Literally, “the right to control copying”exclusive legal right of an originator to print, publish, perform, film, or record literary, artistic, or musical

Who owns the copyright?

(Generally) the creator of the work

Originality is a requirement!

What is public domain?

belongs to everyone and is not protected by copyright.

How to use copyrighted works

A copyright notice is not requiredNot mandatory to register because it does

not enhance protection, but… can be used as evidence in court Easier to ask for permission from you to

use your work

How to figure out if the work you want to use is copyrighted

ALL original work is copyrighted, unless ineligible/ expired

Remember:A work does NOT need to be registered,

published, or have a copyright notice on it to be protected by copyright.

If a notice is used, you will see the symbol - © the date the name of the owner
