A FREE ONE-DAY PARENTING CLASS

S pring Creek Church of the Brethren is partnering with COBYS Family Services,

Day Seven Ministries, Love INC of Greater Hershey, and a local addiction

counselor to provide a parenting class that builds and strengthens families.

Parents or caregivers

of children of all ages

are welcome to attend.

This one-day interactive class

will be held at the church on Saturday,

October 20, 2018, starting at 8 a.m.

and going until 4:30 p.m.

Based upon your schedule, you may attend

either one or all four of the following workshops:

Parenting in a Porn-is-the-Norm Culture

Hope for Families Faced with Addiction

Ready. Set. Slow.

S eptember is here. Kids are back in school.

Sports, band, choir and other extracurricular

activity schedules amp up. Labor Day brings the

end of summer and we’re back to a “normal”

routine. We’re off and running. In the church

we resume regular Wednesday Night Alive soon,

choir kicks off their season, Youth Group meets,

and our church activity calendar fills up. Vacation

season ends, and we’re back to the busy grind.

Yet one of the themes that comes up time and again through Scripture is that of Rest. In the beginning

God creates. God fills the earth with all kinds of vegetation, creatures and lastly God’s image-bearer,

humans. Then as everything is about to be set in motion, God rests. Before creation begins the business

of being fruitful and multiplying, the Creator and Sustainer takes a break.

In a way the narrative of Scripture can be told through the theme of rest. God himself rests with creation

at the beginning. But soon God’s people find themselves slaves in Egypt. They are forced to work

relentlessly. Their personal worth gets wrapped up in how much they are able to produce for Pharaoh.

Then, after the exodus, God commands the people to live in new ways. God gives the people good news

of rest in the form of one of the Ten Commandments. Elsewhere in The Law, God spells out a dramatic

practice of Sabbath rest every seven years and then a society-reorienting rest called Jubilee.

In the New Testament Jesus proclaims the good news of rest. The people are no longer bound by laws

of rest, but can truly receive rest as a gift. In fact, in Jesus we can find the only true rest. Total peace

and quiet.

Jesus invites all of us who are worn out, struggling, exhausted to come and find rest in him. In following

Jesus we can find a new way of living. We can be free to slow down and rest. We are freed to remember

we are humanBEINGS, not humanDOINGS. God loves us because we are God’s creation, not because

of what we have, or haven’t achieved.

As we jump back into the routine, busy schedules of fall, I invite you to join us in September as we learn

more about Sabbath rest. Ready! Set! Slow.

Join in serving at the Disaster Relief Auction on September 21 & 22. Youth and families are needed to help with the children’s auction on Friday evening and Saturday late morning until mid-afternoon. For more info see Michelle or Marsha Heisey.

Youth Sunday School begins September 2, with a prayer walk through the neighborhood – praying for our schools, our family and friends and our community. Youth 6th-12th grade should meet in the Youth Room first.

September 9, Middle and High School will meet together in the Youth Room for Sunday School. Middle School youth grades 6th-8th will have Sunday School in Michelle’s office, and High School grades 9th-12th will meet in the Youth Room. Classes will meet together the last Sunday of every month for “SOS - Sharing Our Stories” and on a few other occasional Sundays. Parents you are invited to join your young person in the Youth Room for Sunday School on September 23 when we will talk about the upcoming year and pray together as we start a new school and church year. This fall our Middle School will be studying our New Testament biblical ancestors. Senior Highs will be using a new curriculum “Live a year with Jesus” where they will study the life of Jesus, discover in depth who he is, what he did during his earthy ministry, the truths he taught, and how they can share his message.

SEE YOU AT THE POLE day is Wednesday, September 26. All around the globe, in every time zone, students will be gathering at their flagpoles, praying for their school, friends, family, churches and communities. “See You at the Pole” is a day committed to global unity in Christ and prayer for this next generation.

Bethany Seminary Completes New Branding Project

A new logo, a completely redesigned website, and graphic themes represent the culmination of work by

members of the Bethany Theological Seminary community to give the Seminary a re-envisioned public

presence. “A change in an institution’s outward appearance should spark interest in what is happening within

its mission and program,” says Jeff Carter, Seminary President. “Consistent with our historic values, Bethany’s

new logo depicts the power of scripture read in community,

with colors that represent growth and wisdom. Our new

tagline—'so that the world flourishes’—speaks to the hope

of our mission while leaving room for individuals to live into

the ways God is calling them to serve. With a restructured

The senior activity for October is the ANE 55 Plus Banquet at Yoder’s Restaurant in New Holland. The event is at noon on Wednesday, October 24th.

Entertainment will be “One Heart, One Voice.” The meal choice features broasted chicken or ham loaf with tossed salad, green beans, baby carrots, mashed potatoes, and ice cream. Cost is $18.00/ person.

COBYS Bike & Hike Seeks to Extend Growth Streak to 20th

Year

T he 22nd annual COBYS Bike & Hike is Sunday, September 9, at Lititz Church of the Brethren. The event includes a three-mile walk, 10- and 25-mile bicycle rides,

and the 65-mile Dutch Country Motorcycle Ride. A silent auction runs throughout the afternoon. Donations of door prizes and auction items will be welcomed until the week of the event.

The Bike & Hike is COBYS’ signature fundraiser, raising more than $1.3 million for COBYS ministries, since its inception. Last year, the event grossed $136,669 and attracted more than 600 people. Participants included 306 walkers, 129 bicyclists, 166 motorcyclists on 104 cycles, and additional friends who stopped in to visit and participate in the silent auction.

Bike & Hike income has grown for 19 consecutive years. Planners are seeking to make it 20, while also setting a new attendance record.

“We are off to a great start this year, with record business support already in the bank,” said Director of Development Don Fitzkee. “Now we just need walkers, riders, and donors to get us the rest of the way.”

Walkers and bicyclists donate a $25 registration fee, obtain support from sponsors, or both. Motorcycles are $35 per cycle, plus $25 for an additional passenger. Pre-register by September 5 to receive a $5 discount. Individuals who raise $25 or more in pledges do not need to pay the registration fee.

Participants receive a free t-shirt, ice cream, refreshments, and a chance to win a door prize. Those who raise certain levels of support earn additional prizes. Junior and senior high youth groups who raise $1,500 or more earn a gym/pizza night.

A WJTL radio personality will provide live reports from the event.

The way we live every moment

“First be reconciled to your brother or sister (Matthew 5:24b)

Worship encompasses all of life (James 1:22-27; Matt. 5:23-24). Worship can

never be considered only in the context of a Sunday service or a ceremonial

observance. The New Testament repeatedly contends that the way we live

every moment of every day is part of our worship; that our thoughts and

actions on weekdays may be more indicative of our effectiveness in worship

than our Sunday ceremonies. Just as faith without works is dead, so is

worship without daily commitment to God and neighbor. The epistle of James

insists that we must act upon the word we hear in worship, and Jesus made

it clear that we cannot make an appropriate offer to God if we are seriously at

DISASTER RELIEF AUCTION

T he Brethren Disaster Relief Auction is only a few short weeks away on September 21 & 22

at the Lebanon Fairgrounds. There is so much to see and do. If you have not picked up a booklet please do so and see all the exciting things that are going on. There are also some really good articles in there. I have one I wrote about the children’s activities going on that weekend, and there is also one in there from Pete Kontra who most of you know.

The youth of our church are going to be helping out with the children’s activities and other things around the auction, such as face painting, balloon art, being runners for the children’s auction, helping at the children’s store, and helping to collect trash. Come out and support the auction and support our youth as they help out, too!

The auction needs other volunteers to help in various areas such as the Bake Stand, Produce Stand, Food, and Runners for the auctions. Would you consider helping? The website is updated, and all the areas that need help can be found on there. You can sign up there, too. If you don’t have access you can contact me, and I can get you in touch with the committee that needs help. The website is: https://www.brethrendisasterreliefauction.org.

We talked this summer about getting the adults and the youth together, and this is one way we can do that by volunteering together.

There have been so many disasters in recent weeks and in the past year. The money from the auction goes to help those families in need. We had many Hurricanes last year not to mention the Tornado’s and Flooding and the Wild Fires. So much devastation and so much need; that is why this is one way we can give back to help others in need.

The Bible theme for this year’s conference comes from Philippians 4:8 ~ “Finally, beloved, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is pleasing, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence and if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things.”

There are certainly many true, honorable, just, pure, pleasing, commendable, excellent and praiseworthy things happening in our families, churches and communities to share with one another at our District Conference! We’re already getting excited about it! Why? Because it is a wonderful time of joy with other members of our extended Christian family. This year, we will be returning to a Friday night worship and fellowship time and a Saturday Conference. Certainly, we will be praising God and enjoying each other through God’s love during our Saturday business sessions, but our time of worship will be a separate and special event by itself once again this year. We will lift our voices to our Creator and Sustainer and celebrate His goodness for us as we meditate on this year’s theme “Think About Good Things.”

LONDONDERRY VILLAGE

P lan to join us on Sunday evening, September 30, for a concert by "Brass Triumphant," a nine member brass

ensemble from the central Pennsylvania area. They have

ministered in various churches, Messiah Village, Fort

Hunter, Masonic Village and will return to Londonderry Village. The concert will be held in the DiMatteo Worship

Center at 7 PM. A free will offering will be taken to support

the Village. Community and friends are invited.

Operation Christmas Child

I t’s hard to believe, but packing shoeboxes for

Operation Christmas Child is only two months

away. Mark your calendars for October 17 and join

us in the Kids Zone room for our packing party during

Wednesday Night Alive. It’s a lot of fun, and we’d

love to have you!

Collections are going great, and we should be able to

pack over 150 shoeboxes again this year. Thank you

so much for all of your donations. Our collection item

for September will again be School Supplies. Check

out all the back-to-school sales. The items we need

the most are: crayons, markers, colored pencils,

erasers, pencils, pens and small tablets. I will be

doing inventory of everything we have and will post a

list of anything else we still need in upcoming weekly

announcements. I have also been working on some

craft ideas for shoeboxes. Check out the display in

the Gathering Area. If you are interested in making

some crafts or getting together to work on some, just

let me know (saalbright@comcast.net). Please keep

OCC in your prayers as leadership, churches and

groups across the country begin to prepare for

National Collection week in November. Thank you for
