A BRIEF HISTORY

In 1987, Lee Brown, President of CadillacChamber of Commerce, and Chamber BoardMember Peter Barry discussed the possibility ocreating a Community Foundation in CadillacLee brought in Dottie Johnson, the Director othe Council of Michigan Foundations at the timeto talk with the Chamber and other interestedparties.

In 1988, the Board of the Cadillac AreaCommunity Foundation was formed consistingof Lee Brown, Fred Sprague, Ron Swanson, JohnBishop, Clayton Jesweak, Eleanor Peterson andPeter Barry. They filed with the State of Michiganfor the license and the IRS for a 501c-3 Status.

Now established, in 1989a founding donationof $500,000 was received from Peter Barry, PauTaylor, Jim Frisbie, and John Raffaele.

Today the Cadillac Area CommunityFoundation is a local, tax-exempt, independentpublicly supported philanthropic organizationthat is organized and operated as a permanencollection of endowed funds for the long-termbenefit of the Cadillac Area.

Since its beginnings in 1988, the Foundation haawarded over $3.9 Millionto the Cadillac Area inthe form of grants to non-profit organizations, andscholarships to deserving students.

Mission Statement

The primary mission of the Cadillac Area Community Foundation is to develop acommunity-wide vehicle for permanent endowments to enhance the quality of life in the and to establish and manage worthwhile endowed funds for the benet of our community

What is community? It is more than mere proximity. Simply living or working near others does notmake a community. Community requires energy, continuity and a willingness to pull together arounda common cause. Residents in a real community understand that they are linked, both positively andnegatively, with others in their community.

It is out of such a definition of community that the Cadillac Area Community Foundation (CACF)got its start. Its primary mission, To develop a community-wide vehicle for permanent endowmentsto enhance the quality of life in the area and to establish and manage worthwhile endowed fundsfor the benefit of our community, can be simply stated as using community gifts to help others in thecommunity, long term. That is what the CACF has done for years and continues to do today.

Over the past year, the CACF has celebrated twenty-five years of honoring and celebrating philanthropyin our community. This incredible legacy of giving has allowed the CACF to invest nearly four milliondollars in our community. It has also offered donors an opportunity to realize their dreams for a better

community and to give back in a way that they may not even have imagined.In order to continue this legacy for the next twenty-five, fifty or a hundred years, a new generation

of philanthropist must be taught the importance of community. The Youth Advisory Council involveslocal youth to do just that. Teaching the importance of giving as well as the real, urgent needs of ourcommunity as a whole gives these students a bigger perspective on what community really means.

Now in our twenty-sixth year, we hope that this is simply the beginning for the CACF. As long as there iscommunity, there will be a need for the CACF and what it provides. Please consider what you are doingfor your community, for today and for the future.

Clay BlanchardSCHOLARSHIP FUND

Clay Blanchard truly enjoyed Cadillac. Born and raised inCadillac, a graduate of Cadillac High School. He married his wifeSheryl in Cadillac, and together they raised their sons, Sam andAndy, in the area that they so loved. As their family grew up, theyspent their time enjoying all of the wonderful outdoor opportunitiesthat the area has to offer. Clay Blanchard loved this community,and it was with great sadness that the community met the news ofhis unexpected death in 2012.

Shortly before his death, Clay had a casual conversation

with his son Sam, a pediatric dentist. They recalled how Samhad received financial assistance with his education through ascholarship awarded through the Ardis-Lueder U of M DentistrySchool Scholarship, a scholarship fund held by the Cadillac AreaCommunity Foundation. At the time, Clay expressed his desire tobe able to give something back to the community through a similarmeans. Based on that conversation, the family of Clay Blanchardhas established the Clay Blanchard Viking Citizenship ScholarshipFund. This scholarship is awarded to a Cadillac High School Seniorwho has exhibited a sense of social responsibility by their actionsand attitude throughout their four years of high school. David A. CookMEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP FUND

FOR CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

This Scholarship Fund was established within the Cadillac Area CommunityFoundation in 2013 by Daves wife, Dorcas Dori Cook, to honor the man shedearly loved. Dave lived every moment of his life to the fullest, and made apoint to tell and show his love to those he cherished. He took pride in beinggreat at his job and in providing for his family. Dave also knew how to have fun.

Dave graduated from Michigan State University in 1975 with a degree inMechanical Engineering. He was a devoted Spartan and was extremely proudof his alma mater. Over the course of his life he became passionate about theenvironment and pushed for green energy and construction.

It is in the light of his love for the environment that his wife, Dori, createda scholarship fund at the Foundation to reflect Daves interests; the David ACook Memorial Scholarship Fund for Civil and Environmental Engineering atMichigan State University. It is her way of creating a legacy for Dave, andsharing his vision for the future.

component fund of the Cadillac Area Community Foundation. But

what does this mean?

It means that the MACF operates as a community foundation buttakes advantage of the technical services and guidance of theCadillac Area Community Foundation. Donations to the MACF areassigned to their endowed fund that benefits Missaukee County. Youth Advisory Committee

Established to address the needs and concerns of Missaukee County youth, the MACF YouthAdvisory Committee administered a Youth Needs Assessment Survey to the Lake City High SchoolSophomore students in 2013. The purpose of the survey was to obtain information from the youthpopulation regarding issues facing young students today, as well as to obtain information aboutneeded supplemental programs that students felt would benefit them and the community, if offered.

The completed results offer insights into interests and concerns of Missaukee County youth.

The top three activities that would be supported by youth if available were:After-school sport programs; Art, music and fitness supplemental activities; Job preparationand student leadership activities

The top three (3) issues facing young people in the community today:Stress; Alcohol and drug abuse; Teen sexuality issues

The three (3) areas that students highlighted as a concern for the majority of students:Racial tension; Drug and alcohol abuse; Teen stress

The results of the survey are being used to help in future decision making by the Youth AdvisoryCommittee when recommending youth grants.

A SAMPLING OF OUR2013 GRANTMAKING

The Free Food Pantry came into being as a way to asCommunity members who were facing economic haship that limited their ability to obtain food for their familNow in its 5th year, the pantry provides up to 50 lbs of frefood for 200 families twice monthly. Thanks to the generoof T. J.s Trucking, the Pantry has a fixed location at 908 6

Street. Because of the continuing collaboration between the Cadillac Area Commnity Foundation, the Rotary Club of Cadillac, and our generous community donowe can continue to offer this program. We are currently seeking interested donsponsors for 2015. Interested donors may contact the Foundation at 231-775-9911arrange sponsorship.

Additionally, the Foundation awarded a grant from the Cornerstone Fund to as

with the purchase of a new truck which will enable Feeding America to keep up wthe demand in our community.

Camp Torenta Snags A Dock

When Dave Foley approached the Foundation as a representativthe Cadillac Area YMCA, he had a specific vision in mind for CTorenta. The Camp, located on the shores of Lake Mitchell, needfishing dock. The lake bed in the area has quite a bit of stones, wand other debris that makes it great for pan fish, but not so greabare feet. Add to that the cold lake temperature, and the low hantree branches that are just right for snagging a good cast, and have an area that is really difficult to fish for children and adults.Foundation Board of Trustees and the Foundation Youth Commboth awarded grants for the Camp Torenta dock.

Statue Exhibit Decorates The Town

Due to the overwhelming success of the 2012 exhibition ofthe J. Seward Johnson Sculpture Exhibit, the Friends of TheCadillac Wexford Library (FOL) thought that Cadillac residents

may enjoy a 2nd Summer of Fun for 2013. Willing financialpartners for the project were found, including the Lakin/WeeksFund for the Humanities, a field of interest fund held by theCadillac Area Community Foundation.

Cadillac Honor Guard Receives Uniform

Not many people are aware that the soldiers you see at funeralsones who play taps, offer a gun salute, and provide the flags andboxes to the families of veterans, are all part of the Honor Guard. Cadillac Honor Guard has close to 50 members who representveterans in our community and participate in such activities as funeparades, and other activities that raise awareness. Most of what do is at their own expense, and they have been doing this for ywithout any uniforms. In conjunction with the Cadillac VFW, the CadHonor Guard applied for, and received, a grant in the amount of $9They had to raise the remaining $18,000 which they did. We think

look great in their new uniforms!

Local Program HelpsLearning Disabled Students

The Missaukee Area Community Foundation, a componentFund of the Cadillac Area Community Foundation, awardeda grant to Northern Michigan Christian School in support of theArrowsmith Program. This computer based program is based onthe brains ability to change and overcome learning disabilities.

BELLS ARE RINGING IN CADILLAC

Just when she thought her vision might be complete, Kathy Simfound the finishing component. Last summer Kathy, Treasurer ofCadillac Area Garden Club, and her husband were visiting Art Pin Grand Rapids when she was inspired by an interactive mussculpture that she saw there. The unique sculpture, createdMichigan artist Tom Kaufmann, utilizes recycled industrial oxytanks and scrap metals. Through the use of his creative art

Mr. Kaufmann turns these materials into a flower garden of souKathy knew that the Sound Garden would be the perfect homethis interactive, musical sculpture, and so she took her idea toCity of Cadillac.

The City agreed that the sculpture was perfect for the area. collaboration that began with the Sound Garden area upgraover the last two years between the Garden Club and the was extended. The City of Cadillac applied to the Foundationa grant, and it was approved. We are happy to be partners these organizations, and Kathy, on this project. The artist is creaa specialty piece just for Cadillac, which can now be viewed played in the Sound Garden area.

Youth Advisory Committee

This survey would not have been possible without the hard work of the Survey Committee and their Advisor. Wewould like to recognize and thank the Committee Co-Chairpersons (Molly Mackey and Paige Fiet); the Survey Comittee Members (Savana Holmes, Kate Buckmaster, Erin Bosman, Pallas Schuster, Katelyn Erickson); and the SurveyCommittee Adult Advisor (Jennifer Mitchell). Well done!

Established in 1990, the Youth Advisory Committee addresses the needs and concerns of youth within

our Community. The committee of student volunteers meets monthly throughout the year.

Every three years the Youth Advisory Committee conducts a survey of Cadillac students in grades5-12 to determine what types of programs and projects can best serve area youth. These are someof the results of the 2013 survey. You may view the entire survey results report on our website at www.cadillacfoundation.org.

CADILLAC & KELLOGG FOR YOUTH

YOUTH ADVISORY COMMITTEEEstablished in 1990, the Cadillac and Kellogg for Youth Committee (YAC) is an advisory committee to

the Cadillac Area Community Foundation Board of Trustees.

The Youth Advisory Committee is comprised of Cadillac area youth, grades 8 12, who representthe geographic, socio-economic, ethnic and educational differences within the community. Adultadvisors and the Executive Director of the Foundation also assist the youth as needed.

The purpose of the YAC is to train young people in decision-making skills, to provide a forum for youthinterests and needs, to participate in grant-making for youth projects and programs in the CAPS servicearea, and to involve youth in both volunteerismand philanthropy.

As of September 30, 2013, the Youth Fund had a balance of over $1.2 Million.

Mrs. Myers works with CAPS studentsat the YMCA after school program

which was partially funded by agrant from the Youth Fund.

The Youth Committee shared their Holidayparty and meal with the residents of the

Green Acres Retirement Home.
