General Overview
Copernicus
C O P E R N I C U S I N B R I E F
• Copernicus, the Earth Observation programme of the European Union:
– Monitors the Earth, its environment and ecosystems
– Prepares for crises, security risks and natural or man-made disasters
– Contributes to the EU’s role as a global soft power
• Adopts a full, free and open data policy
• Is a tool for economic development and a driver for the digital economy

In situ
I N - S I T U : O V E R V I E W
• In situ data = observation data from ground-, sea-, or air-borne sensors, reference and ancillary data licensed for use in Copernicus
• Use of In situ data:
– Validate & calibrate Copernicus products
– Reliable information services
• Implementation in two tiers:
– Tailored in situ data for each Copernicus service level
– Cross-cutting coordination across services by the EEA

component at the mid-trophic level, link
to understand behavior and dynamics of
high-trophic level (fishes)
• Apr. 2019: new CMEMS product for
micronekton to better address the
Marine Resources area of benefit.
• Micronekton used for
projection of fish stocks

On 24 August 2014 a large fire broke out in a forest region near Kalabaka, district of Thessalia, central Greece. The map shows burnt areas in orange. It was released as a result of a Copernicus EMS activation after the outbreak of the fire to support the disaster response authorities involved in the
operations.

Copernicus Hackathons
o 20 Copernicus hackathons are organised every year throughout Europe.
o For each hackathon, the Commission finances 85% of your costs, up to EUR 20,000.
o Organisations willing to organise a hackathon (clusters, companies, universities…) can apply throughout the year
https://hackathons.copernicus.eu/
o A Copernicus hackathon is a sprint-like event in which computer programmers and subject-expertscollaborate intensively to develop software based on Copernicus.
Copernicus

Copernicus Incubation Programme
o The Commission finances the incubation of 20 start-ups per year, with 50,000 euros per start-ups.
o Start-ups are incubated in the incubator of their choice.
o The call for start-ups is permanently open (with evaluation every quarter). Start-ups must apply jointly the incubator/accelerator of their choice (based in Europe).
https://copernicus-incubation.eu/
Copernicus

Copernicus Masters
o A competition for start-ups developing applications based on Copernicus
https://www.copernicus-masters.com/
Copernicus
31
Copernicus Accelerator
o The Copernicus Accelerator is a one-year coaching programme. Each start-up receives a mentor for theduration of the programme.
o Accelerator participants receive business courses online (every month).
o The Copernicus Accelerator has supported more than 100 start-ups since 2016. It give access to thelargest network of geospatial start-ups in Europe.
o Access to the Accelerator:1) Winning a Copernicus Master2) Winning a Copernicus Hackathon3) Applying through an open call
