The Cougars are coming off three wins at the Kleberg Bank College Classic in Corpus Christi, Texas, while the Cardinals lost two to Central Michigan and defeated Prairie View last week at home. BYU head coach Mike Littlewood is starting his seventh season at the helm. Littlewood currently has a record of 184-145 (.559) with the Cougars and has led them to two WCC championships (2016, 2017). The Cougars are 1-1 all-time against Lamar but haven’t played the Cardinals since two matchups in the 1979 NCAA Tournament. The Cougars lost to Lamar, 3-2, before defeating the Cardinals, 7-4, later in the regional. The Cougars return 14 players who saw playing time in 2018. They welcome 17 newcomers (12 true freshmen and five transfers), not including four players who have rejoined the team after serving two-year missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The BYU bullpen has been stellar this season, allowing zero runs in six of the Cougars’ seven contests. Outside of the game against Cal, BYU’s bullpen has recorded no runs and 24 strikeouts with just 10 hits and six walks for a 3-1 record and a save in 25.1 innings pitched. Sophomore Easton Walker has allowed no runs and just one hit in 9.0 innings in relief. The Cougars currently rank 19th in the nation in fielding percentage among schools who have played seven or more games.
