CUESTA COLLEGE / CREATE Electronics And Computer Technology Dept. Network Cabling Pulling Facility Design Introduction This document includes detailed design plans for a network cable pulling facility to fit with-in an enclosed lab space. The design provides maximum flexibility while minimizing lab space. Also included in this document, are plans for a portable network cable pulling trainer that can be implemented in case the larger cable pulling structures cannot be accommodated. Both the larger fixed structures and the portable cable pulling trainers have been built and fully tested in classroom environments. The fixed cabling structures are the primary cable pulling training mode used in the classes taught at Cuesta College, and have been tested over a period of three semesters with up to 20 students per section. The portable cable pulling trainers were designed by Cuesta College and Beta tested at Coast Guard Island in Alameda with 18 coast guard personnel. The training provided using either the fixed or portable cable trainers is based on the BICSI Level 1 cabling certification program. The coursework and lab materials support the requirements of the certification testing. The portable trainer was used in a compressed version of the full semester course taught at Cuesta College. The training was provided for the Electronics Support Unit in Alameda California by Chris Akelian; who is also a reservist. The Coast Guard training was modeled after BICSI Level 1 certification course; therefore, was taught in five 8 hour sections during one 40 hour week. The idea behind beta testing the short course for the Coast Guard was to determine the viability of matching the semester course content with-in a short course environment. This mode of training more effectively meets the needs of industry and summer training courses for high school and college instructors, and is method of future delivery for a CREATE sponsored summer cabling training course. It is important to note that the Coast Guard training was not a CREATE sponsored event, and did not receive any funding for equipment or instructor time; however, the resulting work performed by the CREATE member will be used in future CREATE sponsored events. And the design of the portable trainer will be shared through the CREATE/NSF grant.

Fixed Cable Pulling Structures The fixed cable pulling structures designed and used at Cuesta College, are based on actual building design parameters. That is, the facility is an actual small building within a larger building (the lab). It is broken into two parts: an Entrance facility which is just a wall panel with hardware that accompanies the cable entrance into a building; and a small building that incorporates two simulated telecommunications rooms (TR) with associated hardware and 16 wall outlets. The entrance facility and telecommunication rooms are separated structures that are linked together with backbone conduit. The telecommunications rooms distribute cables to work area outlets also with conduit. The entrance facility is constructed of two plywood panels mounted to and existing wall. The small building structure is built using standard construction materials including a 2 by 4 wood frame, and a dry wall interior with a plywood exterior. Wall outlets are mounted on both the interior and exterior walls for maximum space utilization. Detailed plans of the small building structure are shown in figures 1 through 4. There are a total of 14 labs that support the cabling course and currently eight of the labs are based on the training structures as shown below: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Rack Configuration Grounding and Bonding Network Interface Device termination Backbone cabling pulling and termination Horizontal cabling pulling and termination Installing surface mounted raceway Installing utility column raceway Backboard design

Other lab topics include Basic Terminations, Cross connecting blocks, cable bundling, and Firestopping.

Portable Cable Pulling And Termination Trainer The portable cable trainers provide much of the lab work and training concepts taught with the fixed structures using a minimum of space utilization. Each trainer is designed to effectively handle up to 8 students performing lab experiments on it at one time. There are a total of 11 labs that support the reduced time frame cabling course andcurrently four of the labs are based on the portable training structure as shown below: 1. 2. 3. 4.
