collegiate volleyball player ever. She is now known as one

of the world’s top beach players. Long Beach State’s Tara Cross

and Danielle Scott, and Pacific’s Elaina Oden have contributed

greatly to the success of the United States Olympic Team in indoor

volleyball. The conference was represented in the 2004 Olympic

Games in Athens, Greece, by the LBSU trio of Tara Cross, Danielle

Scott and Tayyiba Haneef.

The quality of coaching in the Big West is top notch. Two of the

nation’s all-time winningest coaches are in the Big West – Long

Beach State’s Brian Gimmillaro and UC Santa Barbara’s Kathy

Gregory. Gimmillaro’s .811 career winning percentage ranks sixth

all-time among active coaches, while Gregory is one of seven

coaches in NCAA history to surpass the 700-win career mark.

MESSAGE FROM THE TAC

MESSAGE FROM THE TITANATHLETICS CLUB PRESIDENT

As I start my term as President of the Titan Athletics Club, I

am very excited about the future of Titan Athletics. Key to

that future is our fundraising and volunteer organization, the

Titan Athletics Club.

The Titan Athletics Club directly supports over 400 Cal State

Fullerton student-athletes. Contributions from Cal State

Fullerton fans, alumni and parents provide resources necessary

to meet the budgetary needs of our 17 intercollegiate athletic

programs through scholarships and team support.

Our fans, alumni, and parents have enabled our teams

to consistently compete at the highest levels within the

NCAA. Private support has helped us achieve 12 national

championships, hundreds of individual conference

championships and All-Americans, and numerous professional

athletes and Olympic champions.

As we look to the future of Titan Athletics, we count on our

“team” of alumni, parents and friends to continue to make

us better. By joining us with a gift, or attending any of our

social events, you can help us recruit, coach and educate the

nation’s finest student-athletes.

We look forward to you joining our team, the Titan Athletics

Club.

Go Titans!

Kirk San Roman ’83
