PiersEngineers in Victorian England loved a challenge. Building a pier was quite a challenge, but they built more than 100 in different seaside towns. Piers were tourist attractions. Doctors recommended salt water and sea air for people’s health, so they enjoyed walking along the pier while breathing in the healthy air. Orchestras played, people danced in ballrooms and there were many games machines. But piers also had a practical purpose – they allowed boats to land passengers when the tide was low and reaching the shore wasn’t possible. The longest pier ever constructed was at Southend-on-Sea. It’s still there today – all 2,158 metres of it.
Brighton Pier is the eighth longest at 536 metres. It is one of 55 piers that remain around the coast of Britain today. Piers are still very popular with visitors, but do not match the two million people a year who visited Brighton Pier in the 1920s. As people have chosen to go abroad on holiday, there is less interest in British seaside resorts. Many piers have closed down and several have been destroyed by fire.
