the real concernsApropos of “Critical concerns remain” (TSI, Feb 5), one needs to ask why we need FDI in pharma sector? We have been doing well otherwise too. If and when we need investment, it ought to be based on the technologies and medicines necessitated by India's disease patterns. Th e choice ought to be in our hands as to where we source investments from. Th at way, we can avoid technologies with little or no evidence base or relevance to India. Th e Maira Committee has reposed a lot of faith in the Competition Commission of India (CCI). Overpricing of medicines and unethical marketing practices of pharma companies are not seen as a failure of competition or abuse of dominance. Indeed, these are not a primary concerns as yet to the CCI because of CCI's restricted interpretation of 'competition'. Th e CCI is perhaps already seen as helpless against, if not oblivious to, the real problems consumers have with pharma companies.

dark shadow of corruptionPrasoon S Majumdar once again alarms us by his article “Compulsive corruption” (TSI, Feb 5). Corruption has penetrated deep in our society and has been in a way institutionalised in our day to day life. Let alone the matter of Executive and Legislative, corruption has even become an integral part of our Judiciary and the fourth pillar of democracy – media. Th e pathetic condition of India as far as corruption is concerned is very much visible in the recent report of Transparency

International where India has been ranked very low. Th e hazardous co-products of corruption are not only hampering the multi-dimensional development of India but also giving birth to the demon of poverty, illiteracy, starvation, malnutrition, injustice, inequality and various other odds which are going to ruin the social structure of our society in the long run.

Gopal Jee SinghBallia, UP

time to get toughTh is refers to “Chinese checkers” (TSI, Jan 22). While India wants to be cooperative and tolerant with China with a view to establish harmonious relationship in the spirit of “Panchsheel”, the Chinese would reciprocate only in name and would play games to derail the peace process. Occasional border incursion in Ladakh is an usual tactic. Th e Chinese government’s recent denial of visa to certain Indian citizens from Arunachal Pradesh, denial of emergency medical treatment to an Indian diplomat and misbehaving with the Indian media are links of the same chain. Th erefore, it is time that India should also react and not tolerate everything just for the sake of maintaining cordial relations. Besides, India should insist for a comprehensive and result oriented meeting with a view to settle the border dispute between the two countries.

the politician-criminal nexusArindam Chaudhuri's editorial “An analysis of India's pathetic 95th rank...” (TSI, Jan 29) is a bold and accurate analysis of corruption in India which is reaching unprecedented levels. Commonwealth Games, 2G spectrum auction and the Adarsh Housing Society were projects to encapsulate the best of modern India which have gone spectacularly wrong due to

I write in reference to your cover story “Fake opinion poll exposed!” (TSI, Feb 5). In the last Assembly elections in West Bengal, Anandabazar Patrika and AC Nielsen group jointly brought out reports that were in favour of Mamata Banerjee. Star Ananda, Pratidin and Bartamanwere biased in favour of the opposition. Th ere appears to be some give-and-take between media houses and political parties. One feels that powerful media

houses are misplacing people's faith in them. Th e citadel of the Left Front was broken by such cooperation. By focusing on research and results that are tempered to suit an agenda, the media houses are tainting their own reputation. It doesn't befi t the Fourth Estate to be slaves of companies like AC Nielsen. If this continues, who will we trust?

BETRAYING OUR TRUST

corruption. A couple of years ago the entire nation was put to shame by the cash-for-vote scam in Parliament. Electoral reforms were proposed as a method to tackle the virus of corruption, but our political parties appear to be reluctant to cleanse the system. Most political parties aid and abet criminals for their interests. Swami Vivekananda once said, “Science without religion is lame and religion without science is blind.” One could argue that political parties without criminals are lame and criminals without political parties are blind. However, there is a silver lining that these scandals are coming to light because of enhanced political activism and active media. Our democracy is making strides towards greater accountability. Let's hope to proceed further.

america is at it againTh e edit “Now, the Americans want to shamefully ruin Iran through sanctions” (TSI, Jan 22) deciphers the ulterior motive of the US sanctions on Iraq. Th e US has reportedly imposed the sanctions to check the ‘serious’ threat presented by Iran’s nuclear programme. Th e sanctions no doubt are mainly targeted for achieving economical (Iran’s vast oil reserves) and strategic gains. In Iraq it was the still untraceable weapons of mass destruction. In Libya it was fi ght for democracy. Aft er all, Iran is the only major OPEC nation which dares to counter the hegemonic dictates. Th e sanctions also restrict other countries from buying Iranian oil. European Unions have also joined the sanctions bandwagon against Iraq. Experts opine that these sanctions are precursor of military off ensives. And if it that is on the cards, it has to come fast with the US presidential elections on the cards in November 2012. And at the receiving end

editorial, indeed, refl ect the poor infrastructural development in our country. Th ough, Arindam's analysis is absolutely spot-on, there is one aspect of the problem which strikes me. Bureaucratic red-tapism is cited as one of the prime reasons behind the lagging behind of the steel sector. Th is compels me to think who are these bureaucrats and why do they create hurdles in our country's march towards prosperity? Th ese bureaucrats are supposedly the brightest minds of the country and they are selected by one of the toughest tests on this planet. What, then, makes these brightest minds turn into much maligned roadblocks in India's progress? I am inclined to think that it is the uncalled for political interference that frustrates them. Th e declining morality of our politicians is to blame for the ills of our

THE BEST LETTERS OF THE WEEK a refreshing takeTh is is in response to the article "Not an inch more” on the recently concluded Jaipur Literary Festival (TSI, Feb 5) As the article duly noted, there was an unmistakable underlying theme behind almost all the intently followed discussions, that of dehumanisation and occu-pation. No other example could have explained the Abu Gharaib disgrace in a better way than the ‘sealed can’ illustration that Philip Gourevitch used. Th e Palestine question, the one that gives the title to the article, is one of

the most discussed issues today, and also one that is possibly the farthest from any hope of a resolution in the near future. Th e concept of compromise that is oft en put forth as one form of a solution is totally absurd, as Karl Sabbagh pointed out. Th ere is also the question of the ills of forcible occupation. It is relieving to know that it found its deserved share of attention at the lit-fest. Th e views of Sari Nusseibeh, Raja Shehadeh and David Hare were also thought-provoking.

Nakul DewanPathankot

let's lead, not follow Apropos of “Th e Steel Story...” (TSI, Feb 5), I fully subscribe to Arindam Chaudhuri's observation about Indian lethargy and Chinese energy. It is true that we have not gained from our experiences and are lagging behind. We want a shortcut to everything in life. Take the example of availability of 'help books' and 'guess papers' which are sold with the main aim of helping students pass their examinations and get promoted to the next class without bothering to learn anything. When I was a student, there were many around me whose only aim was to get promoted. And they used 'Chinese crutches' in form of 'guess papers' and self-help books like '10 Steps to Pass Your Exams'. Th ough these books come handy for lazy people like me, they have never helped me to excel in any activity. As a country, we have to lead, not just breathe. We should not copy China, they should copy us.

AjitNew Delhi

not just prof itTh e cover story on Mukesh Ambani, the great visionary business tycoon, was a motivating read which proved to be a sine qua non treatise on how to become successful in one’s forte (TSI, Jan 22). No doubt, his father’s legacy provided Mukesh a much-needed launch pad to blossom as a charismatic magnet, yet it was his being enfant terrible that earned him the sort of achievement which even his contemporaries envy. But what about the fl ip-side of accelerated development which we boast of and the colossal business empire Mukesh Ambani has carved out? Th e entire world economy now has been critically suff ering from the problems of what we call the energy crisis, fast depleting natural resources and global warming. It would have been a diff erent story had Ambani felt morally bound to chalk out plans to eff ectively deal with these issues instead of just profi teering from it.

pathetic rankingTh is refers to your fantastic editorial “An analysis of India's pathetic 95th rank in the corruption index...” (TSI, Jan 29) which ripped open the mind blowing statistics on the country's pathetic economic status due to corruption in the higher ups. Th e country has witnessed many scams of monumental proportions and still more skeletons may be awaiting in the cupboard to see the light of the day. Th e common man gets bewildered as to who should be held accountable for allowing this looting spree. Any one to answer?

Satya MurtyKakinada

who is the roadblock?Apropos of “ Th e steel story! Will Indians fi nally use Chinese labour to surge ahead?” (TSI, Feb 5), Arindam Chaudhuri's dispassionate analysis of the abysmal state of our steel sector was an eye-opener in more ways than one. Th e facts and fi gures presented in the
