Budget AssignmentAfter graduation you will eventually want to leave home and get your own place. Do you know what it will cost? The following assignment will help you have a realistic understanding of just what the cost of living is and how much income you will need to support yourself. Please do your research either on the internet (using such websites as Craigslist) or with the help of another adult who pays these expenses.

So you are considering moving out:① Prepare a shopping list of the items you will need to purchase to set up a place of your own, then research the costs. You can use flyers, catalogues, Craigslist, etc. ② How much will it cost per month to cover basic housing expenses- Choose a location (city?) ___________________________. Use Craigslist to find a rental place. Will you be sharing with a roommate? Or will you live in university housing? (Check university websites for student housing costs.)③ You will need to eat. What will that cost each month? How about your personal expenses? Clothing? You may not go shopping every month but you will need to plan for when you do.④ How much are transportation costs, whether public or you own a vehicle?⑤ You’ll want a social life?⑥ Determine how many hours you need to work to accommodate for this or if you will be going onto college or university, how much will you require in student loans, work &/or RESP’s (aslto meet your monthly expenses.

For this exercise, you may use one of the following options (please circle 1 or 2)

1. If working fully time, your monthly income is:

Minimum wage @ $10.85 hour x 37.5 hours x 4 weeks= $1,627.50 / month to work from

2. If attending school &/ working part-time, your monthly income is:

Minimum wage @ $10.85 hours x hours = $ ;Student loans: $ ____ (or: Registered Education Savings Plan (RESP): $ = $ /month to work from ).

Shopping List Cost (est.only)Furniture $TV/Computer $Kitchen $Bedroom $Bathroom $

Initial Cost (not to be added to monthly budget): $

Your Financial Goals for the future: Setting your financial goals puts you in charge of your money and your life. Your goals can be short or long term, small or large, but they all need to be achievable. The first step to getting sorted is to work out where you want to be financially and what your priorities are. Be specific and realistic. Keep each goal simple and give it a timeframe and a dollar amount.

Set some smaller goals to help you get there – like saving for a deposit or paying off your credit cards.

Set some big goals - like buying a home or saving for your retirement (this could be your biggest goal of all).
