CADTH Seminar The Use of Health Economics in Decision Making: Theory and Practice Faced with rising health care costs, decision makers (government, administrators and health care professionals) grapple with the challenge of ensuring quality care while getting the best value from every health care dollar. What is the role of health economics in balancing health care costs and access to care? What is the impact of ignoring costs? How do decision makers use economic information? Are there shortcomings to current accepted practices? Are there better ways to develop and use economic information? Join Dr. Karl Claxton, Dr. Murray Krahn, and Dr. Robert Peterson for a thought provoking session on the value and reality behind the use of economic information in decision making. Faculty Dr. Karl Claxton, co-editor of the Journal of Health Economics, is a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre for Health Economics, University of York, UK. He is a member of the National Decision Support Unit and continues to contribute to the development of guidance for the appraisal of health technologies for NICE. Dr. Murray Krahn, the Director of the Toronto Health Economics and Technology Assessment (THETA) collaborative, is also the F. Norman Hughes Chair in Pharmacoeconomics; Social and Administrative Pharmacy Division Head and Professor at the University of Toronto; Scientist (Toronto General Research Institute); Adjunct Scientist (Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences) and an attending physician at the University Health Network. Dr. Robert Peterson is the Chair of CADTH’s Canadian Expert Drug Advisory Committee (CEDAC). He is a pediatrician, clinical pharmacologist, and medical toxicologist, and is a Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics, University of British Columbia. He is Chair of the Regulations Advisory Board of the Centre for Medicines Research, International. Date: March 17, 2009, 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Location: Canadian Agency for Drugs and Technologies in Health; 2nd Floor Council Chambers, 865 Carling Avenue, Ottawa, Ontario Space is limited and registration is required.
