Layoffs Affect Approximately 12

Island Consolidates with PLG On the eve of the release of the

long- awaited U2 album, Island Records has begun what they term "utilizing the PolyGram Label Group (PLG) for promo- tion, marketing and sales." Ap- proximately 12 staff positions have been slashed, but some of those people will be absorbed into PLG.

Also affected by the move is Island's independent distribu- tion system, which includes 4th & Broadway and Mango Records.

"An expanded involvement

with PLG at this time makes good sense," said Island CEO Chris Blackwell. "The formation of an independent -minded distribution system which could serve all the PolyGram labels is particularly exciting. A great majority of new music and future hits will come from this new alliance because the system will enable us to put records on the street quickly and efficiently. Furthermore, these changes will allow Island to con- centrate on what it does best -the acquiring and developing of cut- ting -edge artistic talent."

Relativity Streamlines Important Record Distributors (IRD) this week changed its name

to Relativity Entertainment Distribution (RED) in what the corn - pany calls a move designed to streamline and more clearly define their organization. Also affected is Relativity Records and house labels Combat and In- Effect.

"We don't want to just survive, we want to thrive in the coming decade," said Barry Kobrin, president of the company. "Sharing the common name eliminates any confusion by clearly establishing the relationship between label and distribution. It's time we draw public and industry attention to the fact that RED and Relativity Records are taking new and established artists from their starting point to the winning finish line."

RED is the largest independent distributor in the country. Its roster boasts names like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. They employ 165 staffers. According to a source at the label, no jobs will be eliminated.

Hitmakers' Seattle Success! Over the weekend (11 -12),

HITMAKERS held their fourth regional seminar in Seattle, Wash- ington with over 200 record and radio professionals in attendance. The sessions were debate -filled and dedicated to the current state and future health of Top 40 radio.

Highlights included an address by Imago Records Founder Terry Ellis; a discussion with Arbitron about the possible surveying of a 6-12 year -old demographic (the main question: who would be helping the child fill out his /her ARB diary?); "Sounds Of The Re- gion"-an analysis of Northwest stations such as KUBE and KPLZ

Seattle, KSND Eugene, KGOT and KPXR Anchorage, KKRZ (Z100) Portland OK95 (KIOK) Tri -Cities, KZHT /FM (HOT 94.9) Salt Lake City and KMEL San Francisco; and a luncheon showcase featuring SBK record- ing artist Russ Irwin.

INSIDE TOP 40 s, Dave ,h..

In the incredibly fast -paced world of music and radio, it comes as little surprise that a lot of folks say they feel disconnected or out of touch when they return from a one- or -two- week vacation. Northwest radio veteran R. Charles Snyder is back in the fold after spending two years as a car salesman. Charles spent fourteen of fifteen years in radio in the Medford, Oregon market -8-1 /2 at KYJC and 3 -1 /2 at KTMT handling PD /MD duties and doing mornings. He recently returned to KTMT as midday talent and MD, equipped with a new perspective -the one of a listener.

Citing burnout as his chief reason for hang- ing up the headphones, Charles says simply, "It quit being fun. The station wanted to head in a Dance direction and I promised myself if it ever stopped being fun I'd get out. To me, radio is not a job. I never come to work; I get to work." That attitude isn't hard to detect, especially when Charles talks about his pas- sion for music. He says he spends "on aver- age, twelve to fifteen hours a week doing nothing but listening to records." The job of selling cars, notes Charles, "involves either talking to potential buyers or standing around the showroom." It was during the standing around time that

Charles would listen to the radio, and over many months he developed a new apprecia- tion and understanding for the medium. "Some of the things I used to take for granted, identifying songs or artists, became impor- tant. Now I encourage everyone to really SELL the music -to give information as simple as the name of an album a particular song comes from."

Charles compares his current experience to being on an episode of the TV series "Quantum Leap." "I'm re- energized and it feels like I'm starting all over again, but I've got fifteen years of experience," he says. Besides music information, Charles includes general enter - tainment news and letting people know about relevant artists appearing on late night shows such as " Arsen io Hall," among items on the list of audience needs he compiled while away from the business.

Most of all, Charles feels it's critical to "listen to the music, then listen to your listeners. Talk to them every chance you get wherever you

14

happen to be." Oh, and by the way, "R." is really Charles' first name. He had it changed legally years ago. Well, it's easy to spell and what a way to make an initial impression! Topping 200 total reports isn't far off for

INSIDE A/C by Diane Rufer and Ron Fell

GLORIA ESTEFAN's "Live For Loving You" takes the #1 slot from BOB SEGER by a narrow margin. AMY GRANT's latest is up from #16 to #3

over the past two issues, and in that time has gained 91 HEAVY reports. Looks like a natu- ral #1 any minute now. MICHAEL BOLTON's "When A Man Loves

A Woman" is at #8 after two chart weeks. Its station base of 212 stations includes 76% in quality rotation. The 30 new ADDs this week include KTHT, KEFM, WAFL, KCRE and WMYX. Up #27 to #16 to #12 is ROBERTA FLACK

and MAXI PRIEST's "Set The Night To Music." HIT FACTOR is now 78% of 180 players and the 12 new stations include Y92, WKGW, WSTU, KKOR, KBOI and CKFM. Second only to MICHAEL BOLTON's chart

run is BONNIE RAITT's 'I Can't Make You Love Me," which leaps #39 to #14 over the past two weeks. Two -thirds of all players are already HIT FACTORed and that doesn't include another 29 ADDs this week includ- ing WLYY /FM, WRVA, KOST, KMJC /FM, WCOD, WIVY /FM and WJCL /FM.

JAMES TAYLOR's "Copperline" cannot be ignored by A/C radio any longer. Seventy- three percent of the 172 stations that have "taken the chance" of playing the track are committed to serious rotations (80% from stations on it more the a week). New for KELO /FM, KCMX, WELI, WRVA, KWAV/ FM, KKOR and KBAU /FM. Sixty percent of ROD STEWART's play on

"Broken Arrow" is HIT FACTORed. The song

moves #36 to #20 on the strength of a 28% increase in its HIT FACTOR and another 33 ADDs including WZNY, KSTP /FM, KEYI, WIVY /FM, WKLI /FM, KATW /FM and JOY99. ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA PART

II, the Jeff Lynne -less reformed group, takes an additional 27% in HIT FACTOR rotations up 14 ranks (39 to 25). New at KFOR, KYMG/ FM, KUIC, KORT, WESP, KWNG, WRJC, WKBX, KGRC and WAVU. Number one MOST ADDED this week is

SMOKEY ROBINSON's "Double Good Ev- erything." Among the stations hearing double good this week are K103, WAHR, WSUL, WIHN, KFMB, J107, WAFL, KSBL, WHSY/ FM, WOBM /FM, WMT /AM, WRFC and KWXX. Last issue's RECORD TO WATCH, the

by Diane Rufer & Ron Fell

GENESIS No Son Of Mine (Atlantic) An intense and sad story about a boy who leaves his troubled family and is never ever able to reconcile his father's disavowal -kind of a "Living Years" with- out resolution.

RICHARD MARX Keep Coming Back (Capitol) A new label and a whole new approach to making hit records for Mr. Marx. State -of- the -art production and an al- most souled -out performance will take this one high on many charts.

LISA STANSFIELD Change (Arista) From her sophomore album, "Real Love," this smokey ballad is one of the year's strongest melodies and should have a long shelf life as an airplay staple in many formats.

LOHNNY MATHIS duet with PATTI AUSTIN You Brought Me Love (Columbia) This ballad has the richness of these two masterful vocalists, two adults that know how to bring tenderness across. The first single from Johnny's duet album "Better Together," is also the love theme from the TV's soap opera "As The World Turns."

DAN HILL I Fall All Over Again (Duality) Quality with a capital Q is a Dan Hill trademark. This Hill ballad is beauti- fully produced, and finds our hero in good voice. Singing a song about trying not to fall in love.

JOHN O'KANE The Dance Goes On (Charisma) The former lead singer in the group Millions Like Us, John O'Kane has one of those powerful voices that works well on this kind of up 'n' at 'em pop song.

RIC OCASEK The Way You Look Tonight (Reprise) Ric, the driving force of The Cars, has production help from Nile Rodgers on this intriguing single from his "Fireball Zone" album.

JAZZ NEW RELEASES HYMNS TQ THE SILENCE - VAN MORRISON (POLYDOR) With two discs and twenty -one songs spanning ninety-six minutes, Hymns To The Silence has room. Room to swell, percolate, gear down, gear up; even more room to explore the spirituality that has been building in Van Morrison's music since he changed labels eight releases back. Es- pecially over the last few, Morrison's best work has been laced with meditations on life before rock n roll. Oddly, Morrison isn't above equat- ing God, Ireland and Big Bill Broonzy on a single astral plane. I know serious Jazz and AA people will relate directly to the reverence with which Morrison holds music, especially the songs on this set. Because of its congruency to the many approaches of Jazz and AA, programmers will be able to fill any mood or daypart with the music available here. That includes reverent Sunday mornings. B'twixt and 'tween both eleven track sets, you'll find not a single emo- tional void, save humor. Ultimately, it all de- pends on how far you want to go. Beginners: " "Why Must I Always Explain" and "I'm Not Feeling It Anymore." Intermediate: "SoCompli- cated" and "Hymns To The Silence." Advanced: "On Hyndford Street" and " "Be Thou My Vi- sion."

with Blue Light Red Light. Special detail is paid to maintaining credible arrangements and mean- ingful tunes and lyric. Harry pushes to keep progressing stylistically, not content with reams of flattering press notices and capturing the imaginations of folks as diverse as Jazz solons to Top 40 programmers to Playboy centerfolds. Vocally, Connick has shed that studio-coached delivery. On "You Didn't Know Me When," he belts out clever insider narrative: I played third chair trombone /In an out of work poker band /We looked for gigs and ships /In countries that had no land.. "He Is They Are" is a sophisticated Boy/ Girl, He /She contrast study. "With Imagination (I'll Get There)" is the Connick philosophy set initially to the metre swing of a New Orleans funeral march, only to ease into a Bobby Darin - type Big Band rave -up finale. Check out the theatrical pool hall ambience of "The Last Pay- day." In addition to Swing, Harry is agile at mixing genres, havin' fun and expanding his large audience's sensibilities to the lovely nu- ances and subtleties of pure Jazz culture.

THE VERY BIG CARLA BLEY BAND (WATT/ ECM) The moniker The Very Big Carla Bley Band proves again that CB never loses her touch nor her sense of humor. The longish "United States" is a mood swing of several large ensemble styles ranging from military, Swing, Kenton pastels, classical etude Afro -Cuban and Bley's own

musical minefield of false stops and starts. "Lo Ultimo" is the ultimate of this collection in that via this bittersweet, emotive piece, Bley drops her quirky guard and really turns on the razzle- dazzle. She boldly experiments by blending per- cussive waves of East Coast Salsa with a chaotic soprano sax solo, a barking baritone sax inter- lude and a daffy sax quintet recital. It's easy to see why Bley still wins all the Jazz polls for arranging. Quite simply, she is the hippest and best of them all. Bar none.

WORLDWIDE - EVERYTHING BUT THE GIRL (ATLANTIC) After establishing themselves first with college/ Alternative radio, and then Adult Alternative ( #1 AA album of 1990), Everything But The Girl uses that power to self -produce themselves again. The results are a culmination of every- thing Everything has learned to date. The broad- est arrangement (horns and all) is "Twin Cities," where Ben Watt uses the American city and culture as a personal metaphor. Partner Tracey Thorn goes one better on "One Place," the musician's daydream of a normal home and job. Most of the other material on Worldwide com- bines EBTG's success from last year's number one with the stark coolness that distinguished the band during their "Rough Trade" era. By closing in the circle a bit, EBTG succeeds in escaping the dilemma of getting hurt by too glitzy a follow -up.

P.D. NOTEBOOK

by Eric Norberg

A LITTLE PROBLEM AT THE STUDIO In 1987, the FCC changed the rule that

required a station's "main" studio be located within the boundaries of its city of license-or, alternatively, at its trans-

mitter. Under the rules as amended, the station simply has to place its main studio within its "city grade signal contour," which certainly allows much more latitude. For- merly, stations had to apply for a waiver from the Commission if they wanted to locate the studio even a few feet outside the limits of their city of license; now the studio can be miles away -even in a different market, in some cases. I'm aware of a situation in which the only FM channel allocated to an SMSA of 250,000, in which a state capitol is located, moved its studio and offices to a Top 30 market 50 miles away. All they had to do, under the amended rules, was make sure it isn't a toll call for residents of their city of license to call them, and they did this with a "foreign exchange' number (a phone number in the telephone exchange of their city of license, for which they pay a considerable monthly charge, but on which calls can be placed as well as received).

This situation being legal, I was surprised to read an article written by Harry Cole, of the Washington, DC -based law firm Bechtel and Cole, published in the radio engineering news- paper Radio World, reporting that a North Carolina radio station has been found by the Commission to be violating the current "main studio rule." It was broadcasting from a bigger market 50 miles away. For clarifica- tion, I called Harry, and learned that the dis- tinction was that in this case, the station was broadcasting most of its programming from a studio outside its city grade contour. The staff thought it was doing this legally, since it did have a studio within the contour that it called its "main studio" -even while most of the programming came from the more distant studio, routed through the "main studio" con- trol board.

The legal point at issue, it seems, was that when the FCC relaxed the "main studio" rule as described, they also eliminated the rule that required at least 50% of the station's programming originate within the "main stu- dio." This was presumably intended to facili- tate the use of satellite program services (al- though the "network" rule already allowed up to 95% of a station's programming to origi- nate from a "network ") -and more impor- tantly, the new "time brokerage" operations in which a station is leased to rebroadcast the programming of another station. In ruling against the station, though, the FCC (as it so

often does) clarified its point after the fact! They decided that a "main studio" must not only contain the necessary broadcast equip- ment and connection to the transmitter, but also must have "full time managerial and full time staff personnel."

Since the Commission is not really specific about what this means, you should be aware that the station in question did have a full time Office Manager at this "main" studio during weekday business hours, two other part -time employees who worked there regularly, and a general manager who spent a minimum of two hours weekly at this "main" studio. This wasn't enough. It appears that the Commis- sion feels that at least one full time manager and one full time staff person would have been enough -but that's just my guess.

This does confirm that if the "main" studio is inside the "city grade contour" as defined by the FCC (the 3.6 my /m contour for FM, the 5 my /m daytime contour for AM) there is no problem. But if you are transmitting most of the time from a studio outside this contour, you may have an FCC fine looming on your horizon, even if you think you are adhering to the current FCC "main" studio rule. Better talk to your communications attorney if you have any questions about it.

By the way, a while back in this column, I

alluded to how big FCC fines can be now. Through a misprint, it appeared that I was telling you that the maximum fine is now $25,000. Uh uh. The Federal Communications Commission is now empowered to crank it up to $250,000 -a quarter of a million dollars! And in fact, they have already assessed that fine once (so far), so it's not just theoretical. It's a new world, ladies and gentlemen: At last the FCC has the power to assess a fine that can bankrupt the station receiving it.

Of course, most of the time the fines will be much less. But the new schedule of fines issued by the Commission shows that "inad- equate tower lighting and marking" can now be a $20,000 offense. If you refuse to let an FCC Inspector into the station -a rather stupid thing to do -it can now cost $18,750, even if there is nothing inside they shouldn't see! And, if your EBS equipment isn't working properly, which happens more than it should, forget the old $1,000 fine. It now can be $12,500!!! The message is plain: Anything you can get fined for is now much more expensive.

At the very least, that should inspire broad- casters to redouble their efforts to stay well within the limits of the rules!

My thanks to Communications Attorney Harry Cole for his help in preparing this col- umn. l

illfhat a party! Despite the problems at Foundations Forum '91, it was a great three days. Rock stars roamed

freely and music was plentiful all day and al- most all night. Aside from the scheduled music at the hotel, several labels had off -campus show- cases. The highlights were Sacred Reich, Galac- tic Cowboys and Rhino Bucket. Thursday's event focused on Crimson Glory and Baby Animals. Bang Tango closed out the Friday show which also featured Ugly Kid Joe, Claytown Troupe, The Almighty, Lillian Axe and Asphalt Ballet. Pictured here are foundations Megawinn-

ers, Megadeth. Saturday, after the panels closed with the always -funny Artist Sessions, Colum- bia spotlighted an acoustic set from Love and Hate, and Metal Blade featured cuts from the upcoming Fates Warning. Saturday was excep- tional with War Babies, Prong, XYZ, Scream- ing Jets, Soundgarden and Ozzy Osbourne.

The most attended panel was Meet The Prez, which featured moderator Mike Bone from Mercury Records and guests Brian Slagel of Metal Blade Records; David Glew of Epic Records; Al Cafaro of A &M Records, Phil Carson of Victory Music and Peter Paterno of Hollywood Records. In his keynote address a few years ago, Bone predicted that there would be a feeding frenzy for hard rock and heavy metal. How ironic to have him moderate the panel that promised that the new creed for all labels is "quality not quantity." Cafaro pointed out that no matter how deep the pockets, you have to keep replenishing the them or it's not going to work. The panelists talked about the big deals involving Aerosmith and Poison, and predicted that Metallica and Guns N' Roses are, most likely, up for the next big money deals. Bone pointed out how small the executive and artist pools have become in contrast with the upswing of all the new labels. Sales are still the bottom line and the recession is very real, with belt tightening still a big possibility at all levels of the business. All the presidents agreed that priority, focus and a good management team will lead to a serious commitment to artist de- velopment and a stronger base...

Bits & Pieces: The London Quireboys en- tered the studio October 15 to begin recording their new album with Bob Rock (Metallica, Motley Crue) at the helm. REVVING UP TIN MACHINE II

The Sales Brothers, Reeves Gabrels and a

rhythm guitarist/sax player named Bowie

by Kcnl7imnmrman

Tin Machine are holed up in a resort town on the coast of France. David Bowie is admittedly a little testy because all morning, with little success, he's been trying to assemble the band for a much needed vocal rehearsal in a 200 seater called, honestly, Theater Chateaubriand. As in the steak.

Just a few weeks before the band performed four gigs ( "live re- hearsals" according to guitarist Reeves Gabrels) in the United States. One, held in an airplane hanger served as the launching of Tin Machine II, the quartet's latest album; the debut of JVC's new company Victory Music, Tin Machine's label, and a television shoot for ABC and Don Kirshner's In Concert '91. As part of the ef- fect, the band miked the incoming

jets in stereo, included a live feed from the air traffic control tower and played louder than the planes.

"That was in keeping with the Tin Machine manifesto, which is to fully use whatever playing en- vironment we're in," explains a talkative Gabrels.

After twenty minutes of talking about Tin Machine and vibrator - driven guitars, David Bowie en- tered the room, much to Gabrels distraction.

"Do you want to try and find Tony in his room? I'm fed up with being nanny," Bowie half -way jests to his guitarist, while mon- keying with a switchblade.

So being part of a band must be easier than being an expensive solo attraction.

"Easy? This is a life ?" Bowie

jokes with mock horror, "I've never stayed in such shifty hotels. Food's bad. Can't wait for a solo career."

As Gabrels leaves the room, Bowie gets to the business at hand. All this talk about going back to a solo career is some sort of "in" band joke. The four seem to get along famously, purchasing switchblade knives together in the streets of a French village, a dan- gerous trend drummer Hunt Sales has started. Gabrels isn't the only victim of the mock wrath of Bowie. Soon he starts in on yours truly.

"Now you've got to ask me, 'Is this really a band ?' Then you ask me, 'Why am I in a band and not continuing a solo career ?' And, "Am I really not going to do those old songs again ? "'

Actually, David, I don't have a single question in front of me since the spirit of interviewing Tin Ma- chine would be to rely on no ad- vance questions at all.

"Good. All I remember vividly is running into Tony (Sales, bass- ist) in Los Angeles at the same time that I was hooking up with Reeves," he said, "Reeves and I

were initially at work on some- thing totally different. Out of that came the idea of working on some- thing with bass and drums. So we phoned Tony who brought his brother Hunt. We'd been jamming two or three weeks before in Los Angeles. It was all, circumstan-

tially, the perfect thing to do. Out of that evolved the album that became Tin Machine L"

In actuality, Tin Machine may have stemmed from a "happy ac- cident" that happened on one of Bowie's own "solo career" tours.

"My wife, Sara, is a hard news journalist who writes for the Boston Globe and The Christian Science Monitor," recalled Gabrels, "She was referred by a friend to David Bowie after his press person dropped out. After finishing a story on exploited chil- dren of the third world, she traded in the jungles for a ten week sab- batical touring with David Bowie. I met David four or five times on the tour. When they played Bos- ton, he came over to the house for dinner. The subject of guitars never came up, though he did borrow a lot of my art books.

"At the end of the tour, Sep- tember of '87, my wife gave David a tape of my band. In February of '88, we got posted to England so we moved. But while

I was

back in the States working with Rubber Rodeo, David called and said he had listened to the tape. I

sent him a postcard and thanked him for listening. We finally talked in May about doing something experimental and guitar- based."

TinMachinetheband still wasn't born.

"When David and I originally talked about it, months before even deciding to form a band, we'd play records like Sonic Youth into Cream, then Stravinsky into Hendrix then Television and Neu into Albert Collins and B.B. King. We decided that if we were to make music, we wanted to swirl it all together creating a total mood that would sound like all of that music being played at the same time. That was what we were look- ing for."

What Bowie got in Gabrels is pretty much what he's always found in a guitarist. And there's been a lot of great ones from Mick Ronson to Earl Slick to Carlos Alomar to the great Stevie Ray Vaughan and Adrian Belew. Like Belew, Gabrels is extremely ami- able and a manic player, a bender of notes with an experimental ap- proach to the guitar. He's also a purist when it comes to mixing synths with sense.

"I'm the one on the high horse about not using synthesizers, about wanting to do it all with guitars," Gabrels said, "Synthe- sizers are now the soft option, yet there is still a universe of sounds on the guitar that you can create without even pressing the string down on the fret board, using the pick -ups as an abstract noise.

"It's a lot like photography. Ever see those close -up pictures of dust blown up ten thousand times to where they look like cows out on a field? Instead of blowing up an image, we amplify.

"Another reason we avoid synths has to do with my own ego," laughs Gabrels, "When you list a synthesizer player, automati- cally the listener attributes any neat unusual sound to the key- board. Hey, the guitar is alive and well and doesn't need to be played only as a traditional instrument in the classic Byrds /Stones sense. Hendrix was just the beach head, the beginning."

So who's the boss? "I am!" shouts Bowie. "Like fuck," Gabrels shoots

back, "We are proof of democracy in action."

"Bullshit," someone else shouts in the background.

"I'm grumpy, very grumpy," Bowie states wryly, "Extremely grumpy at the moment. I've been waiting hours for these guys to get together to do a vocal re- hearsal. Nobody's materialized.

"It's beautiful here," Bowie con- tinues sarcastically, "Can you hear the sea outside the rooms (makes a sound of waves)? That's my im- personation of them. The sand is very beautiful. The walls in the city are eighteenth century, al- though there's a few from the thir- teenth century. Too much iodine in the sea air."

Oh the woes of rehearsing on the coast of France. However, things have been progressing fast. Onstage, Tin Machine is a dean example of confidence. On record, the songs serve only as a vague structural blueprint for live im- provisation. The album itself is a mixture of all four backgrounds.

"I still listen to old Brain records or old Edgar Froese records! Jane, those kinds of bands," Bowie ex- plained, 'l'in Machine certainly has a bedrock of middle seventies sounds. Reeves is quite taken with that period of music as well. I was involved with German music, so I think it's inevitable that would be one of our reference points. The Sales brothers go back further in terms of what they really hold

NEW NI/P IHOIP RELEASES by Brian A. Samson

NICE & SMOOTH - Ain't A Damn Thing Changed (RAL/Columbia) Get set for the serious funk. Nice & Smooth flow just like their name sugguests. If you can't get into their original rhymin' style, then just kick back and listen to the dope music and samples. For a taste of the album check out "Down The Line," featuring Gang Star, Melo T & Preacher Earl, or use Sanford and Son Sample on "Step By Step," "Sometimes I

Rhyme Slow," features a live acoustic riff lifted from Tracie Chapman's "Fast Car." The funky new sounds of Nice & Smooth keep Hip -Hop alive and moving foward. Contact Bobitto at 212420 -0790. Justin Barenbaum

ORGANIZED KONFUSION - Fudge Pudge (Hollywood Basic) After a much slept on debut the Konfusion remains consistant by droping another groove for the ghetto blasters. If you got off on "Southside," this second release off the forth- coming self -titled album will rock your jeeps and request lines. The addicting J.B. bass line and Jazz basted piano bed sets up a slammin' backdrop for the sophisticated, adventurous

tales of skins and buggin' out. O.K., aka Prince Poetry, and Pharoahe Monch lay their dis- tinctive subject matter over kickin' beats for this '12 specialty which is available only to club, record pool, and college -mixshow D.J.s. Contact Rockberry at (818) 560 -7235. BAS

MAINSOURCE - Peace Is Not The Word To Play (Wild Pitch/EMI) The Large Professor gets larger and

Mainsource continues to blow up. With inno- vative arrangements and lyrical schemes, the Mainsource promises to be this year's premire Rap act. "Peace..." attacks perpetrators who promote harmony and unity in your face, but once outside the arena become fat phonies. The album contains the cool remix, as this cut has the potential to become a club and mixshow smash. Contact Sincere at (212) 594 -5050, or Harry Fobbs at (212) 603 -4957. BAS

DIAMOND SHELL - Grand Imperial Diamond Shell (Cold Chillin'/Reprise) Diamond Shell returns with their funky, ab- stract, off -key flavor on this self titled arrange- ment. The melodic down beats and comical subject matter, courtesy of Cutmaster Cool V and The Biz, should appeal to Urban Radio. The Rick James' "MaryJane " music beds should spark some mid and upper -demo reaction. Contact Stephanie Flowers at (818) 953 -3211. BAS

"I've been very fortunate to have been surrounded by knowledge- able and innovative individuals early in my career by industry veterans like Eddie Sims and Danny Sims, and now as I

continue to grow I think it's my turn to share the experience for those coming up."

Ken Wilson's reflection is a description of both his business tactics and his personal demeanor. His introduction to the music industry came not only through his love of Rap and R &B music, but through his reputation for being a "people person." "I think most people will agree that the industry's most valuable asset is the interaction and commu- nication we exchange day to day," he said. "Sharing and creating ideas with my staff and the folks at radio is an item you can't price."

Ken's love of working with his peers stems from experiences with his early mentors who helped him get his first break. A 1986 Radio & T.V. Manage- ment graduate from Cal State Northridge, Ken worked with a local T.V. station as a camera- man while he was still a student. Exercising his love for music, Ken accepted a national promotion position at Beverly

01 WILSON IXEN WILSON

Senior National Director Of R &B Promotions Columbia Records Glen, which was offered to him by music veteran Otis Smith. By his senior year Ken had built a reputation within the industry and quickly became in demand.

In 1987, Tony Anderson, then VP of Arista Black Music, and Vaughn Thomas, then National Director Of Promo- tions Arista Black Music, gave Ken his first shot as West Coast Manager of R &B for Arista Records. From there Ken's career took off, and he notched the first number one record of his career. "It felt really good to know that my work contrib- uted to a number one Whitney Houston single," he confides.

Ken then accepted a position with Columbia Records as the West Coast Promotion Manger of R &B and Jazz. There he worked under Ruben Rodriguez and Eddie Pugh, and he quickly earned a reputation for being one of the industry's most promising up and coming young executives. Within a year he was promoted to Co-National Director of Promotion Columbia Records. "Being a pupil of bound -to -be Hall of Fame executives, has been the most vital part of my career," said Ken. "Otis Smith was one of the best promotion men in the business; is always supportive; Ruben Rodriguez is very creative; Doug Daniels is a strong leader; and Tony Anderson provided all the encouragement you could ask for." As he continued to produce winning results, Ken rapidly moved up the company ladder, and he earned the title Na- tional Director Of Promotion

R &B Music. Then in early '91, executive promotion vet Eddie Pugh moved Ken to the post of Senior National Director of R &B Promotion. Ken credits Pugh for providing him with all the right learning tools. "Pugh gives me the freedom to grow," he said. "He basically entrusts my decisions and keeps walking along with me, says Wilson." Wilson also largely credits Columbia Record's President Don Ienner for always being there. "There's more to it than putting together a winning campaign and getting adds. I

believe you have to look down the road. There's also more to it than talking about radio and records to your peers. A successful promotion executive is the one who looks out for people at both ends of the ladder. Following up on your word is the core of being successful, states Wilson."

Ken Wilson with KKBT staff and Kid Creole

At age twenty eight, Ken is one of the brightest industry executives. He's been instru- mental in bringing home number one singles from talented greats such as Mariah Carey, Public Enemy, Surface, Peabo Bryson, L.L. Cool J, C &C Music Factory, and Lisa Lisa &

Cult Jam. With a diverse artist roster that ranges from Tim Dog to Nice & Smooth, Ken

emphasizes that the Colum-

bia staff puts 150% effort behind their artists. "I stress time and time again, that when you work a record -Rap in particular -you have to know the facts and understand both the group and music in order to create an interest," he claims

Ken acknowledges that success would difficult without his stable of regional managers who have consistently kept their artists in good hands. "We have a terrific staff that I'm very proud of," he said. He also cites a stable personal life as a factor in his success. "Without having friends and

Ken Wilson with Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam

family being there to support me, my life wouldn't where it is. A tight and communicative family unit is vital -especially during transitional years."

Ken continued, "Sometimes winning and success can clutter your vision of life outside of the office, and that's why I believe that here at Columbia Records our staff works together as a family. We understand and learn from one another. I'm very grateful for being blessed and surrounded by good people. One thing I always remember is that you have to always look out for people both inside and outside of the industry." -By Brian Alan Samson

INSIDE URBAN

CAN YOU STOP TO SIGN? Peabo Bryson marched in Harlem's African- Ameri- can Day Parade recently, and stopped to sign autographs for the many fans who turned out. While riding the parade route in the SOny Music - sponsored float, Peabo sang his hit, "Can You Stop The Rain." MARIAH CAREY's "Emotions" holds on

with a slight edge on next week's #1 hopeful, JODECI's "Forever My Lady." If she wins, it'll be a first for Jodeci. Our Record To Watch gets an endorsement from Edward Sargent, WICB- Ithaca. P.M.DAWN's "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss" is his RTW and he says, "You're going to play it now, you're going to play it later, but yoú regoingtoplayiteventually." Paul Strong, WLOU -Louisville, makes GERALD LEVERT's "Private Line" his RTW, saying, "Great phones! 25 -54 women!" Rick Stevens, WCKX -Columbus, makes ROGER's "(Every- body) Get Up" his pick. He says, "It's slammin' and funky!" Earl Boston, WUJM- Charleston, makes SHANICE's "I Love Your Smile" his

RTW saying, "This is the female version of Johnny Gill -this girl is talented." Holly- wood Higgins, KRUS- Ruston, agrees, say- ing, "A great song that will leave you singing the song long after it's over." Dana Hall, WILD- Boston, says Shanice's release "...is a bonifide hit!" M.C. Jammer, KJMZ -Dallas, makes DIGITAL UNDERGROUND's "Kiss You Back," his RTW. He says, "It's cold bustin' on the old "Knee Deep" Parliament hype tip. Top ten requests first week out. Get busy, baby." George Martinez, KDKO -Den- ver, likes PATTI LABELLE's "Feels Like Another One." "This song proves that Patti can definitely change with the times. It has a very funky beat- something everyone should enjoy both listening and dancing to -look for it to go number one in Urban Radio." K.C. Jones, WVKO -Columbus, is looking at AT- LANTIC STARR's "Love Crazy" and he says, "For those 25+ stations, this one is right on the mark." Casey McMichaels, WVOI -Toledo, makes LISA STANSFIELD's "Change" his pick and says, "I call this the new and im- proved Lisa Stansfield, and it is as hot as a firecracker!" Thomas Bacote, V103- Atlanta, says they've been testing the new VANESSA WILLIAMS, "Comfort Zone" as an album cut and, "...the results are great. This smooth record is already testing well for us." Curtis Carter, WKGC- Panama City, makes D.J. JAZZY JEFF AND THE FRESH PRINCE, "Ring My Bell," his pick and comments, "This is a good end to 'Summertime' and it's getting requests." Ciao for now, Betty.

NEW RELEASES by John Martinucci

TEVIN CAMPBELL - Tell Me What You Want Me To Do (Owest /Warner Bros.) Finally a release from Tevin's debut album! Young Mr. Campbell has worked on Quincy's "Back On The Block" album, Prince's "Graffitti Bridge" album and most recently the "Boyz In The Hood" soundtrack. He's developing into quite a star, and by the sounds of this ballad with its "in your face" vocals, no one will argue that fact. Narada Michael Walden has been hard at work on this project and the result of this team is outstanding.

GLADYS KNIGHT -Meet Me In The Middle (MCA) "Meet Me In The Middle's" contemporary beats are right in there with the #1 single "Men," which means Gladys is poised to be on top again.

BRENDA K. STARR - If You Could Read My Mind (Epic) If you've played Tyler Collins, Martika, Debbie Gibson and /or Madonna, you're in luck. Brenda K. Starr has been out of sight for a couple of years, but has re- surfaced on a new label sounding really strong and peppy. The album version of "If You Could Read My Mind" from Brenda's "By Heart" album is not quite as spicy as the versions

CD available on the single -but any ver- sion reads crossover hit.

ED O.G. & DA BULLDOGS -.Be A Father To Your Child (PWL America /Mercury) Ed O.G. directs his next release toward men who don't take responsibility, for their actions. "A boy can make 'em, but a man can raise one," is one of many thoughts Ed O.G. expresses in this jazzy production about "the play without pay" attitude which leaves many women with the burden of being a single parent.

THE BRAND NEW HEAVIES - Stay This Way (Delicious Vinyl /Island) N'Dea Davenport's vocals are always a refreshing pleasure to listen to, and along with BNH's Funk /Jazz, gives this song a contemporary flare that's acceptable to today's young listeners. BNH will serve no single before its time -bank on it.

KEITH WASHINGTON - Make Time For Love (Owest /Warner Bros.) This suit -wearing, crooning, wooing bal- ladeer times this release just right, and he adds fuel to the fires of passion. Mr. "Kiss- ing You" has checked his busy schedule and makes a romantic plea for some extra- curricular activity in hopes of securing an- other hit. Remember, Daylight Savings Time ends next weekend. Evenings will grow longer, so give Keith some night play.

RADIO FOLKS

SOW FUNNY Al)! THEY?

On Purpose

he radio broadcasters of this great

land are a select and elite group of highly trained professionals upon whose weary shoulders rest the trust and faith of countless thousands. It is to our radio heroes that we turn for information, for entertainment, for enlight- enment, for the very knowledge that all is well and the world still turns. The men and women of radio who gladly accede to this weighty task are a proud, brave lot. Usually gifted, they are often learned. And a lot of them have really deep pipes. But are they funny? Well, through extensive research we have determined this: Sure, it's often unintentional; but yeah, they're pretty funny.

It was a lost bet that prompted JERRY TARRANTS' most hilarious radio moment. Jerry's debt involved deep humiliation. Hav- ing lost the bet to a fellow air personality at WWGZ in Lapeer, Michigan, Jerry had to make a musical appearance on the winner's show, singing, "I've Got Friends in Low Places." The good news is that Mr. Brooks has not yet filed a lawsuit. The bad news is that animal rights activists who heard the broadcast have accused the station of torturing a cat in the studio.

In Jefferson City, Missouri, KLKI's SCOTT WYNN was giving play -by -play for a local football game. The home team had possession deep in their own territory. The quarterback went back to pass and dropped back into his own end zone. The rush was on. And in the heat of the moment, Scott blurted, "Boy, he sure had to scramble to avoid taking a dump in the end zone." Many listeners phoned in repulsed. Still more phoned in amused. And a few phoned in to recommend Kaopectate.

TED ROSE from WTLQ /Wilkes- Barre, Pennsylvania survived this recent tongue acci- dent. Coming out of the new Roberta Flack/ Maxi Priest record, Ted back -announced them as "Roberta Flack and Maxi Pad." Hey, it was a sanitary slip -up and at least he didn't add, "for heavy days, when you're feeling 'not so

single -to 250 specially- selected media buyers around the country. JJ & the Blackhearts are set to begin their world tour on November 8 in Bangkok...Michael Jackson's white, crystal - beaded glove that was stolen from the Motown Museum in Detroit has been recovered by au- thorities and returned. Hammer offered a $50,000 reward to anyone who returned the glove to him. A special phone line had been set up by Hammer so the culprit could call in and make an arrangement for an exchange. More than 1,500 calls were recorded before the news came that the glove had been found...

Humanitarian Award winners Geezer and Ronnie James Dio

fresh.' " Paris, Texas has not been the same since

DON ROBERTSON ran a live remote via phone from inside the KBUS studio. There was a lot of static on the line and something in the gentner itself was causing trouble. After getting out of the remote cut -in and back into music, Don yelled down the hall to his engineer, "Adolph, this gentner is really f" #ked up. It sounds like sh!t " Just then the hot line rang. Don answered the phone and was told by his staff at the remote, "Do not say another word. We can hear every- thing." For whatever reason, the gentner wasn't disengaging, even when the mic pod was not in program. What Don learned is this: Treat every mic like it is live. Find out what the hell a "Gentner" is. And stay away from engineers named Adolph.

MARKESBJERG from Burlington, Vermont's WVMT is having a little trouble organizing his esses /S's. (Raise your hand if you know how to write the plural of "s." All right, hands down. Quit gloating.) My point is this: A recent attempt by Mark to direct listeners to a remote at the Food City Shopping Center emerged from his lips as, "Come on out to the Food Shiddy Sopping Center." Well, any self -respecting Ver- monter knows how to avoid shiddy sops when- ever possible. So Mark was fired. But before he left, he turned to his boss in righteous defiance and proclaimed, "You can take this sitty job, shir, and just sove it!"

But not all jocks are funny by accident. Let me rephrase that. Not all jocks will admit to being funny by accident; in fact, some even claim to be funny on purpose. We'll let you be the judge.

STEVEN O. SELLERS from the Rude Awak- ening Crew at KIOZ -San Diego says "Because of time shortages, the EPA has suggested we wipe out your Gerkin and Jam." And, "It's Vegetar- ian Awareness Month. Thinking of having a doughnut? Take a leek instead." Steven is full

of helpful hints. And that's just one of the things he's full of.

In Amarillo, Texas, KMML's DANNY WHITE saw Pee -wee Herman dolls on sale in an antique shop for $75. The next day, Danny commented on the air that, despite the recent Pee -wee infamy, he felt the dolls were a bit overpriced. Had they, however, been equipped with the "Big Adventure Action Grip Feature," sure, he would have gladly paid the 75 bucks. Thankfully, he didn't add, "Yeah, I'd sure love to see a doll come with that." (Well, maybe I've used the wrong verb in that sentence.)

RON ROSS from WOZZ -Appleton/ Oshkosh, Wisconsin brought tears of laughter to the collective eyeballs of Appleton - Oshkoshians when he announced that sidekick KITTY KASPER uses her Thigh Master even when she reads the news. Everyone seemed to know he was joking, which is why fellow staff- ers find it odd that while Kitty's on the air, Ron keeps crawling around under the console at- tempting to gather evidence that would sup- port his claim.

Residents of Missoula, Montana think it's pretty funny when KZOQ's SHAWN WILDE eats on the air. They enjoy Shawn's chewing, tooth -sucking and swallowing very much; how- ever, it's said by fans that his belching is an acquired taste.

Yes, radio people are funny people. And to prove this point conclusively, let's turn it over to MARK MURPHEE and "MISS ELLIE" from W MOX- Meridian, Mississippi, who believe that the best way to end my column is with a .357 Magnum. They have found that a gaping chest would takes the fight right out of a joke.

So, before I get too much blood on the page, gerkin and jam I must.

Fax your hopes, dreams, desires to Weezy at (213) 467-9540.

At Premiere Radio's recent "Live From Hollywood" remote,KDWB-Minneapolis' STEVE COCHRANsaidsome- thing funny to BOB HOPE. Maybe it was, "We're serving liquor in here, buddy. I'm gonna need to see some 1.D."

Shelby puts her mighty voice to an appeal- ing uptempo song and the result is magic. She sounds fully in control.

KENTUCKY HEADHUNTERS - Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line (Mercury) Waylon's 1968 classic is a natural for the Headhunters, and folks have been calling for this as a single release since the album came out. Just watch out for that blistering guitar.

SWEETHEARTS OF THE RODEO - Devil and Your Deep Blue Eyes (Columbia) This sounds like the Sweethearts we first fell in love with. The song was written by Russell Smith and Lee Roy Parnell, but the sisters make it their own.

ROY ROGERS & CLINT BLACK - Hold On Pnrtner (RCA) This magical pairing speaks for itself. The two debuted the song on the CMA awards show, so your audience has already had a chance to hear it. Just the first gem from Roy's "Tribute" album.

MARK O'CONNOR & THE NEW NASH- VILLE CATS - Bowtie (Warner Bros.) With two CMA awards under his belt (Mu- sician of the Year and Vocal Event of the Year), Mark O'Connor is on his way to becoming as popular with Country music fans as he is with Country music artists. This quick -paced instrumental is well worth a listen.

"IT'S BEEN A LONG TIME" -

SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY & THE ASBURY JUKES

(IMPACT) It has been a long time since Southside Johnny has had his arsenal of horns and guitars standing close by. Sounds like it's reunion time for a few fa- mous voices, including Bruce Springsteen. Southside's new album not only showcases his talent for singing great white R &B, but it brings together the New Jersey legacy of household names like Springsteen, Little Steven, Bon Jovi, Jukes and E Streeters. Such is the power of the boardwalk.

"PLAYING WITH FIRE " / KEEP COMING BACK" -

RICHARD MARX (CAPITOL)

Richard Marx chooses to give Album Radio their very own advance track. "Playing With Fire" is a rowdy cruncher that will fight off Marx's image as a balladeer. Ironically, more no- table is an uptown, slow tempo cooker, "Keep Coming Back," featuring Eric Johnson on lead guitar. Although this is the Top 40 single, we're getting a special Album Radio mix that maxi- mizes Johnson's participation. And Johnson doesn't take his appearance lightly. He rips out a tasty, economic solo at the 3:16 mark that steals the show.

"SOME PEOPLE" -

JAMES REYNE (CHARISMA)

The new Bryan Adams? Actu- ally, maybe something better as former Aussie Crawl lead singer James Reyne throws his hat back

in the rock ring with "Some People," a collaboration with, of all people, ex -Adams partner Jim Vallance. After a low profile American debut on the Capitol label two years back, Reyne is ready and punching for round two. While Australia is better known for its success with groups as opposed to solo spin -offs, one listen to the whole album reveals a beautiful recording with loads of radio potential -especially on a ballad called "Reckless."

TWO ROOMS -

CELEBRATING THE SONGS OF ELTON JOHN

& BERNIE TAUPIN (POLYDOR)

It's hard to over emphasize the impact Elton and Bernie have made as songwriters. This set is an artist's overview of the John/ Taupin craft as acts as diverse as Kate Bush, The Who, Sting, George Michael and Wilson Phillips choose their very own cover. More than a publishing ploy (PolyGram now owns a big piece of the Elton/Bernie catalogue), the renditions range from faithful to innovative. Surprisingly, Jon Bon Jovi sounds Billy Joelesque on his moving version of "Levon." Eric Clapton sounds at home with horns on "Border Song." Wilson Phillips do a full rendition of "Daniel" while Sting, God bless him, does one of my favorites, "Come Down In Time" off Tum- bleweed Connection. Alternative Radio will be zeroing in on Kate Bush's space reggaed "Rocket Man" while Sinead O'Connor's "Sacrifice" is aloof and buried. The Who contribute "Saturday Night's Alright" with a mystery drum- mer, perhaps Mr. Chips the ma- chine?

TROMPE LE MONDE -

PIXIES (4AD /ELEKTRA)

A bit of a power play ensues as

Black Francis takes over the writ- ing for, from a timing standpoint, what could the biggest Pixies al- bum of them all. While the band name may transmit dainty images, their music is all but that. These Pixies burn up the alternative air- waves with an aggressive sense of guitar warfare. As heard on trax like "Alec Eiffel" and "Head On" (yes, the same by the Jesus & Mary Chain), the Pixies approach is all guitars and back beat. If you tour the album via "Alec Eiffel," "Head On," "Bird Dream Of the Olympus Mons" and "Space (I Believe In)," you'll be spared some of the ex- cessive outside stuff. What you will hear is some great progres- sive flavoring for stations willing to risk reaching the hip student side of town.

THERE IS ALWAYS ONE MORE TIME -

B.B. KING (MCA) Each and every year B. B. King seems to be getting stronger. When he appeared here on his birthday, headlining a massive blues festi- val, there was pandemonium. As bluesman number one, he's had mainstream success with Top 40, underground radio, the vicious nightclub circuit, constant tour- ing and appearing with U2, he

now an commands almost God- father status to younger players like Robert Cray and the Alliga- tor gang. What also historically happens is that from time to time B.B. aims his music at a younger crowd. There Is Always One More Time, while it may not exactly inspire a rock revolution as Live and Well and Completely Well did during the seventies, is one of B.B. King's more rock friendly efforts. Trax: "Back In L.A.; " "I'm Moving On" and my fave, "Fool Me Once."

"SHOT OF POISON" - LITA FORD (RCA)

This one had a big week on the Top 40 side, and it's easy to hear why. It's got a smooth pop struc- ture that rockers like WBCN, KBPI, KUPD, KBQQ, WTJY and KOZE saw fit to add to their air sound. Looking for a slick slice of hooky rock n roll? Check out Lita Ford's suggestive lyrics. This one should have plenty of visual video reinforcement.

"ALL I CAN DO IS WRITE ABOUT IT" -

LYNYRD SKYNYRD (MCA)

Just as the Yes box collided with the band's newest recordings, Lynyrd Skynrd's past may col- lide with their present. "All I Can Do Is Write About It" comes from the band's upcoming boxed chronicle. It's a funky full band acoustic version of an early fa- vorite from the Second Helping album. Fans and rock n roll histo- rians will get a kick out the treat- ment, especially Ronnie Van Zant's virgin vocal.

Welcome New Gavin Album Reporter: MD Duke Michaels of WTJY -Taylorville,IL reports with an interesting list of estab- lished artists (Bryan Adams, John Mellencamp) to new artists (Pri- mal Scream, The Storm) to blues flavoring (John Lee Hooker, Charlie Musselwhite, Lonnie Brooks). Last week was pretty rough when, hot on the heels of a U2 single, came the news that Is- land Records decided to con- solidate with PLG. The good news is that HOWIE MIURA has been assimilated into the PLG umbrella, and although GLENN BOOTHE has been let go, he already has a few offers and is sorting out possibilities. WWCD announced this week

that INGLESIDE INVEST- MENTS has completed the pur- chase of the station, which means SBR in Denver will be consulting. Here's how they stand: DIRK DARK has been upped to APD, KELLY GATES continues as PD and BUZZ FITZGERALD as MD. New at WWCD is TERRY MOWERY, who comes aboard as GEN- ERAL MANAGER from cross- town Z Rock affiliate WRZR, where he held the same posi- tion. There's a new bi- monthly mu-

sic compilation/ magazine mak- ing its way to your desk. VOL- UME is a 78 minute CD with tracks by artists such as MEAT BEAT MANIFESTO, NITZER

EBB, KITCHENS OF DISTINC- TION, THROWING MUSES, THE SHAMEN, etc. If that weren't enough, each VOLUME comes with a 200 (or so) page booklet containing photos, artist profiles /interviews, reviews and other features. Spearheaded by publisher ROB DEACON (a former ABSTRACT MAGA- ZINE /SWEATBOX RECORDS employee) and editor ROBIN GIBSON (Deputy Editor for SOUNDS until it went under), VOLUME sounds like 78 min- utes of good fun! For more infor- mation, contact ROBERT WEYERSBERG at TRIAGE IN- TERNATIONAL: (212)349 -7533. And speaking of music,

SCHOOL OF FISH has released a new CD 5 featuring "King Of The Dollar." Included are some live tracks, including a killer ver- sion of GEORGE MICHAEL's "Father Figure." I never knew

that song was so good. Another awesome CD 5 comes

from TOO MUCH JOY, as an edited version of "Nothing On My Mind" hits your desk this week. Included on this one is the ever -popular (well, it was with me) song, "Drum Machine," taken from the band's first al- bum, Green Eggs And Crack. This song is hilarious -play it! I'm gearing up for New York -

hope you are, too.

THE DYLANS -

THE DYLANS (BEGGARS BANQUET /RCA) After releasing "Godlike," one

of the greatest singles of the year, The Dylans offer us one the grooviest albums as well. Their eponymous debut is a "love, love, love" inspired collection of '60s influenced pop gems that are la la lovely. Producer Stephen Street maintains a clean, uncluttered sound and keeps The Dylans from straying -I know they'll hate this -too far into "Charlatan ter- ritory." They say Colin Gregory is obsessed with The Beatles - John Lennon in particular, so he certainly learned from one of the best. From start to finish, these songs are so catchy it's damn near impossible not to be affected by them. Personal faves include "Planet Love" ( "I hear your tam- bourines inside my head, she said. I hang my star on you" gets my vote for one of the best lines-

onto as their anchors in music. They like blues, rhythm & blues, maybe some big band and Jazz stuff. So the combination, the al- chemy of it all is pretty interest- ing."

Bowie also likens the Tin Ma- chine concept to his work with Brian Eno during the late seven- ties on the crucially popular Low and Heroes albums.

"In a way, writing with Tin Ma- chine is very much like my forte back in the late seventies when I

was working with Eno. Tin Ma- chine isn't that different, except back then it was just me and Brian. This time around is kind of the same thing except with four people. And we share the money, which is terribly disappointing," he laughs.

"I'm playing rhythm guitar and sax a lot more. Quite a bit more - much more, in fact, than I've ever played before. I'll play sax on the tour. That's kind of exciting."

I remind him that he's talking to a wannabe saxophone player who's horrible at it.

"I'm a horrible sax player, too. But hey, have you ever heard (Roxy Music's) Andy McKay? We can hold our heads up in pride, believe me. But listen, whatever Andy did play, you must admit it was effective. That, in its own way, has a naivete to it -not dissimilar to what happened with the explo- sion of punk. It wasn't the virtu- osity that mattered. It's what you did with it. I'm a great believer in that anyway. If the atmosphere created is tangible enough, it's not the notes that you play, but the way that you play them."

There is a reference to the punk explosion, specifically the Sex Pis- tols on Tin Machine H's conclud- ing song, "Goodbye Mr. Ed." On that song, like most of the others, Bowie's poetry is less shackled, perhaps a reflection of the loose creative atmosphere he feels within the Tin Machine arrange- ment.

"'Never mind the Pistolslthey laid the Golem eyeslothers came to hatch them,' he quoted, "Deep and mys-

tical. Could I tell you what those lines mean? Unlike some of the other songs, I can, actually. The Golem was an ancient myth of the Czechoslovakian Jewish popula- tion. In times of trouble they cre- ated this man of mud, a huge monster of a man. And they put a large stone where his heart was. Once the stone was placed in po- sition, the Golem would go off and fight their battles for them. They would say his name three times. I had this fancy of the Pis- tols having created or given birth to the idea of the Golem again to fight the battle. Then it was left to others to actually. execute what they'd laid down in terms of new musical horizons -new socio- musical situations."

Quite a lot of information packed into a single couplet of verse.

"Yes," Bowie laughs, "I vacil- lated between the idea of music as destruction and the idea of capi- talism itself and the new world dream as a virtual self- destruc- tive force. The opening lines of that song also cites the Manhattoe tribe as having the land where the AT &T building is now built. Plus Indians -excuse me, American Natives -are employed as steeple jacks in New York. I think it's the Iroquois. I had vision of the ghosts of the original Manhattoes flail- ing into the wind as they fall off this monstrous shrine to capitol success."

That's a good example of Bowie's current lyric crop. As a poet, he's become ambitious.

"I try real hard. A lot of the couplets in that song do have some kind of intellectual bearing. It isn't just these fanciful meandering."

He catches himself and eases up.

"Kind of like a Wings Of Desire thing," he laughs, referring to the Wim Wenders' film about angels landing onto earth.

As Tin Machine begin to re- hearse for their own earthly tra- verse, an upcoming tour of small- ish venues, it's hard not to notice Bowie's lucky sense of timing. With the world economy still re- covering from the worldwide blues, there is no better to time scale back expenses and head out for a comparatively low tech ad- venture. Brilliance or veteran's luck?

"It would have been brilliant had I actually put the thought into it and planned it that way. I've been a purveyor of happy acci- dents. Every time I've wanted to change, there's been some atmo- spheric reason why I should do it. And it often used to be, climati- cally, not only what I needed, but presumably what other people needed, too."

Artistically, Bowie seems in a very good head space. He's ex- cited about the present and the future. He's just as satisfied with his past, specifically how Ryko, the small but mighty CD com- pany, has been chronicling all the RCA catalogue recordings.

"The Ryko reissues have been going great. I like them a lot. They're good guys. What I'm try- ing to do for next year is put out four albums that are particular personal favorites of mine. They might have no bearing on anyone who started with me during Let's Dance, but for others it might be a lot of fun. I want four distinctive kinds of albums. One will be just instrumental stuff plus some new out -of- the -vault things. It will be kind of a mood album."

As for the return of Ziggy, The Lodger and The Young American to the record bins, Bowie still views the project as a whole.

"The great thing will be when I

look back and see things docu- mented. Just for my own vanity,

Ryko came out on top as being the people who take the greatest care. Maybe their sales aren't as big as a Warner Brothers or something, but it's the kind of thing I'd like to see in ten years time. I can look back and say, yeah, that's my stuff."

With his long term obligation to EMI mutually dissolved, Bowie looks only at his association with Tin Machine -a totally different obligatory animal. He's a vocal- ist, rhythm guitarist and sax player earning an even split -25% of the take. Still, being in a band has its advantages over being a solo star, boss and lord of the farm. From a business standpoint, Bowie is what you could call -and please excuse the tired sports analogy - an unrestricted free agent.

"I was never good at making deals," he said, "I guess I don't have that Faustian ability. But you're right, I'm completely, ab- solutely and totally a free agent. It's a relief in that I don't feel obligated to anybody at the mo- ment except Machine itself. And that's a self -imposed obligation."

For now, Tin Machine seem to be on solid ground when it comes to Bowie's present agenda.

"There's a definite need to stay together. If we continue to get on like we're getting on at the mo- ment, we'll be doing a third al- bum. Then who knows? Maybe a fourth, fifth and sixth ?"

TOP - "NUMBER ONE DOMINATOR"

(ISLAND) Finally out domestically, here's the single you wouldn't -you couldn't -keep off the air. LIVE 105 has been on it for close to two months. Steve Masters says, "The first week out, it made our 'Screamer Of The Week,' and it's been researching really well since then. Check out the import 12" for the fold -out Norton Manx poster!" Meanwhile, on the other side of the country-you prob- ably wouldn't be too surprised that self- confessed anglophile Matt Pinfield already has Top in rotation. He says, "This record has exploded for us! The phones haven't stopped. 'Number One Dominator' is a cool combination of T -Rex meets The Soup Drag- ons. The advance tape has me convinced it will be one of the best late surprises of the year." I

couldn't have said it any better. LR

VELVET CRUSH - IN THE PRESENCE OF

GREATNESS (RINGERS LACTATE)

The Choo Choo Train's "Briar Rose" EP is one of my most trea- sured pieces of vinyl, so anything that members Paul Chastain and Ric Menck -now Velvet Crush - put their hands to, I want to hear. Guitarist Jeffery Borchardt com- pletes this trio responsible for some of the most exhilarating pop (a la The Shoes /Big Star/ Buzzcocks) this side of the big pond. A big, chunky guitar, fren- zied drums (heavy on the cym- bals) and melodic basslines meet alongside harmonized, almost whispered vocals and creates a classic, garage vibe. It says in the press release that the album was recorded on Matthew Sweet's (see review below) eight -track, which accounts for the rawness of the material, but I think the sound

could be cleaned up just a bit. Despite that, In The Presence Of Greatness highlights this trio's solid songwriting ability appar- ent in songs like "Ash And Earth," "Stop," "Window To The World," "Blind Faith" and "Speedway Baby." God, I love this band! LR

MATTHEW SWEET - GIRLFRIEND

(ZOO ENTERTAINMENT) Matthew Sweet is probably one of the most underrated American songwriters slugging it out to- day. After a short stay on Colum- bia, this Champaign, IL. native resurfaces on Zoo with a new al- bum titled Girlfriend. From the first track, "Divine Intervention," (also the single) to the end of the CD, Matthew's fondness for clas- sic '60s pop shines through. (I hear a lot of Beatles on this one- maybe Matthew should get to- gether with The Dylans' Colin Gregory! ?) So far, Matthew seems to be touted more by his fellow musicians than by the public at large, but hopefully Girlfriend will change all that. In the mean- time, the players on the album read like a musical "Who's Who " -Richard Lloyd, the afore- mentioned Ric Menck, Robert Quine, Lloyd Cole -well, you get the picture. Favorite tracks in- clude "Divine Intervention, " "I've Been Waiting," "Winona" (a bittersweet tribute Winona Ryder) "Evangeline" and "Don't Go." LR

CHRIS STAMEY - FIREWORKS

(RNA) Stamey's back, this time return- ing to the solo thang, but he's brought along a slew of famous people (and alternative old -tim- ers) for company. Anton Fier, Mitch Easter, Peter Holsapple, Faye Hunter, Don Dixon, Dave Schramm and Pete Buck all throw in their talents for this recording. Despite all the dressing, at the core remain Stamey's melancholy pop compositions rife with unex- pected chord progressions and bittersweet (but mature) hooks. Try the full -blown "The Company Of Light," the pretty acoustic "Glorious Delusion," "The New- lyweds" (a quiet story-song a la Nanci Griffith), the slightly struttin' "I Want You" or "On The Radio," a drivin- with -the-

windows- down- and -the -radio- blastin' anthem dedicated to Ray Davies. SEANA BARUTH

VOIVOD -

ANGEL RAT (MECHANIC)

Voivod releases their latest psy- chedelic vision of society with "Angel Rat " -a mixture of psychedelia and the groovy sounds of hard edged rock n' roll. Guitarist "Piggy" demonstrates his ability to rip chords to shreds while bassist "Blacky" keeps the beat with massive plucks that re- verberate endlessly, into the uni- verse. "Angel Rat" is apparently the bands reflection of the "Chaos Theory" which signals their search for the existential, influ- enced by the book "Chaos" by Gleick. This concept of the "Chaos Theory" and the content of Voivod's lyrics suggest the influ- ence of Russian and Irish folk- lore. What makes this album stand out from the others is Voivod's ability to go from full - on rock n' roll to obscure melo- dies seething with psychedelic nostalgia. "Nuage Fractual ", my fave, offers guitar melodies spin- ning submissively around a dark bass and the hypnotic vocals of Denis Belanger, better known as "Snake." With "Angel Rat" Voivod has once again made a great contribution to the alterna- tive /hard rock scene, a genre still struggling to receive recognition from alternative and college ra- dio. ROB FIEND

PIXIES - TROMPE LE MONDE

(ELEKTRA) "Trompe Le Monde" is a French expression that means deceive the world, and this latest Pixies gob- let is initially deceiving. After re- peated listenings I found many of the songs growing, sprouting, and taking root. The title track is a hypnotic trampoline of Kim Deal vocals bounding off spiraling guitars, and begs to be heard

October 18, 1991/the GAVIN REPORT

again. "Little Eiffel" scurries with the help of drums in the throes of a petit mal and resounding back- ground singing. When Black Francis talks "of the April birds and the May bee" on the anthemic "Umass," one can't help but envision what may or could be for the Pixie Genera- tionTM. "Space (I Believe In)" fuses Kim and Black Francis sing- ing with a thick, low riding bass and quenching guitars and the rockin' good cover of Jesus and Mary Chain's "Head On" ex- ceeds expectations. So many of the lyrics have double meanings and work on other levels that it brings to mind the origin of the word ecstacy. Derived from the Greek, it literally means to be beside oneself. Trompe Le Monde is an ecstatic effort that will leave you beside yourself. DAVID BERAN

RICHARD MARX - Keep Coming Back (Capitol) Touch that play button and it doesn't take long before words like "automatic" and "hit" start buzz- ing around the room. Exploring new musical terri- tory, Richard more than meets the challenge of matching his earlier work. Along with guest back- ground vocalist Luther Vandross, he casts a soul- ful spell and crafts a total package that will have listeners glued to their radios for weeks to come. The long wait between projects was clearly worth it.

COLOR ME BADD - All 4 Love (Giant /Reprise) So far, this amazing quartet is two-for -two, and this track will surely turn that stat into three -for- three. Okay, I'll admit it's tough to be objective about one of my choices for "New Group Of The Year" honors (neck- and -neck with Boyz II Men) and who are also responsible for my favorite song of the year, "I Wanna Sex You Up." Color me convinced -these guys are the goods. Already charted Top Ten at Q106 San Diego. Although a much slower tempo, I swear I heard the influence of the Blues Brothers' novelty hit, "Rubber Bis- cuit," in this tune.

MARKY MARK AND THE FUNKY BUNCH -

Wildside (Interscope /EWA) Young Marky was still in diapers when Lou Reed went to the top of the chart with "Walk On The Wild Side" in 1973. Using that cool groove as inspiration, he re- invents the song with a present day storyline relatable to millions across the coun- try. Early airplay includes WHYT 9 -8, B96 23 -20, KMEL 35 -28, POWER 9628 -20, KISS 108 debut #24, WAVA debut #23, KRQ 29 -25, Q106 debut #18 and HOT 97 debut #28.

LISA STANSFIELD - Change (Arista) Blending elements of Jazz, Pop and Dance is an art Lisa and partners Ian Devaney and Andy Moms perfected on their debut album, and now they take us to level two. If this lead -off single is any indica- tion, her soon -to-be- released album Real Love should cause an awful lot of excitement when it hits the street.

ROBBIE ROBERTSON - What AboutNow(Geffen) Enjoying and experiencing the moment is a phi-

losophy that requires reinforcement from time to time, and what better way to do it than through music. Best known for his work with The Band, Robbie's thought -provoking lyrics and musician- ship is bound to win the hearts and minds of those treasured upper demos. Very, very tasty.

GENESIS - No Son Of Mine (Atlantic) For awhile it seemed that just about every time someone turned on a radio a Phil Collins or Gen- esis song was either playing or would be in only a few short minutes. Now it's refreshing once again to hear him and his co-horts Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford putting out their original brand of Pop melodies highlighted of course by Collins' unmis- takable vocal.

R.E.M. - Radio Song (Warner Bros.) To their credit, this Athens, Georgia band didn't forget to thank their early supporters at College radio as they picked up honor after honor at the "MTV Video Awards" presentation last month. Now after finally achieving major commercial success, they poke a little fun at mankind's ulti- mate invention -THE RADIO!

MOTLEY CRUE - Home Sweet Home (Elektra) Rock bands have found their easiest access route to Top 40 via the power ballad. Though this isn't the first time this superstar contingent has used that vehicle, this song may well become their signature power ballad. Expect immediate re- sponse from programmers and the audience to this awesome entry.

THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS - Until She Comes (Columbia) Number One at Alternative radio not long ago, The Furs are ready to make their crossover assault on the wings of a carefully crafted and tender song for lovers. As is their trademark, the music creates an irresistible mood.

THE PARTY - In My Dreams (Hollywood) From the start, these five young talents got radio's attention with the track "Summer Vacation." Succes- sive releases set the scene for this effort, which is the group's hottest to-date. There's definitely a party goin' on and more and more of the public are going to RSVP.

BEVERLEY CRAVEN - Beverley Craven (Epic On the surface you'd think Beverley Craven ha: a lot of things working against her. Here she is,1 classically trained, sensitive female singer, songwriter performing pretty much piano -base( songs of domestic bliss and travail. This albun contains two singles that have already come an( gone in her native United Kingdom. To her credi it should be noted that she's a damn fine classi cally trained, sensitive, witty singer/ songwrite who bares striking aural resemblance to the leg endary Carly Simon. Beverley even employs tw( Simon associates -producer Paul Samwell -Smitl and mixer Frank Filipetti in an apparent con scious effort of emulation. And the two singlet PROMISE. ME and HOLDING ON, came an( went pretty far up the trendy pop charts of jolt. of England. Those two tracks distinguish th front end of the set and are followed by other currently lesser known gems like the heart-to heart possibilities of WOMAN TO WOMAN ant the elegant put -down of YOU'RE NOT TH] FIRST. I wouldn't expect this project to take adu] radio by storm, but it should survive the flavor of the month and mark the Stateside debut c someone important -a taste worth acquiring.
