Create a New Drawing

A drawing template is a drawing that has pre-defined styles and layer properties (name, color, linetype, etc.) set for objects, labels, tables, and commands. A template is saved as a .DWT file that can be used to start a new drawing. By using the template, a new drawing automatically has all the pre-defined settings already specified. Their use helps to make implementing standards easy and available to everyone within a company, all with a single file. Any changes made to settings once the drawing is created do not affect the original template. AutoCAD Civil 3D is supplied with default templates or you can create your own.

Common settings for a template file include:

• Unit type and precision • Title blocks, borders, and logos • Layer names • Snap, Grid, and Ortho settings • Grid limits • Dimension, Text, and Object styles • Linetypes • Point Groups • Styles • Labels • Description Keys • Command Settings • Feature Settings

Drawing Settings control all of the basic commands for the drawing unless there is a specific override at the feature or command level.

1. In the Settings tab of the Toolspace, right-click on First Day and select Edit Drawing Settings...

2. Select the Units and Zone tab. This enables you to specify the dimensional units (linear and angular), define the coordinate system, and set the scale for the drawing.

3. Set the options as shown below.

4. Select the Transformation tab. This enables you to transform the coordinate system selected in the Units and Zone tab for local specifications.

5. Select the Object Layers tab. This enables you to specify layers for objects. Autodesk has included both metric and imperial templates that contain varying numbers of styles for the AutoCAD Civil 3D objects. These templates use the National CAD Standard (NCS) for their layer naming convention. You can specify a Prefix or Suffix and type an asterisk (*) to include the object name as the modifier in the layer name and to give each object a unique layer name.

Label Style Defaults

As with the drawing settings, label style defaults can be set to control all labels in a drawing. This is done using the Edit Label Style Defaults dialog box. These settings can be individually overridden at the label style level.

Tip: Using the Visibility setting in the drawing-level label settings is a quick way to turn off all labels in a drawing. If you want a different setting for an individual label style, you can override the default in a subordinate setting.

1. In the Settings tab of the Toolspace, right-click on First Day and select Edit Label Style Defaults...
