Oneof the surprising thingsabout beinganEditor is where the stories come from. InAugust I received an email via RhysBeynon fromaFrench lady calledSandrineAvon who lives in Montbéliard near Doubs. She was cycling along the Canal Rhône-a-Rhin, about 10 miles south of Besançonwhen she spotted a narrowboat emergingfrom the Thoraise tunnel and took in herown words, some ‘beautiful pictures’. Aftersome detective work on the internet shefound out that the owners of JeremusPiscator were Tony and Doreen Davis ofthe BBC and with the help of By The Weywas able to share the pictures with them. Itturned out that Tony’s daughter and son-in-law were on the boat at the time and Tonywas amused to see that the towpathtelegraphgot so far afield. This explainsourcover picture this month. Incidentally theThoraise tunnel contains surprisingfeatures such as waterfalls and lightdisplays - no ordinary tunnel! As I write, Ibelieve Jeremus is travelling up the RiverSaone.

No doubt many of you have been followingthe stories of our members and friends’adventures this summer on Facebook, butfor those of you not online I hope to giveyoua flavour ofwhat hashappenedso far in thisissue.

I must apologise to Adrian for omitting hisname from the list of Committee memberspublished in the last editionespecially ashehas done such sterling work in the Clubover the summer months. He deserves amedal (I think I see it on page 7)

For those of you who like me are DIY ortechnology fans we are starting a newtheme - ‘my favourite gadget’ If you have afavourite gadget that makes your boatingeasier then why not share it? You can findthe latest on page 6.

Canoeists! Love or hate?

After encountering 100 canoes comingupstream round the bends at Dapdunerecently, and being told to slow down eventhough I had already done an emergencystop in the bushes, what is the rule aboutright of way on the river? Maybe some ofour canoeing members could enlighten meplease?

Do PLEASE continue to send me yourpictures and stories, if you are posting onFacebook please remember to send mecopies of your best pictures too. It is betterto have toomuchmaterial than not enough!

I hope you have an enjoyable boating yeareven if the weather has not been wall-to-wall sunshine. But it isn’t over yet and I’msure there is still some time for cruisingbefore winter settles upon us.

2017 – a challenging year on many frontsbut one in which we have alsoaccomplishedmuch aswell. The uncertaineconomic situation has and is undoubtedlygiving us a headache. I’m afraid with therise of inflation it will go on to cause you

something similar as our mooring andlicence fee increases have to increase byinflation and a margin beyond if they are tocontribute to help fund the necessarymaintenance and operational workrequired to keep the waterway open andnavigable.

During the year we have, as you know, replaced lock gates at Thames andBowersLocks. This winter gates will be changed atCoxes and Newark Locks with principalengineering surveys being undertaken atthe same time. These engineeringinspections, such as the one recently

completed at Bowers and Old Bucks Weir, provide the information and knowledgeregarding the state of these assets to allowus to plan and schedule future (expensive)refurbishment or replacement projects andmake surewehave the funds in place at theright time to pay for the work.

Bank works have been undertaken atvarious locations including a long sectionfromByfleet Boat Club to the railway bridgeand the once popular stopping point justabove Walsham Weir. We have begun aprogramme of re-steel sheeting locklanding bays where the existing works arefailing and, where possible, incorporatingportage points for non-powered craft toimprove access (and before you ask –British Canoeing pay a substantial amountof money each year to fund their memberspaddling on the waterway !). With changesat New Haw we will, over winter, work onproviding improvedaccess to the elsanandwater points at the southernM25 end of themooring line. We also hope to improve theoperation of the sanitation station atGodalming by removing two ninety degreebends in the outlet pipe discovered afterCCTV survey !

Invasive species continue to trouble us.Where possible Himalayan Balsam has, andcontinues, to bepulled. This doesworkand has a great effect in the areas where itis removed, but has to be repeated eachyear. Floating Pennywort has had abumper year due to theweather conditions.NT staff and volunteers are activelyworking on preventing this from spreading

above Newark Road Bridge area toPapercourt. We are working with the EAwhoplan to spray fromWalsham toNewarkRoad Bridge – they had a little difficultyapplying to themselves for a sprayinglicence……. Our contractor has continued'potting' American Signal Crayfish to greateffect.

Looking to the future we are working ourway through the NT procurement and largeproject process with the aim to startdelivering our Channel Dimension work in2018–dredging. Weknowwhatwewant todo and where, we just now need to getthrough the bureaucracy to do it, easiersaid than done. The Environment Agencyis still working on their large project toupgrade various EA assets along thewaterway, mainly weirs but some bridgesas well. This may mean some towpathdiversions in some places for as long as 16weeks. Wewill hopefully knowmorebefore

Christmas.

Dapdune Wharf has had an even betteryear than last which is fantastic as this inpart helps fund our ongoing maintenancework. Our team of staff and volunteers aredelivering great visitor experiences and ourschools work is really taking off and

introducing lots morepeople to the waterwayand the National Trust. Our events from BigCamp to the Wey RiverFestival have been agreat success andenjoyed by manypeople. I hope those ofyou who got to thefestival had a reallyenjoyable weekend – itwas a super successbreaking all records. Itmeant a lot of work for alot of people buteveryone involved or

visiting that I met appeared to be having agood time.

As always with all this work and eventsnone it would be possible without the hardwork and efforts of volunteers, staff andyourself making the most of thenavigations. It goes without saying theBBC play a major part in helping to makethe festival such a success but alsoencouraging others to venture out andexplore the waterway – thank you!

About 30 members and friends enjoyedthe Fun Day on the 5th August. Althoughtheweatherwasshowery itwasnot enoughtodampen thespirits or thebarbequewhichwas well used throughout the day. Ourvisitors included James and Hazel Bell onGabriel. Unfortunately poor James hurt hisback but made a good recovery aftertreatment by a paramedic team.

Another visitor was Peter Jones who was amember between 1968. and 1971 and whonow lives in Auckland, New Zealand. He

was thrilled to be shown around the clubwhich in his day was mainly a large boatworkshop. He told us about the originalamateur forming techniques for the clubhire boats which involved using fan heatersto reduce the curing time and lots of holeswhere the resin didn’t release from theformers properly!

The afternoon darts tournament was wonby Mark Wilson and in theevening there were two roundsof killer skittles, also won byMark! His trophy, number two intheseriesmadebyDickDolton, was well deserved.

The Heritage weekend cruise to OldWoking Palace took place on September9th.

Fiesta, Merlin's Wey, Gentle Dreamer,Bernadine, Tanya, Shieling and Tristan IIImade their way to the Moorings onSaturday afternoon, with Tina and Jameshitching a ride with Mel and Rhys the nextday. We left in good weather onthe Sunday morning down the narrow andwinding channel to the palace, to watch thefalconry display, and were given aconducted tour of the grounds. Some

membersentered into the spirit byadorningfancy dress! We left in somewhat windyweather, having had an enjoyable day.

Wey and Arun Canal Trust DonationNigel Searle

With the new Compasses Bridge at Alfold finished, a donation from waterwayenthusiasts has boosted the Wey & Arun Canal Trust’s other initiatives in the area.

The trust’s focus is now on restoring more of the canal’s Summit Level to navigation.

The £1,000 given by North and East London branch of the Inland WaterwaysAssociation (IWA)will go towards other projects being planned for this Surrey sectionof the Wey & Arun.

A cheque for the donationwas presented to trust chairmanSally Schupke by the IWAbranch chairman, Tim Lewis.

Timwaswithother volunteers from theLondonWaterwayRecoveryGroupwhospenta weekend working on final landscaping tasks at Compasses Bridge, which is at theAlfold entrance to the Dunsfold Park aerodrome and business complex.

'My IWA branch was looking to make a donation to a worthy cause and contributingto the progress of the Wey & Arun is certainly worthwhile' he said. 'We are delightedat the progress being made in Surrey.'

If you'd asked us atthe end of Maywhether we weregoing away onWhisper, our answerwould have been,'hopefully!' It'samazing whatdetermination and acouple of days in the'not so dry' dockachieves! We finallyset off with Brian( h e l m s m a n ,navigator, engineerand toilet emptier) andJackie (first mate, cook, lock winder, shopper and logwriter) en-route for who knows where.

We were blessed with fabulous weatherwhich was a real contrast to last year. Thebeautiful Thames in all her glory, was full tobursting with enthusiastic boaters, makingmooring a little challenging at times. Weencountered a large cruiser in Abingdonwhichwasdetermined tomoor in frontof us,despite being too large for the space. Thefemale crew thought that we were makingrather a fuss because we didn't like havingtheir overhanging tender thrust through ourcratch under the canopy! Howunreasonable we are! Once they realisedthat we weren't happy with thearrangement, they tried again, but this timewith their anchor hanging from the bow. Itwas nearly pistols at dawn, but after'buzzing' the moored boats for about 20

minutes, they finally gave up. Should youencounter Sundowner on your travels, itwould be wise to make sure that you don'thave even a hair's breadth at either end ofyour boat!

With the Thames comes lovely views and afeeling of space and should you feelinclined, you can even open the throttle fora while. Friendly lock keepers do all thework and give a cheerful wave as youdepart.....except at Runnymeade!

Within the week, we arrived at the Duke'scut entrance to the Oxford Canal. A coupleof hours later, we celebrated by havinglunchatThrupp'sBoatmanpub. Inaddition, the shops aren't too far should you wish tovisit and there are all the boat facilities youneed. They'll even provide you with a free

private mooring if you showyour BBC club card.

It's always interesting to seeany improvementsundertaken by Canal & RiverTrust eachyear, and this timewe've been impressed withan electronic flow warningsystem. This means you nolonger have to peer under abridge to spot the gauge tosee if it's safe to proceed. Inaddition, a very heavy liftbridge near Lower Heyfordhas been given an electricmotor to assist, which is a real relief forthose crew who are vertically challenged!

Madness comes in different guises, andwewere taken aback by the drunken boaterwho could barely stand up when operatingthe lock! He was on his way to the pub, hesaid! Obviously the two large empty Vodkabottles weren't sufficient?!

For those who have yet to venture onto theOxford Canal, it really is worth it.Sometimes you travel under trees andwindyour way through gentle curves and atother points you have superb views overthe countryside. It's peaceful and calm andis generally well maintained. The toilet /rubbish emptying and water fillingopportunities are plentiful but don't forgetyour old BW key and a long water hose.

You know something is wrong when anangry voice shouts...'Oi you!'. Theproblem,it transpired, was that 'tick over' when

passing stationary boats is just not slowenough for some people! After threateningto kill Brian, the bloke disappeared!Fortunately, most people you meet on thecanals and rivers are pleasant, friendly andhelpful!

We like to visit Stratford on Avon as thebasin is a good place to moor for 48 hours, stock up the larder and visit the theatre tosee the latest RSC production. Apart fromlock 53 which defies all engineering sense,it's a good run down the flight but amooringspace isn't assured. This timenot onlyweretherenospaces in thebasin, butallmooringon the River Avon had been suspendeddue to a 3 day regatta. The problem wasthat there was no notification of this! Itseems that Canal & River Trust and theRiver Avon Authority don't communicate!Fortunately, just as we were wonderingwhat to do, a boat left and we were able totake the space.

On our way back up the Stratford Canal, alot of boats were being affected by theshallow water. Luckily, Sea Otters have ashallow draft and a V-shaped hull, so wecontinued without any problems!

We don't often go out for pub meals but afew we tried on our trip are worthmentioning.......

The Navigation pub on the Grand Unionturned out to be worth visiting if you like aninteresting menu. We visited it afterspending the day at Baddesley Clinton, aNT property.

Artichoke in Chester is an excellent bistro/cafe/ bar and a fabulous place to eat, whatever your food tastes. Everything isfreshly cooked from local ingredients.

Another pub inChester,The OldHarkers Arms,provides good qualityand varied food inp l e a s a n tsurroundings.

We have never beenby boat to Chesterbefore, but this year,we decided that wewould goandexplore.Open top bus is anexcellent way ofseeing Chester. It's avery interesting cityand well worth a visit.Mooring isn't plentifulbut despite most of it

being in the city, it's relatively quiet. Theshops are varied and useful. We actuallyspent a fair amount of time here as it's sucha fascinating place, so well worth the effort.

Having gone this far, it would have beenrude not to continue to Ellesmere Portwhich was our most northerly visit. It'sprobably worth just one trip to the NationalWaterways Museum, but one day will besufficient. There's been a valiant attempt tocreate an interesting venue but sadly, it'sseriously under funded and there aremissed opportunities to make the outsideattractions more interesting.

Life is like an echo: There’s a boat moored at Thrupp on the Oxford canal where theowner regularly displays a blackboard with poignant words of wisdom written on it.When we came past in March his thought for the day was:

Life is like an echo. If you don’t like what you are getting back maybe you shouldchange what you are sending out.

This edition of Stern View should, perhaps bewritten by our good friend Adrian as he hasdone a sterling job of managing the Club whilstwe, and several other committee membershave been cruising during the summermonths.I would like to propose a huge 'thank you' toAdrian for all that he has done for the Club.

If you have visited the club recently will haveseen the splendid new buoyancy jackets thatwe can offer our boat hirers. These werepurchased with the aid of a grant received fromWoking Council to whom we are very grateful. It is worth remembering that it was through ourparticipation at Byfleet Parish Day that we firstmet Councillor Richard Wilson who hasprovided the Club with considerable help topurchase our hire boat maintenance shed andnow the buoyancy aids. According to a localsurvey Byfleet Boat Club is recognised as oneof the most important assets of the village andwe should be thankful to those members whohelped support our presence at this years’Parish Day celebrations.

The Club was well represented at this years’IWA festival on the Erewash Canal in IIlkestonwith five members making the journey by boatplus, it was nice to meet up with some formermembers and potential new members.

Our own summer cruise this year ticked off anumber of bucket list items including passagethrough the Standedge tunnel (amazing) viatheHuddersfield Narrow canal. Interestingly, inthe autumn edition of the IWA magazineWaterways there is an article entitled 'ClimbingEverest' about making an identical journeyexcept that they had the support of CRT staffand volunteers to see them through all of the 74

locks. We travelled on to the northern mostpoint on the waterways network in Ripon viaSelby and York despite what the River Ousecould throw at us (literally). I need to check withTerry andChris onBarleyTwistas to howmanylocksandmileswe finally completed. I think thatnext years’ cruise may be amore genteel affairexploring the Thames. Anyone interested?

As we now approach autumn and winter welook forward to a number regular items on ourcalendar. By the time this edition of By theWeyis published we will have enjoyed the GuildfordRiver Festival; the BBC is an official sponsor –I hope that many of you were able to go.

This month will be our working weekend whereweneedasmanyvolunteersaspossible tohelpwith the numerous tasks that need to be donearound theClub.Thiswill be followedbybonfirenight at ourownmooringsatWarrenFarm, thenin November we have D & D day and ourilluminated boat precession. More details canbe found on the club website and I will, ofcourse, be sending out email and textreminders nearer the time. On this subject, dowe have your correct email address andmobilenumber? If you have changed recently and arenot receiving emails ormessages from the clubplease let us have your current contact details.

It just remains for me to wish you all happy andsafe boating and I look forward to seeing manyof you at the Club over the next weeks andmonths.
