PARISH NEWS & EVENTS STEWARDSHIP Stewardship Reflec on.

.“No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and

despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon (material wealth).” MATTHEW 6:24

For many people, God and money run “neck and neck” as their first priority. Making money and spending money becomes the center of their life and they actually become a slave to money. The solu on – become more generous. Giving money to Church and charity frees us from slavery to money and from making money a “god” before God.

Lenten Regulations Abstinence from meat is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age, but not yet 59.

Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted, if necessary, to maintain strength according to one‘s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast, as well as abstinence, are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday.

A sh Wednesday is a special day of devo on for Catholics. Churches are packed like no other day except Christmas and Easter. Even though the Church does not designate Ash Wednesday as a holy day of obliga on, Catholics

flock to receive ashes. Along with this outward sign of the begin-ning of a season of penitence, we embrace the call to conversion that Ash Wednesday heralds. Chris an stewards will greet Lent with the best of inten ons. But some mes, we reach Easter disap-pointed in our own efforts. Here are some sugges ons for keeping us on task during this Lenten season: • Plan ahead. Give thought and prayer to what will most help you

draw closer to Jesus during this special season. Write your inten-ons down, and review them o en.

• Keep it simple. Like those folks who sign up for gym member-ships on January 1 and give up by January 15. Some mes we approach Lent with too many resolu ons. Be realis c and don’t set yourself up for guilt.

• Prayer, fas ng and almsgiving are the pillars of Lent. Try to do one thing in each of these categories. Stretch yourself a bit and come up with something new and challenging.

• Keep your eyes on Jesus. Coming closer to him through his Pas-sion and Resurrec on is our goal.

• Prepare your home with Lenten reminders. If you have no cruci-fix in your living areas, place one there. If you have a crucifix, perhaps affix a spot of purple to it as a reminder of Lent. Find a special picture or holy card that speaks to you and display it.

• Place a special candle on the dining room table, and when your family says grace each evening, encourage them to share the struggles and joys of their Lenten reso-lu ons, or perhaps an act of kindness they did that day. This is a good ac vity for kids.

• Take your family to the Sta ons of the Cross at least once.

• Receive the Sacrament of Reconcilia on and encourage your family to do so.

• Make it a point to prepare for and par cipate in the beau ful Triduum liturgies of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and even the Easter Vigil. Celebrate the comple on of your Lenten exercises. A er Easter, reflect on your Len-ten prac ces. Remember, God’s mercy to us is unlimited. It’s not all about what “we” did, but what God does with-in us. Interna onal Stewardship Council.org

Religious Education News Prac cing God's Mercy During Tuesday evening religious educa on classes children in the Level 1 thru 8 programs were given "rice bowls" to fill with their loose change as part of their Lenten prepara on for the joyous feast of Easter. The children were encouraged as members of the family of Our Lady of Hope to join the adults of the parish in this community project. This provides them the opportunity to experience global solidarity though prayer, fas ng, learning and giving to change the lives of their brothers and sisters in need. In future classes the children will learn more about the families they are helping, the countries in which they live and how their needs and lives are different and some mes the same (food, clothing, shelter) as theirs. The resources of our country are not always available to them. We encourage you to commit as a family to this service project. To learn more about this project go to www.crsricebowl.org Religious Educa on Classes Levels 1 to 8 religious educa on classes will not meet this coming Tuesday, February 27th. Classes will resume the following Tuesday, March 7 with a Family Mass at 6:30 pm in the church. It is o en said that "The family that prays together stays together." We invite you, since you will already be here dropping your children off, to join them in the celebra on of the Eucharist. This will set an example for them regarding the importance of religion in their lives, more than any sermon you may give. Children learn best by example. There will also be classes in March on the 14th and the 21st. The March 21 class will include a reconcilia on service.

Altar Servers Needed Students in grades 3 and older: do you want to take part in the mass on Saturdays and Sundays? Now is the me to sign up to be an altar server. You will get to learn more about the faith, and see mass from a different perspec ve. Contact our Pastoral Associate, Tina Norton, tnorton@ourladyo opechurch.com or call 847-825-4673 ext. 13, for more informa on.

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING February 28 at 7:00 p.m.

Ministry Center

All are welcome to attend

Prayer Before Meals One of the most natural mes to pray, is as we sit down to eat. We can begin, or "break the ice," by simply saying, Let's pray or Let's just pause for a minute to give thanks. One of the challenges of doing this prayer well is that we don't want our food to get cold. This leads us to do the prayer quickly. Brief prayer doesn't have to be without substance or power. And, it doesn't always have to be a er the food is on the table. For a change of pa ern, we could gather everyone to the table for prayer, and then bring the food to the table.

Our Food Pantry Thanks to your con nued generosity to our food pantry. Based on our current status, items such as peanut bu er, cereal, rice, diced tomatoes, pork & beans, baked beans and canned chicken would help round out our supplies. The Food Pantry is available to our parishioners and friends and neighboring towns. The pantry is open the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month between 9:30 & 11:30 a.m. . Appointments can be made with the parish office if there is an emergency situa on. Thank you for your con nued generosity!!

Concerns During the Cold and Flu Season The Office for Divine Worship has received telephone calls and inquiries regarding the Sign of Peace and Holy Communion from the Cup during this current season when so many people are suscep ble to the common cold or flu.

During this me, it is important to remember common sense. While there are no plans at this point to make provisions for the suspension of either of these elements (i.e, the sign of peace or Holy Communion from the Cup) from the celebra on of the Eucharist, everyone should exercise prudence. The General Instruc on of the Roman Missal does not mandate a par cular gesture to use in the Rite of Peace. The customary gesture is to extend a hand to those near. However, if one is ill with the cold or the flu, or if one feels the need, another gesture is perfectly acceptable. For example, a nod of the head and a smile could accompany the verbal sharing of Christ’s peace.

In regard to Holy Communion from the Cup, communicants should always act responsibly. If one is ill he or she should refrain from taking Holy Communion from the Cup. Pastors and parish leadership should not at this me suspend offering the Precious Blood because of this season of colds and flu. However, all liturgical ministers should be sure to prac ce good hygiene, making sure to wash their hands, or to use a hand sani zer, in prepara on for ministering Holy Communion.

Uncle Pete’s Sandwich Ministry

It’s almost Sandwich Ministry time again! Lunch bags will be distributed next weekend, March 4/5 and collected on March 11/12. Thank you for your continued support and feeding the homeless!

NOTEable In these final days of Ordinary Time before the season of Lent is upon us, I just wanted to men on some upcoming choral opportuni es. The Fes val Choir will be gathering again for the Triduum. The group will rehearse twice on April 5 and April 12 at 7 p.m. and sing for liturgies on Holy Thursday through Easter Sunday. All parishioners and friends are welcome to join the fun! The Children's Choir, which has been gathering before RE sessions will branch out to Sundays, right a er the 11 a.m. Mass on April 2 and April 9. The group will sing Easter Sunday morning at the 11 a.m. Mass. As men oned at liturgies last weekend, we will be singing a new Memorial Acclama on se ng (#214, "Memorial Acclama on C") from Mass of Joy and Peace by Tony Alonso. As you know, there are three op ons of text to the priest's invoca on: "The mystery of faith." Currently, we've only been singing the second op on with all of the Mass se ngs we use. By adding another op on, we become a li le more flexible in our worship, and maybe a li le more sensi ve to the season at hand. Thanks - peace! Colleen
