FIND THE AUSSIENATIVE ANIMALS
Australia’s largest raptor, the wedge-tailed eagle (Aquila Audax), feeds primarily on rabbits and hares — which is excellent news for Australian native wildlife! This pred-ator is native to the Australian mainland, Tasmania and Southern New Guinea. They are found from sea level to alpine regions in the mountains, and have a great eye for real estate; building their nest with a good view of the surrounding countryside. They eat both carrion and live animals, and when they work in a group, they can kill ani-mals as large as adult kangaroos! They are monogamous and reportedly mate for life.
Wedge-Tailed Eagle facts:
l The name Aquila Audax translates from Latin to the“Bold Eagle,” which is a very true reflection of thismagnificent bird’s hunting ability.
l They can fly for up to 90 minutes at a time, andreach heights of over two kilometres.
l This species is considered to be the world’s mostcommon large eagle.
l Wedge-tailed eagles feature in many dream time stories forIndigenous Australians: the eagle Bunjil is an important creator beingfor the Kulin people of central Victoria. In the Adelaide plains, theKaurna people believe the eagle’s claw takes the form of a constella-tion known as Wilto (the Southern Cross).
