Retire the X in C’mas

An updated email response I sent on November 15, 2003 about using C'mas not X-mas

Dear Leslie,

After reading your article "Questioning Holiday Tradition" I felt that you expressed what I havebeen feeling for over 15 years. It has been my personal mission to change the way the word

Christmas is abbreviated. It is yet another iconic change that has been difficult for me to get

others to adopt. However, I have personally used C’mas instead of x-mas since 1987 for the

same reasons you wrote and quoted in your article:

"[The equilateral cross] is a sacred symbol that has been around for a long, long time. It

has also been abused by many. As this new potential for knowing the God within was

awakening on the planet at that time, humanity did something to this sacred symbol.

They nailed a man to it! They placed a horrible energy on this sacred symbol. They put

suffering in the doorway of divine revelation. It has stayed there ever since ."

As a Catholic child I was taught that the X is a symbol for Jesus on the Cross so we will always

remember he was born to die for our sins. Well first of all, it is supposed to be a cross + not an X

which it has been since at least the 15th

century. I’ve also read that the X originated as the

symbol for Chi in the Greek alphabet. The Greek Chi or X is the first letter in the Greek word

Christos.

When seen with the physical eyes, C'mas has a calming and "unknotting" effect on my heart

and mind. Ultimately, it would be best to not abbreviate the word at all. But I envision seeing all

of those hand-painted signs and printed ads now reading: C'mas Trees for Sale and Big C'mas

Sale! or C'mas Event! C’mas cards, C’mas lights, C’mas gifts, C’mas carols, etc. embracing this"grammatically correct abbreviation" rather than continuing to use the subliminally denouncing

and denying 'X' version.

And what does X symbolize and mean to us when we see it in signs and images? In any country

you go to the universal signs mean: not allowed, don't go there, not permitted, crossed out,

cancelled. So what is it that we are crossing out, cancelling, not allowing, not permitting? The

very energy and state of consciousness and being that the day is supposed to be celebrating,

the Christ state of consciousness.

Isn’t it time that we decided for ourselves that if we celebrate or have a business that benefits

from Christmas, to abbreviate it the same way every other word is abbreviated – by using the

letters that actually appear in the word!

Finally, why would anyone want to be reminded of all the pain they suffered at the end of their

life when they're supposed to be celebrating their birthday?!? Let's give Jesus a break by

celebrating the meaning his LIFE and his teachings on C'mas and taking responsibility for our

own 'sins' every day.

One by one, little by little, we the people of the 21st

century can change this - without

permission of anyone but our own Christed Inner Authority! And for those who feel they still

need outside permission: I hereby grant you permission to use C ’ mas as the abbreviation for

Christmas from this day forth!
