In 2010, Sandra Bullock celebrated her Golden Globe win with then-husband Jesse James by her side. Their marriage ended soon afterward, but Sandra – now a mother to one-year-old Louis – made a triumphant return in a stunning pale-pink gown by Jenny Packham. While the dress boasted beaded detailing and an elegant train, Sandra says she chose it for its comfort. ‘I could walk in it and I can sit in it and I felt like myself.’ Arriving solo to the event, the actress also squashed rumours that she is dating actor Ryan Reynolds, with whom she celebrated New Year’s Eve. ‘He is not my lover,’ she said, adding that the news would no doubt spark a ‘collective sigh among women.’

e ach year, the Golden Globe Awards kick off the red-carpet award season with supreme glamour – and this year’s ceremony proved no exception, as

the crème de la crème of the film and television world arrived in shimmering gowns and stylish tuxedos to light up the night with their star power. But the 68th annual ceremony also brought with it a sense of rebirth and joyful new beginnings for some of Hollywood’s top talent. Sandra Bullock, last year’s winner for best actress in a drama, returned in splendid style, wearing a pale-pink beaded, asymmetrical Jenny Packham dress and debuting a new haircut. It was no doubt an emotional time for The Blind Side actress, 46, who just last year had celebrated her victory with then-husband Jesse James, telling him in a moving acceptance speech, “my life got better when I met you.” Just weeks later, he admitted to infidelity and the couple ended their marriage. Showing true grit, brave new mother Sandra displayed no signs of

strain as she walked the red carpet of the Beverly Hills Hilton alone. In fact, she seemed happier than ever, speaking gleefully of her life with Louis, the one-year-old son she adopted in New Orleans last year. “I miss him,” said Sandra. “This is my first time away. I’m having trouble.” The beautiful actress also took the oppor-tunity to address rumours that she is dating newly single Ryan Reynolds, her Canadian co-star in 2009’s The Proposal. “I think there will be a collective sigh among women across the United States when I say he’s not my lover,” she said in a faux-dramatic drawl.

Above: Brad and Angelina’s arrival on the red carpet brought the loudest cheers from fans gathered outside the Beverly Hills Hilton Hotel. Opposite: Always a style star, elegant Angelina didn’t disappoint in a Versace gown covered with Swarovski crystals, which she paired with delicate emerald earrings. The couple, who have six children, stayed close to each other throughout the evening. They happily posed with friends Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones (left) in the ballroom and Brad kept a protective arm around Angelina as she reapplied her lip gloss (above, centre) while taking in the ceremony.

“He’s just an amazing friend for 10 years … but I don’t get his loving after dark!” Added Sandra, “[Louis is] the only man in my life right now – and that’s all I can handle!” Also making a triumphant ap-pearance after a painful year was Michael Douglas, a best supporting actor nominee for Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. Just days earlier, Michael, 66, had announced that he is tumour-free after a battle with throat cancer. “This is one of the nights you really smell the roses,” he said. “Being able to come to this thing cancer-free is pretty special.” Hand-in-hand with his wife of 10 years, Catherine Zeta-Jones, 41, Michael appeared happy, healthy and eager to embrace life – and his wife – with a new zeal. “Cather-ine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas really seemed to have fallen in love all over again,” eTalk host Ben Mulroney told Hello! exclusively after encountering the handsome pair on the red carpet. Looking as beautiful as always, Catherine made a sweeping state-ment in a gorgeous green Mo-nique Lhuillier gown. Through her choice of colour, the football

enthusiast was supporting her favourite team, the New York Jets, who were playing during the ceremony. “Some people call it emerald, but I call it Jets,” she said, smiling. Michael and Catherine weren’t the only ones feeling grateful that the actor was healthy enough to attend the Golden Globes. As the cere-mony drew to a close, the Oscar winner took to the stage to present the final award of the evening, best picture – drama (a prize won by The Social Net-work). As soon as Michael emerged, the audience of his peers rose to their feet and filled the theatre with lengthy, heartfelt applause. “There’s just got to be an easier way to get a standing ovation,” said a visibly moved Michael, who also thanked his wife and children

for their support during his red-carpet interviews. With its informal atmos-phere – guests freely come and go from tables laden with bot-tles of champagne – the Gold-en Globes gave Michael and Catherine the opportunity to reunite with countless friends. Among them were Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who posed for photos with them inside the ballroom, which boasted 30,000 Swarovski crystals on-stage and around the room. Earlier, the dazzling couple had arrived on the red carpet arm in arm, walking straight to the stands so they could chat with their many admirers. “When Brad and Angelina walk the carpet, the tone and intensity of the cheers jump up a notch or two,” shared Ben. Angelina, 35, who was

‘the very best thing of all has been my wife livia and all the beautiful things she’s given me’ COLIN FIRTH

It was a winning evening for Colin Firth (with wife Livia, above). In his moving acceptance speech, the best actor in a drama winner (above, right) praised Livia as well as his ‘supernaturally talented fellow cast members.’ The best actress in a drama winner, mom-to-be Natalie Portman (far right), thanked her fiancée, Benjamin Millepied (right, with Natalie), for ‘helping me continue ... creating life.’

Gowns at this year’s Golden Globe Awards were all about drama and detail. Left to right: Halle Berry got pulses racing in a

black satin Nina Ricci dress with a sheer train; Olivia Wilde was party- perfect in her Marchesa ball gown with a Midas touch of an accent – sparkling golden Christian Louboutin platforms; newly single Eva Longoria radiated

sophistication in a sweeping Zac Posen; Julianne Moore was bold in her asymmetrical pink Lanvin dress with gold accessories.

Best actor in a TV drama nominee Jon Hamm (far left, with his longtime girlfriend, Jennifer Westfeldt) gives his dapper Mad Men character Don Draper a run for his money in a sharp navy suit; his onscreen wife, January Jones (left), always a red-carpet risk taker, shines in a cut-out Versace dress designed just for the occasion. The newly single star – she just split from comedian Jason Sudeikis – recently signed to represent Versace’s spring/summer accessories line. A dapper Robert Downey Jr., (above, in a grey Prada suit with wife Susan), presented the award for best actress in a movie comedy and had the audience in stitches as he offered tongue-in-cheek advice on how to succeed in Hollywood. (Hint: it involves dating him.) Right: New American Idol judge Jennifer Lopez put her best foot forward in a white Zuhair Murad dress with $5 million worth of Harry Winston jewels. Her husband, Marc Anthony, wore Gucci.

After forgetting to mention him when she won an Emmy last summer, Temple Grandin star Claire Danes (left, in Calvin Klein) said ‘I love you, I love you, I love you,’ to husband Hugh Dancy (below) as she accepted the trophy for best actress in a miniseries. Right: Anne Hathaway makes an eye-catching entrance in a backless amber Armani Privé gown). nominated for best actress in a comedy for The Tourist, eventually lost out to Annette Bening of The Kids Are All Right. Still, Angelina was a style winner in a draped em-erald Versace gown with Swarovski crystals almost the same colour as her cat-like eyes. “My girls are always happy about me getting dressed up,” said the mom of six from the red carpet. Brad obviously approved of his wife’s glamorous appearance too, and the couple snuggled together – with Angelina fixing Brad’s tie at one point – throughout the ceremony, which was hosted by British funnyman Ricky Gervais. The A-list couple were no doubt pleased to watch as Brad’s director from The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, David Fincher, notched up four awards for his film The Social Network, including best picture – drama and best director. Best actor in a drama, however, went to Colin Firth for The King’s Speech – and the 50-year-old British star had the audience in stitches with his humorous acceptance speech. “To get to this stage of your life with your dignity and judg-ment intact can be somewhat pre-carious,” he said. “Sometimes all you need is a bit of gentle reassur-ance to keep you on track, but right now this [award] is all that stands between me and a Harley

Davidson.” Colin’s tone turned serious when thanking his wife of 13 years: “The very best thing of all has been Livia and all the beautiful things she’s given me. I think I can cope at just about any age as long as I still see her.” Mom-to-be Natalie Portman, 29, (in a pink satin Viktor & Rolf gown with Swarovski crystal rose detail) also kept the audience enthralled as she accepted the best actress in a drama trophy for her turn in Black Swan. Natalie movingly thanked her mother and father for “bringing me into this world and giving me such a wonderful life.” But it was her new fiancée, Black Swan choreog-rapher Benjamin Millepied, who brought out her mischievous side. “You may remember him [from the film] as the guy who, when they ask, ‘Would you sleep with that girl?’ he’s like, ‘No,’ ” she said. Grinning, she added: “He’s the best actor – it’s not true, he totally wants to sleep with me!” For many of the stars, there was only one way to top off a ceremony filled with triumph, tributes and laughter: by heading off to enjoy the rest of the night with Holly-wood’s finest at one of the many post-Golden Globe parties!

Glee was the big winner of the night in the television category. (Above, the cast celebrates the victory as a group.) The musical mega-hit took home three awards, including the best supporting actor in a TV series trophy for Chris Colfer. ‘It means the world to me,’ he said after his big win. ‘I remember watching the show when I was eight and printing out the prediction ballots and passing them out to my friends and family who didn’t really care.’ His co-stars were equally excited for the actor; Lea Michele (right, in a pink Oscar de la Renta gown) cried tears of joy over his win. Castmate Corey Monteith took to his Twitter page to announce his excitement: ‘Chris Colfer wins the Golden Globe,’ he wrote. ‘Go Glee!’ The show’s Jane Lynch (above, far R) took home the Globe for best supporting actress in a series and joked that she was ‘falsely humbled’ by the honour. Left: Canadian singer Justin Bieber debuted a new hairstyle and won over red-carpet repor-ters with his charm. ‘It was interesting to see Justin Bieber walk a carpet populated by film and television icons,’ eTtalk host Ben Mulroney tells Hello! Canada exclusively. ‘It was so new to him, he seemed almost shy – odd for one of the world’s biggest pop stars. He was an absolute gentlemen to the press on the red carpet.’ Far right: Newly single Black Swan star Mila Kunis won major fashion points with her stunning green one-shouldered Vera Wang dress.

anyone sees that, please give it back to me’ ‘GLEE’ WINNER CHRIS COLFER
