cityscapeHackney streets slowly wake from their slumber as I coast past late night revelers returning to their homes to sleep off the night’s folly. The chill is still in the air as the early sun creeps up. Leaving the cobbled streets of Shoreditch behind, I speed towards a deserted City.

No stopping as I pick up pace, my legs starting to come alive as the early morning espresso seeps into my system.

Through the Square Mile and heading out west, I ignore the office as the golden Sunday light reflects off the Thames.

cardioLegs pumping, out of the saddle as I reach the top of Sawyers Hill, I take a moment to glance over my shoulder at a still dormant London

Through Richmond, I follow the river as it snakes towards Hampton Court, stopping briefly at Sigma Sport for essential supplies and a misty eyed glance at some lovely machines.

Leith Hill, Whitedown, Boxhill and then a final effort up Chapel, enough climbing as I spin towards Esher, images of Surrey lanes and bluebell woods still fresh in my mind.

The heavenly aroma of coffee awaits me at Giro Cycles. After sharing a few stories of the day I reluctantly ease back into the saddle and slog my way back to the Smoke.

Salt encrusted and weary I climb the steps to my flat. With the bike neatly back on it’s Cactus Tongue, I crash back on the bed, exhausted but invigorated.


My Dad had bought me the Raleigh when I was a kid, my dream bike, to replace the bike that had been stolen just weeks before. My mates and I were off on a cycling adventure – to cycle to the West Country over the summer after finishing school.

When I started working in London the Raleigh was my trusty way of getting about, commuter, pub bike and even the odd London to Brighton.

Decades later it sat unused, in the way, corroded and in a sorry state.

Eroica Britannia 2015 was the catalyst I needed to start a restoration that my Dad would have been proud of and would be a joy to ride and look at.

Dismantling, polishing and sourcing old components that I had discarded as a kid, I cold-set the frame and took hours deliberating over the colour. Finally I stitched on the leather bar tape and treated the bike to a new Brookes Swallow to set it all off.

It was a joy to restore and it’s just as good to ride as when I picked it up from the bike shop back in 1983, perhaps better!
