A CAD dataset contains feature classes and a CAD drawing dataset:

text, tags, and attribute definitions

polygons and is useful for 3D representation

drawing dataset represents the entire CAD file as a single layerpoints, blocks, and cells

lines, polylines, and arcs

closed areas such as polygons, ellipses, and circles

Projection files define a coordinate system for a CAD dataset. They are recommended but not required.
