Dear Friends
When we talk of stewardship we speak mainly of finances and timeenergy but what about
trust as an aspect of our stewardship Think about it When we ask you to give time or money
to the church we are also asking you to trust that this money and time is going to be put to
good use For the most part though the church leaves trust to an assumption Assuming that
we give trust with our offering is a mistake Since I have been a minister I have witnessed
congregations that simply do not trust each other When they give they give with suspicion
Yet for all of the harrowing stressful and anger-filled congregational and wider church
meetings I have attended negative feelings brought on by mistrust and misunderstanding -I
have not seen anyone address the trust issue as an issue between Christians and God We
talk a lot about faith but not about trust (There is a difference between the two I will
address this subject at a later date)
I am not sure why we ignore trust The Old Testament is a story of a constant wrestling of trust
ndash humans donrsquot trust God or each other and God doesnrsquot trust humans The constant
metaphor of Godrsquos relationship with human beings is that of a spouse committing adultery
From the story of Adam and Eve Cain and Abel Noah the Patriarchs Moses trust between
humans and God is dissected put back together and dissected again The Psalms are full of
questions about whether or not humans can trust in God The Book of Job is an extended
study of the trust between God and human beings The New Testament continues the
discussion of trust Disciples are pitted against the religious hierarchy ndash the Pharisees and
Sadducees The religious hierarchy is pitted against each other The disciples ndash even Peter
and Paul ndash fight with each other about issues of theology Even after God takes Himself out
of the argument by giving us his trust sacrificially and completely in Christ humans continue
to withhold their trust Arguments break out and schisms occur Jews kill Christians and
Christians kill Jews Christians kill Christians This distrust builds for centuries until the
Reformation blows the church apart like lava erupting from a volcano Thereafter for over
1500 years the distrust that we hold for each other creates and splits denominations until the
one Church of Christ has become over three hundred separate Christian churches Our
mistrust is so great that the appropriate metaphor for the Church is not a body but a single-
celled organism whose purpose for existence is to split
Since the eighties social scientists have studied Christians in America comprehensibly to find
out how members feel about their church and their participation in that church In reading
these reports two overwhelming facts emerge ndash(1) people are leaving the church because
they donrsquot see the church as having much relevance in their life and (2)young people who
were raised in the church are leaving because they see too much hypocrisy in the church
(the trend is ldquoWe are spiritual but we are not religiousrdquo) The lack of relevance comes as a
result in not having trust the charge of hypocrisy comes from witnessing this mistrust in action
In other words because of mistrust in each other and therefore in God we have become a
broken witness for God
As the story of the Bible underscores trust is the vital ndash indeed the critical ndash foundation of our
relationship with God However this trust is special and specific to the church In society we
learn that trust is a part of citizenship The individual carries the onus of trust in the social
contract it is my responsibility to earn your trust In the church the effort does not fall upon
the one who is to be trusted The story of God in history is that God is trustworthy
The story of God in Jesus is that God does not require us to earn His trust He has given it to us
through sacrifice and love It is now up to us to give our trust to God in the same manner
sacrificially and completely
Our stewardship becomes a vehicle for us to offer our trust in God Unlike stewardship in the
Old Testament as living out on obligation when we give to the church when we work in the
church everything we do is a way for us to say that we trust God to use us wisely When we
offer our trust in our fellow church members we offer our trust in God that He is using them
wisely
More often than not however we see Christians withholding their trust in God by withholding
their trust in the church Now it could be a misunderstanding If we think that the work of the
church its budget its leadership and its goals and plans are the work of the pastor or the
other church members then we understand the work of the church as a social contract
and so force the church to earn its trust from us Social contracts are fragile trust breaks
down and walls of distrust between church members grow thicker and thicker However if
we see that the work of the church our budget our leadership our goals and plans are the
work of God and that we as members are only instruments that God uses then we can
seen that our trust must be directed towards God
We can turn this around We have to believe that if we give money and time to the church
God will find a way to use it for His mission When we vote on our Ministries and Officers we
need to understand that our vote is an act of trust in God in believing that God has called
these people to this work When we place our trust in God and his work in our congregation
then we also have to trust that God is using us as an instrument in his mission even if we are
not serving on a Ministry or in an office This is why before we pledge our money before we
pledge our time stewardship demands that we pledge our trust in God
So as you offer your pledge be honest with yourself how much trust do you offer to God
How much is this trust reflected in your support of His mission through our congregation How
much do you trust God to use the officers and other members of the church to accomplish
good Consider this and then look at what you give both in money and in time If you are
not giving sacrificially and completely then it is time for you to re-examine your trust of God
(One note As always when talking stewardship this is not an issue of numbers it is always an
issue of sacrifice Some will give $1000 to the church and that will represent a huge
sacrifice others will not be able to work in the church but be fervent for the church in their
prayer life Like the parable of the widow offering her mite to the church our trust in God
must be sacrificial and must be complete ndash for that is the way that he offered his trust to us)

A THANKSGIVING PROCLAMATION
A blessed Thanksgiving to one and all The following is one of the finest Thanksgiving Day proclamations written by Wilbur Cross Governor or Connecticut from 1931 to 1939 He was a professor of English before he entered public office Herersquos the proclamation for 1938
As the colors of autumn stream down the wind scarlet in sumac and maple spun gold in the birches a splendor of smoldering
fire in the oaks along the hill and the last leaves flutter away and dusk falls briefly about the worker bringing in from the field a late load of its fruit and Arcturus is lost to sight and Orion swings upward that great sun upon his shoulder we are stirred once more to ponder the Infinite Goodness that has set apart for us in all this moving mystery of creation a time of living and a home In such a spirit I appoint Thursday the twenty-fourth of November a day of PUBLIC THANKSGIVING In such a spirit I call upon the people to acknowledge heartily in friendly gathering and house of prayer the increase of the season nearing now its close the harvest of earth the yield of patient mind and faithful hand that have kept us fed and clothed and have made for us a shelter even against the storm It is right that we whose arc of sky has been darkened by no war hawk who have been forced by no man to stand and speak when to speak was to choose between death and life should give thanks also for the further mercies we have enjoyed beyond desert or any estimation of Justice Freedom Loving- kindness Peace ndash resolving as we prize them to let no occasion go without some prompting or some effort worthy in a way however humble of those proudest among manrsquos ideals which burn though it may be like candles fitfully in our gusty world with a light so clear we name its source divine

HELP US HONOR OUR CHURCH MEMBERS
Not all of our church members can come to church Through no fault of their own circumstances force them out of the church building Over the years we have labeled them ldquoShut-Insrdquo or ldquoHomeboundrdquo to identify them but the labels themselves end up isolating them from our fellowship What we want to know especially when we cant get to church is that our fellowship is not bound by space We want to know that as a part of this congregation we belong together as a family To help people who cannot come to church feel a part of our family we are asking you for three things Remember them in your prayers Send them a note or card letting them know that you are thinking of them
If possible call them to say Hellordquo This month we are lifting up two of our members
Joyce Horn and Donna Krueger You will find their
addresses listed above Let them know that they are a part of our family and that they are missed and thought about

About CCA and the UCC
