EASTERN KENTUCKY UNIVERSITY Serving Kentuckians Since 1906

May 4, 2012 From: Jerry Pogatshnik, Associate Vice President for Research and Dean of the Graduate School Re: Item for Faculty Senate Consideration The Graduate School requests consideration of proposed changes to the Second Master’s Degree Requirements policy as published in the Graduate Catalog. Changes to Graduate Catalog description for Second Master’s Degree Requirements The current catalog description has been confusing and also may be inconsistent with SACS criteria for transfer of credit. The new description is consistent with the Graduate Transfer Policy that was approved previously this year. The revised policy also clarifies when students may apply for and enroll in a second master’s degree program. The requested changes were reviewed and approved by the Graduate Council at its March meeting. Requested Changes are listed in Attachment 1.

CAA 25

2

Attachment 1 Second Master’s Degree Requirements Students desiring to pursue a second master’s degree at Eastern Kentucky University shall have completed all requirements for the first master’s degree at Eastern Kentucky University or another accredited university. In general, the same basic requirements for general admission, admission to candidacy, and other conditions previously stated in this Catalog relative to the first master’s degree are also applicable to the second degree with the following exceptions: A maximum of fifty percent of the required credit hours for the second master’s degree may be applied from the first degree if such courses are within the seven year time limit, are appropriate for the second program, and are approved by the program. Candidates Graduate students seeking for a second master’s degree must file an application for admission to Graduate School for the new degree program. A student may apply for admission to a second graduate program and identify their second program prior to registration for additional course work. A student may apply for admission to a second degree program any time after they have applied for graduation in their first program. Students are eligible for admission to a second degree program after they have been certified for completion of the first degree program by the Graduate School. Students may not register for coursework in the second degree program until they have been admitted to that program by the Graduate School. Students should be admitted to the second master’s program with an approved Planned Program prior to any additional registration. Individual programs have specific requirements which must be met before pursuing a second master’s degree. Normally, any deficiencies in preparation for a second master’s degree must be resolved during the first enrollment. Coursework taken in a prior graduate program may be applicable to a second master’s degree. The maximum number of hours that can be used in a second program is subject to the limits set forth in the Graduate School’s policy on transfer of credit. Prior coursework used toward a second degree must fall within the time-to-degree limits and must be approved by the faculty advisor, graduate program coordinator and/or department chair, and the Dean of the Graduate School.
