For over 15 years Grandi Liutai Italiani have perfected the art of choosing, cutting and seasoning wood, in particular the maple from Bosnia. The work and suggestions of many violinists have modified the production with a completely innovative approach to the bridges. Passion in work and strict quality control procedures in GLI have led to the creation of bridges that are highly appreciated
by restorers and professional violin makers. The GLI bridges have precise cut, harmonious curves and the thicknesses of the top and feet are generously proportioned to give maximum freedom. The bridge is a combination of different elements that contribute to create a perfect transmission of the sound from the strings to the violin. All good violin makers know how to cut the shape of the bridge to em-phasize the quality of the instruments, but also it can work perfectly only if the wood is very hard. We have noticed that by increasing the rigidity with our personal treatment, the carved parts should only be applied to reduce weight. For this reason we decided to treat wood to increase its strength and density and let the luthier create his ideal lines more freely.

The mold of the violin is always the starting point for the construction of a professional instrument, and in many cases each violin maker creates its own using as a model the lines of the best violins of the past by adapting it to their own needs of measures and shape.
In 2006 we created with the help of some technicians of Cremona the first symmetrical mould inspired by one of the most renowned Stradivarius: the Messiah of 1716; we revised the original lines, and, keeping the relative dimensions, we have created a symmetrical pattern and ideal for creating a mould of a violin box measuring 35.5 cm.
We subsequently redesigned the sound holes adapting them to the arching, the scroll model redesigned to follow the modern size, and models of the archings of top and back, even those different from the original to meet the taste of the modern luthiers .
For the form we chose to use sheets of 15 mm plywood of high quality birch with phenolic glue to withstand moisture; inside the form we designed some holes that allow to use many clamps to follow the profile of the ribs and to keep the track of the centerline. In this new version of the form we also cut the housings for all blocks.
For the models of the back, scroll and blocks, as for that of the archings, we used a highly resistant (100%) black rigid laminated material Made in Italy that guarantees a long duration even using them frequently.

This Transparent Animal Hide Glue has been used for centuries, and good, strong, centuries-old glue joints are still in existence. The newer liquid hide glues with preservatives do not develop the strength of granular hide glues, and can fail with extended periods of high humidity. This hide glue can be used in well-made, tight joints because it requires only a thin coating, where other glue types require a thick coating.
Since it is extremely transparent it can be used as a pore filler before oil or spirit varnishes (as do many of the Cremonese violin-makers); and it sands easily.

M A S T I C R E S I N Chios Mastic Gum is a natural resin that comes out spontaneously or by engraving from the “Pistachia Lentiscus” that grows on the island of Chios in Greece. The Chios Mastic Gum comes in the form of rounded tears, light yellow, bright and transparent.
It is soluble in alcohol and essence of turpentine.
In varnishes it is extremely transparent, brilliant and non-yellowing. Due to its qualities of transparency and brilliance, Chios Mastic Gum is frequently used by Luthiers in the preparation of the highest quality Oil and Spirit varnishes.

It produces a stunning deep reddish mahogany looking tone on most lighter woods. It is highly desirable for preparation of modern varnishes and antique restorations. It is a very popular shade for a warm looking general finish on light to medium woods. It will produce one of the most beautiful finishes in violinmaking. Our Ruby shellac is also dewaxed. This provides the advantage of being fully compatible with most of other natural resins. It has a wonderful clarity and depth of shine.

The counterform “La Stabile” is a classic of our production. Born over 20 years ago from an idea of a Cremonese luthier, it was then redesigned and implemented over time following the many tips of the luthiers who use it. The basic idea of this simple design is to keep the top or back of the violin tightly in the stops, without damaging the profile. Starting from this concept we have created a mechanics that pushes on the edges diagonally, and not sideways (like all other counterforms in the market) where the grain of the wood is fragile.
Solid Finnish birch plywood and other simple but high-quality materials are ideal to ensure that this indispensable instrument remains strong and stable over decades, especially for luthiers who use it daily.
