Fall 2018 | BYOD Taskforce Faculty Survey
BYOD SOFTWARE & COMPUTER LAB INFORMATION
The Office of Strategy Management and Institutional Effectiveness
Software and Lab Information Report | 1
STUDY OVERVIEW
INTRODUCTION The Office of the Provost created a taskforce entrusted with supporting students with their software
requirements through providing access on an anytime, anywhere basis. A form was sent out to all
departments to collect information on all software and lab use in order to help the taskforce make
informed decisions about open access.
METHODOLOGY This survey was designed and conducted by the Office of Strategy Management and Institutional
Effectiveness through emailing 41 members of faculty representing each department and school at AUC.
Invitations were sent out on September 24, 2018, followed by two reminders on the 17th of October and
the 12th of November to those who had not yet completed the survey. The survey was eventually closed
on the 17th of January 2019, yielding a total representation of 26 departments.
REPORT STRUCTURE This report is divided into the following sections:
Report of Findings Divided into the following sub-sections:
1.1 Represented Departments A presentation of schools and departments that have participated in this survey
1.2 University-Level Software Uses An overview of all university-level software uses.
1.3 Department-Level Software Uses A breakdown of the specific software and lab uses of each department, grouped first by school

1.2 University-Level Software Uses The majority of participating departments have software requirements.
By Function Out of 140 mentions for kinds of software, the top functions are expectedly engineering and data
analysis and visualization, followed by multimedia tools such as Adobe Suite.
By Corporation/Developer While most software are fragmented, several are provided by the same developer. Out of all identified
corporations/developers, the top are Adobe and Microsoft, followed by IBM, AutoDesk, and Apple,
among others.

•I think the initiative will be good to give access to basic
tools (MS Office, drawing programs, pdf creator, etc) to students. We won't be able to make the specialized software
in petroleum engineering available to the students.
