Get your “Mutz” on January 26thJanuary 2014
By Theresa Howard
Six Hoboken eateries will face off for the annual Mutzfest on January 26th, 2014. The event, which kicks off a week of area Super Bowl events, runs 2 pm – 5 pm at
the Elk’s Club. Mutzfest brings together the community and local businesses to see who really has the best “mutz” in town.
This year’s event promises to be even more fun than the inaugural event with live entertainment, a cannoli-eating con-test, a Frank Sinatra karaoke and trip to Italy giveaway.
The eateries will provide more than 500 pounds of fresh mozzarella for guests to sample their homemade mozzarella. We expect more than 700 people. Defending champ M&P Biancamano will be on hand to win back the People’s Choice and Critic’s Choice awards.
Attendees get one voting chip with their ticket and choose their favorite mozzarella in the People’s Choice Award. A panel of celebrity judges will pick the winner for the Critic’s Choice.
Tickets will be on sale for $20. Children under 12 are free. For more information visit www.mutzfest.com. Limited advance tickets will be available for HFA members only before the on-sale ticket date. Stay tuned for the on-sale date, coming soon. Sponsorships are available. If you would like to be a featured sponsor please contact: Theresa Howard [email protected] or Shana Lee [email protected]

Considering Camp For Next Year?Get A Jumpstart This Winter!
Believe it or not, most parents start to think about camp in August! It is never too early to start planning next summer’s camp plans. Hoboken offers many good local options for camp. However, if you are looking to get out of the City, we are lucky enough to have a bunch of camps that offer bus service. While some are closer than others, they all offer amazing opportunities that City kids don’t get. Some of these out of town day camps will give you last year’s tuition rates or a small discount if you sign up before the end of the summer or even as late as December or January. It doesn’t hurt to ask for a small discount.
Choosing the right program for your family takes time and should not be a last minute scramble as June approaches. It’s best to visit the camp while in session, but if the summer is over, all camps host open houses during the fall and winter months. In fact, the directors will probably give you more time in answering your questions and concerns when they are not actively working summer hours! Of course one of the best ways to research your camps is to speak to current campers and camper parents. They love to share their experiences while it is fresh in their minds from the summer.
Almost all summer programs will provide you with the names and con-tact information of camp references. Parents can give you a different per-spective than camp directors. Parent feedback can be objective enough about how their own child has changed while at camp. And you never know, you may hear something negative that you wouldn’t have heard from the camp. When asking for names from the camp, it’s best to get campers with children similar ages to yours.

Located in North Jersey just 40 minutes from Hoboken!
The questions to ask vary greatly from family to family. My concerns may be very different from yours. If you need a place to start, here are a few basic questions:• Why did you choose this camp?• How long is the bus ride from Hoboken? Is there a main stop or do
you get picked up at your door?• Do they provide lunch? Can you order lunch if not provided at the
camp? How do they treat food allergies?• What do you think of the facilities? • Is the pool clean and well staffed? Is there a separate pool for non
swimmers? Is there a deep water test?• What are your impressions of the staff? How old are the staff members?• Do you have any frustrations with the program?
One quick conversation can make all the difference in the world. You should also know that some camps offer referral discounts. It’s a nice way to thank camp families for referring friends.
Still, the best way to get to know the camp is by speaking to the camp directors, which can take two months if you are going to visit all their cam-puses. There are about ten camps that offer bus service from Hoboken. The shortest ride is about 35 minutes and the longest ride can be upwards of an hour and a half with traffic.
There is good news on the horizon though. All these camps are coming to Hoboken to meet you! They will all be at our HFA Cabin Fever event in February. t’s the best way to weed out a few and schedule tours with oth-ers. This is a great opportunity to meet everyone in one place instead of heading out to ten different camps every weekend!
We are expecting Girl Scouts of America Camp Oval, Camp Riverbend, Deerkill Daycamp, Deer Mountain Day Camp, Harbor Haven Day Camp, Harbor Hills Day Camp, LakeView Day Camp, Spring Lake Day Camp, Willow Lake Day Camp and Vacamas Day Camp.
Hope to see you there!!

Volunteer With HFA!By Shana Lee
The Hoboken Family Alliance (HFA), a 100% volunteer organization, is growing in members and to help this growth we need your help! We are searching for a new EVENTS co - director. This is a shared position. This is a great way to get involved in the Hoboken community. Having a board position on your resume is a great addition as it shows commitment, strong interpersonal skills, and ability to execute projects. All positions are volun-teer and we ask for at least a one year commitment. As a Board Director, you would meet monthly with other HFA Directors to help plan and execute the organization’s mission and vote on issues affecting HFA. Presence at these meetings and HFA events is instrumental in helping with HFA’s suc-cess. An ideal HFA Board candidate should have the availability to dedi-cate some time each week to fulfilling their responsibilities to the board and to the position.
If you would like to be considered, send a brief email summarizing your experience and interest in the position to the email listed below.

DEVELOPING THE FOUNDATION FOR A LIFETIME OF SCHOOL SUCCESS!
Stay Healthy This Cold & Flu Season With Acupuncture and Herbal RemediesBy Ariele Myers L.Ac
Cold and Flu season is officially upon us. Flu shots are being offered everywhere from Target to our children’s school nurse’s office. What many people don’t realize is that there are many ways to help boost your immu-nity and ward off pathogens before you get sick.
TiPS To STAY HEALTHY THiS FLu SEASoN:
1. When our body’s defenses are weakened, whether from stress, poor diet or lack of sleep, we are more susceptible to invasion from foreign pathogens, and less able to “bounce back” once we do get sick. Acupuncture and herbal remedies can strengthen your immunity, both so that you can avoid getting sick altogether, and recover much more quickly if you do become ill. While it is best to begin boosting your qi with acupuncture and herbs before flu season is upon is, any treatment is better than none!
2. Health and immunity actually stems from our digestion. When our digestive organs are strong, we are easily able to absorb all the nutrients from our food and send it out to the rest of our body. Of course, eating food with actual nutrients is a big part of the equation!! Clean, minimally pro-cessed foods are essential to keep our body healthy. If you do have diges-tive weakness, Acupuncture strengthens your digestion, and there are many herbal remedies that an acupuncturist can prescribe to help as well. Probiotics and digestive enzymes are also extremely helpful to assimilate the food you eat. If your immunity has been low, or you feel like you have been plagued by constant colds, I highly recommend reducing or even eliminating gluten and dairy from your diet, at least for the cold/ flu season.
3. Your lungs are your first line of defense against pathogenic organ-isms, so it is imperative to keep your lungs strong. If you smoke, do what-ever you can to stop. Smoking is a sure-fire route to diminished health. Minimize inhalation of environmental toxins: avoid chemical cleaning prod-ucts and exposure to other chemical fumes.

4. The reality is that, no matter how healthy you are, there are a lot of germs that we come in contact with daily. Hand washing is essential, and I swear by Thieves Oils. Thieves is an anti-microbial blend of essential oils of clove, cinnamon bark, rosemary, lemon and eucalyptus, and has been proven to be 99.9 percent effective at killing airborne bacteria.
iF You Do GET SiCK….
It’s important to recognize that symptoms such as fever and chills are your body’s way of letting you know your immune system is functioning. A fever indicates that their body is fighting off whatever has invaded. Fever medication does reduce the symptoms, but it actually also stops your body from “burning off” the bug!
Below are some natural remedies and tips for fighting colds and flu:
Fever:• Cool bath with drops of lavender or lemon essential oil, or even lemon
juice• Sip water or chamomile tea with lemon and honey (for children over
12 months old)• Steam or humidifier with detoxifying essential oils: lavender, clary sage,
rosemary, eucalyptus, clove and tea tree (Such as Thieves Blend)
Colds:• Keep food intake light… reduce sugar, dairy, starches and meats.
Garlicky and Gingery Broths and vegetable juice, lemon water are best.
• For sore noses, you can rub a drop of coconut butter on the inside of each nostril.
Sore Thoat:• Warm water or chamomile tea with lemon and honey• Make your own herbal honey: Mix a drop each of mint, sage, eucalyp-
tus and lavender with a few tablespoons of honey. Mix well and give by the teaspoon.
• Slippery Elm lozenges• Chewable zinc Lozenges with Vitamin C
Earaches:• You can make your own Garlic Oil by putting a few cloves of garlic into
olive oil and infuse for at least a week. Remove the cloves, and warm a teaspoonful when needed and pour into the ear.
• You can buy a pre-made Garlic Ear OIl at most health food stores.• I like to add powdered probiotic into either of the above before using.
In terms of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), antibiotics have a very cold property, which makes them effective in clearing heat and reducing inflammation (thus killing bacteria). But that same cold property weakens the digestive function and can ultimately reduce immunity.
When herbs are used to treat infection, however, the pathogen is not only destroyed and inflammation reduced, but the herbs can also simulta-neously resolve phlegm as well as support the digestive function, and preserve the body’s defensive qi (immunity) to prevent recurrence.
