Starting small can be of great benefit, as customers can organically develop lasting relationships built on trust and recognition of jobs well done and from there, numerous new

and often larger opportunities can present themselves. That is exactly what happened for C.O.Williams Construction (COW) and in 1970, the company was incorporated.

Still working alongside its longstanding and widely recognised slogan of “We’ll move the earth to please”, COW is now recognised as one of the Caribbean’s most trusted, respected and sought after civil engineering and highway construction organisations, with offices in Barbados, Antigua and St. Lucia.

With a huge portfolio of services on offer, COW has welcomed both major Government and business contracts as well as residential clients and covers a wide range of activities including, but not limited to; earth-moving, road building, resurfacing, quarrying, landfill construction, tennis courts and driveways. But that’s not all the company can offer.

With an asphalt and quarries company welcomed into the family, COW has become a major player in the asphalt and aggregate production industry. Making in excess of 35,000 tons of aggregate every month and 36,000 tons of asphalt a year, they have certainly made their mark.

C.O. WILLIAMS CONSTRUCTION LTD

Founded back in 1960, C.O.Williams Construction was a small but mighty operation that offered straightforward earth-moving and agricultural assistance, all with the help of a single tractor. Though a modest beginning, it allowed for the development of key values that are still present in the operation today.”

Helping to make BETTER ROADS!

Our asphalt is produced under vacuum process conditions to ensure a high quality product, utilizing heavy fuel oil as feedstock. The plant processes 1000 barrels per day, producing a 50:50 ratio of Penetration Bitumen and Heavy Vacuum Gasoil. Other grades of asphalt produced are Cationic Emulsions, Cutbacks and Performance grade Bitumens.

It’s incredible to think that a small company, sporting just one single tractor could have come so far, in what feels like a very short space of time. Of course, we know that 55 years isn’t exactly a flash in the pan, but still, to have diversified and expanded to such an extent is an impressive feat.

Having identified a gap in the market, COW offers a wide variety of construction-industry support services, such as equipment rentals and is affiliated with numerous respected companies throughout the region, making it something of a one-stop shop for all your needs. In fact, the list of equipment available to hire does make it seem unlikely that anyone else would ever be needed. They can offer everything from bulldozers and rippers through to hydraulic excavators and compressors and everything in between. Strangely though, there is no sign of that first lone tractor on their hire sheet!

Seemingly comprising of three main arms, COW has diversified enormously, but then focused in on sub-sections of their industry

that can be managed simply and autonomously, if necessary. Equipment rentals is one arm and looks to be a hugely successful enterprise, in part, thanks to the ongoing uptake in developments and construction in the region. Next comes the large Government and business contract arm.

It says a lot about any company when local Government is willing to work with them and in the case of COW, this is a regular occurrence, thanks to their timely approach, client-centric outlook and a dedication to completing tasks not just to the standards required, but in excess of them. The COW yardstick of excellence is not to be underestimated and is directly responsible for the continued provision of major services.

While smaller companies will be satisfied with only offering residential services, COW has aimed far higher, while still keep its feet on the ground and taking care of those clients that helped to get them to where they are today. No job is too big, but equally, no task is too small or beneath the inclusive team, so while one day

boulder walls and gabions might be being added to a luxury new build, the next day could see a driveway resurfacing task being the top priority, ahead of coastal reclamation the day after that. It’s this kind of varied portfolio that reassures clients that this is a company entrenched in hands on experience, history and old fashioned values of customer service and craftsmanship and not just a quick start up operation that has seen a potential for profit.

In fact, this is exactly what separates COW from its competitors; a deep seated and genuine desire to do more and better. The apathy that has infiltrated so many modern businesses has been demonstrably shut out of COW and in its place stands a team of experts that are ready to help. Humble beginnings are nothing to sneer at, as they develop a good-natured tenacity that few other life experiences can and in the case of COW, it’s clear that from small acorns, mighty oak trees really can grow.
