C500 Compactor Operation and Maintenance Manual

    3

With just a little preventive maintenance and regular cleaning, we are sure your C500 compactor will provide many years of trouble-free operation.

Please read this manual carefully before installing or servicing the equipment.

    OVERVIEW AND SAFETY FEATURES

The C500 compactor can save thousands of dollars over its life by reducing trash hauling expenses, cardboard recycling costs and labor. It can reduce the volume of solid waste and cardboard by as much as 90%.

The compactor consists of a powerful hydraulic pump coupled to a 2.5” diameter cylinder that generates more than 10,500 lbs of compaction force.

When configured as a waste compactor, the C500 utilizes a high capacity waste bin and durable, puncture resistant bag. The large waste loading door easily accommodates large bags of bulky trash. With the waste door closed, a single button initiates the compaction cycle.

This equipment has built-in safety features to protect you and your employees. Each door is equipped with a safety switch that prevents compaction if any of the doors are open.

SET UPUnpackingRefer to the included document #100365 Set-Up Guide for unpackaging instructions.

Selecting the LocationThe correct location of the compactor will make it more useful as well as easier to operate and service.

    • Make sure there is a 110 volt, 20 amp circuit available and within electrical cord distance—DO NOT USE AN EXTENSION CORD.

    • Make sure there is enough clearance to remove the waste bin or cardboard bale when the main door is completely open.

Installing the Unit1. Remove the packing materials from the unit. Inspect for any damage that may have been missed

when the unit was delivered and report it to Radia Products™ customer service. Each Compactor comes with the following:

    • One (1) Roll of 50 specially designed compactor bags• One (1) Compactor bag hanging rod for inside of the machine• Two (2) Wheel chocks• One (1) Waste bin• Two (2) Rolls of twine for cardboard baling

    2. To set up the unit, open the main door by turning the knob counterclockwise.

    3. Open the cabinet and find two rubber wheel chocks (the chock is a donut shaped piece of rubber that can open up). Place one wheel chock around each front caster wheel to keep the unit in place.

    4. Slide the bag roll over the hanging rod and set it in place in the brackets inside the top compactor door.

    5. Set the rolls of twine upright in the round holders at the back of the compactor, inside the top door. 6. Remove one of the compactor bags from the roll and insert it into the waste bin according to the

    instructions below.

Installing the Compactor Bag1. Pull the waste bin from the unit using the attached handles.2. Remove a single bag from the roll and place it in the bin.3. Fold the excess over the outside edge of the bin and then fold it back up to form a cuff. This will

help prevent liquids from flowing over the bag during the compaction cycle.4. Place the elastic cord over the bag and under the notches located on each corner of the bin as

shown in the photo to the right.5. Lift and push the bin completely into the unit.6. Close the door and tighten the knob to secure.CAUTION: Do Not Over-Tighten Knob.

Powering Up the UnitThe electrical cord is located on the back of the unit. Plug the cord into a grounded power outlet. Note: The standard compactor is wired to operate on 110 volts/20 amps, single phaseelectrical power.

Functions of the switches• The green Start button runs a full compaction cycle. When the

machine detects that the waste bin is full, the Start button will light up. Follow the instructions on the next page to empty the waste bin.

    • The Up button retracts the compaction plate to the top home position if compaction is interrupted.

    • The red E-Stop button will interrupt compaction immediately if pushed in. It can also function as a power switch. Once pressed in, the included key is needed to disengage the E-Stop and restore power.

Emptying the Unit - With the TC50 Transport Cart1. Open the main door of the compactor.2. Place the TC50 cart in front of the waste bin.3. Pull waste bin up on to the TC50 cart.4. Remove the elastic cord and bring the sides of the bag up and secure with a twist tie (not provided)

or by tying a knot.5. Wheel bin to dumpster before raising the cart.6. Raise the bin by turning the crank handle clockwise.7. When the bin is at the top, connect the chain through the ring on the waste cart.8. Lower the bin by turning the crank handle counterclockwise until the waste bin tilts and dumps

waste in the dumpster.9. Raise the bin, detach the chain, lower the bin and return to the compactor.

Emptying the Unit - Without the Optional TC50 Transport Cart1. Open the main door of the compactor.2. Pull the waste bin from the unit.3. Remove the elastic cord and bring the sides of the bag up and secure with a twist tie (not provided)

or by tying a knot.4. If desired, use the bin to transport the bagged waste to the dumpster.5. Remove the bag and dispose of the waste.6. When the bin has been emptied, install a new bag in the bin and place it back in the compactor.

    MAINTENANCE AND SERVICE

*To check the fluid level, the compaction plate must be all the way up. Hydraulic fluid should be 2/3 the way up the sides of the see through tank.

Cleaning the Compaction Plate WARNING: From time to time, trash may become lodged on top of the compaction plate. This may cause the unit to malfunction unless it is removed. We recommend you check the plate whenever you empty the compactor.1. Open the main door and remove the waste bin.2. Clean the bottom of the compaction plate3. To clean on top of the plate, close the main door and start a compaction cycle. After a few

seconds, press the E-Stop switch to stop the compaction cycle.4. Open the main door. Clean paper and debris from the top of the plate. 5. Close the door and raise the plate with the Up switch.6. Open the door and replace the waste bin.7. Close the door and turn the handle clockwise to lock.

Compaction Supplies You can keep your new compactor operating efficiently by only using genuine Radia Products™ replacement bags and parts.

    • 50 count roll of replacement bags made of heavy 3-mil, metallocene polyethylene, which reduces punctures and tears and prevents leaks

    • Poly bonnets help keep the compaction plate clean (not included)• Optional TC50 Transport Cart with hoist to lift heavy waste loads into a dumpster
