The Cityport Master Plan was developed (CPA) to further protect and develop the marina, and to provide an efficient and effective port facility to service the growing tourist demand at one of Australia’s busiest passen ger ports. Method: The initial Cityport works involved the con struction of wave barr ier and 640 m of new wha rf length to the perimeter of the Marina. Results: CPA obtained facilities that provide: vessel and marina protection from cyclones; a fully integrated trafficable wharf with a wave protection skirt wall that required no additional foundations; skirt wall construction that can be easily maintained and replaced if subject to vessel collision damage; an improved Reef vessel ope rations area; an impr oved waterfront tourist attra ction; ample further berthage to cater for expanding tourist and recreational Reef trips with provision for full servicing; and the initial stages of development of the overall Master Plan expansion for this area. Conclusion: The Marlin Mar ina Redevelopme nt, as part of Citport, as a world class precinct for loca ls and tourists, and for enhancement of the long term viability and operational efficiency of the sea port. _______________ ________________ BACKGROUND Marlin Marina in Cairns provides berthing facilities for luxury private yachts and serves as the terminus for tour vessels operating day trips to the Great Barrier Reef and islands off the north-east coast of Queensland. The marina is also an important commercial hub for Cairns, a nd is incorpora ted into the Cityport Developmen t plan for the Cairns waterfront currently being finalized. On 22 Marc h, 1997 , Cyclon e Justi n caus ed exte nsive d ama ge to the exi sting Ma rlin Ma rina. (Ref er Figure 1). The extent of damage wa s such that complete re-co nstruction of the Marina was required. GHD used information from Cyclone Justin and other available record s to study the currents and waves generated, and to define the design conditions for the Marina after rec onstruction (Ref 1).Design and Construc t tenders were subsequently called for the provision of marina pontoons and piles. On the basis of the research information which was available, GHD recommended to the Cairns Port Authority that, rather than pontoons which would also act as floating breakwaters, an independent wave protection system be installed to ensure the integrity of the marina pontoons. The development of the wave protection system is detailed hereafter . 1726
