July 2008 July 2008 The Shofar Congregation Beth Evergreen of Evergreen, Colorado “Shelter from the Storm” By Rabbi Jamie Arnold Where am I right now, as I write these words? I am in the Social Hall at Beth Evergreen (CBE). No surprise, right? Well, this time, it’s different. This night, even the social hall has become the sanctuary, literally. As of this writing, the Emergency Shelter Program (ESP) is hosting its first official guests, providing food and a warm, safe place to sleep to folks who would otherwise be out in the snow facing single digit temperatures. As such, we have now lived even more fully into what it means to be inclusive and hospitable, responding to the call of hachnasat orchim, receiving the honor of welcoming guests. I feel grateful, thankful to be a part of a community that has invested in (and led) the effort to bring so-called ‘outsiders’ inside, offering under housed neighbors, in the words of recently honored poet laureate, Bob Dylan, ‘shelter from the storm.’ It feels so good to see CBE be a sanctuary in this way. Gratitude. It’s gratifying in part because we have invested so much time and effort in this just cause. Justice. It’s part of our effort to pursue justice for all, to pray with our feet, to paraphrase Abraham Joshua Heschel. Witnessing the first fruits of our collective effort to meet this communal need is deeply gratifying. Amazingly, earlier this morning marked another milestone for Beth Evergreen when we became the new home for a 96-year old survivor. Born on the east side of Berlin shortly after World War I, she managed to escape from Germany to New York in 1935 as the climate there was turning bitter and brutal. She arrived here in Evergreen in December 2016 just in time to be the guest of honor at a family bar mitzvah. She is an exquisite Torah scroll. After spending decades dormant in a crowded ark in the Big Apple, this Tree of Life, newly transplanted to be tended by our hands, will treat our hearts and minds with its fruit, and its story shall continue. Truly, to be a host is to be blessed. The holy Ark of the Covenant described in the Torah of Moses (the one that envisioned a just society free from hunger and homelessness) carried two sets of the Tablets of the Law, the Ten Commandments. And now, our ark, houses two sacred scrolls – on this same day that our synagogue became a refuge from the winter storm to two souls that otherwise would literally be out in the cold. Middah of the MonthJudaism nurtures our purpose in life to make this world a better place (tikkun olam). The individual and lifelong work of cultivating character traits (tikkun middot) is central to the work of repairing the world. Middot of the month of Tevet (Dec 30- Jan 27): Gratitude (Hacarat hatov) & Justice (Tzedek)“Recognizing the good” - Gratitude opens the heart. Dr. Alan Morinis says,“... When you live charged with gratitude, you will give thanks for anything or anyone who has benefitted you, whether they meant to or not. Imagine a prayer of thanks springing to your lips when the driver in the car next to you lets you merge without protest, or when the water flows from the tap, or the food is adequate?”

Seeking to understand the needs of our society and acting to address them are our obligations. Acknowledging in gratitude that which we have may open our hearts to that which others have not and empower us to take action to right the injustice.

Can an “attitude of gratitude” encourage an expression of justice?

Middah of the month of Sh’vat (Jan 28 – Feb 26): Patience (Savlanut) and Anger (Ca’as) The Hebrew root of savlanut (patience) means to bear or suffer, the ability to hold emotional discomfort. Ca’as (anger) is the quintessence of emotional discomfort.

Rav Wolbe uses the image of carrying a load to describe Savlanut. Each relationship we have comes with a certain load we need to carry … to stay in the relationship. We need Savlanut to deal with our own baggage and that of our children, partners, parents and friends.

Dr. Alan Morinis uses the metaphor of a lit match and a fuse. We practice Savlanut by extending the distance between the match and the fuse.

January & February At Beth Evergreen!

“Hacarat Hatov”Director of Education and Life Long LearningTara Saltzman

Recently I attended a directors’ conference in Massachusetts. Lumbering sleepily to the hotel breakfast bar, this simple chalkboard sign reframed and inspired my day.

Some other “goods” to be thankful for: the support from families for the new Saturday programming this year. ShabbaShul has become an opportunity to welcome new families and explore new ways to learn together. Hebrew Lab is growing in effectiveness and focus and we’re grateful to the staff and all the volunteers who help Todd lead it.

We’re incredibly grateful for our madrichim who keep us on track and remind us to keep it fun! We’re deliciously thankful Amanda Greenberg runs the once a month pizza snack fundraiser and for Rachel Brunfon’s tireless efforts spearheading the Sukkot Family day. We are grateful for all the support Religious School has received enabling us to: purchase classroom Tzedakah box sets for PreK -2nd grade, hands on classroom maps and manipulatives for all classes, sponsor 2 teachers for enrichment training and new chrome books for Hebrew Lab to come. “Recognizing the Good” – Hacarat ha tov

Saturday, February 25 – Shabbat Mishpatim9:30AM Shabbat Service & Bagel Table: Shabbat Shekalim - The truth about taxes.

Sunday, February 267PM Havurat Shirah (CBE Singers) rehearsal with conductor Mandi Ogle. ALL ARE WELCOME! For more information contact Rabbi Jamie or Mandi.

Monday, February 27 – Rosh Chodesh Adar

Tuesday, February 287PM New class: “Kabbalah 101 – Experiencing Unseen Reality” with Rabbi Jamie. Visit kabbalahexperience.com to register.

“yeah…it sure is” I thought quite unexpectedly feeling awakened to gratitude.

Family Chavurah Fun

Families enjoyed an early Chanukah celebration at CBE with a delicious potluck and Shabbat service. The arts and crafts stations were enjoyed by all with card making; chamsa flag decorating; dreidel playing; cookie decorating and, of course, eating. It was miraculous to see the reflection of the light of the sweet candles in the eyes of all present.

Toys for TotsBy Nancy Friedman

CBE, in cooperation with the US Marine Corps, collected toys for its Toys for Tots Program. The primary goal of Toys for Tots is to deliver, through a new toy at the holidays, a message of hope to less fortunate youngsters that will help them become responsible, productive, patriotic citizens. Thank you, CBE, for all your generous donations! Shown with the toys (l-r) are Nancy Friedman, Toys for Tots Coordinator; Leah Conner; Rabbi Jamie; and Judy Sherman, Chair of the Social Action Committee.

How fitting that the spiritual attributes we’ve decided to focus on this coming month (January/Tevet) are Justice and Gratitude! These traits are poles of one another. The former seeks, while the latter receives. And when the two come together in the same home, in the same heart, well that’s a blessing, maybe even a miracle.

Baruch atah…She’hechiyanu v’kiyamanu v’higiyanu laz’man hazeh.Grateful am I, blessed by life, and this opportunity to stand and bear to witness to this time. AMEN!

One last thing. Try this: Reread Dylan’s lyrics, imaging that CBE [or Torah] is the “She” that said, “Come in…I’ll give ya shelter from the storm.”

‘Twas in another lifetime, one of toil and bloodWhen blackness was a virtue, the road was full of mudI came in from the wilderness, a creature void of form

Come in, she saidI’ll give ya shelter from the storm

And if I pass this way again, you can rest assuredI’ll always do my best for her, on that I give my word

In a world of steel-eyed death, and men who are fighting to be warmCome in, she said

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm

Not a word was spoke between us, there was little risk involvedEverything up to that point had been left unresolved

Try imagining a place where it’s always safe and warmCome in, she said

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm

I was burned out from exhaustion, buried in the hailPoisoned in the bushes an’ blown out on the trail

Hunted like a crocodile, ravaged in the cornCome in, she said

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm

Suddenly I turned around and she was standin’ thereWith silver bracelets on her wrists and flowers in her hair

She walked up to me so gracefully and took my crown of thornsCome in, she said

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm

Now there’s a wall between us, somethin’ there’s been lostI took too much for granted, I got my signals crossedJust to think that it all began on an uneventful morn

Come in, she saidI’ll give ya shelter from the storm

…I’ve heard newborn babies wailin’ like a mournin’ doveAnd old men with broken teeth stranded without love

Do I understand your question, man, is it hopeless and forlornCome in, she said

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm

…Well, I’m livin’ in a foreign country but I’m bound to cross the lineBeauty walks a razor’s edge, someday I’ll make it mine

If I could only turn back the clock to when God and her were bornCome in, she said

I’ll give ya shelter from the storm.

love the diversity. Issues such as clean water, sustainable agriculture and responsible use of the resources available have an impact on all people of the region regardless of their religious and/or political values.

After spending the week with these 60 alums, we are more certain than ever that the work being done at the Arava Institute is worthy of our ongoing support. Essentially, the connections and friendships that are being formed among the students and faculty will form the foundation for a peaceful future within Israel and among its neighbors. Seeing a change by our generation does not seem nearly as likely as the potential represented by the next, as we witnessed first-hand their open mindedness and absolute desire for a peaceful Middle East. Students at the Arava Institute realize that they cannot change the past, but they do see each other as human beings coming from diverse backgrounds each with their own unique circumstances. They believe, as do we, that the cross-cultural bonds being built will be passed down to their children and their children’s children. And that gives us tremendous hope.

On November 13th, when we overnighted at Kibbutz Ketura, a student lead presentation commemorating the 21st anniversary of Yitzhak Rabin’s assassination touched us deeply as we got to see and hear, first hand,

how the current generation sees Rabin’s legacy and its impact on their lives today.

Yes, complicated doesn’t even begin to describe the situation, but the overall consensus is the same: we are all people, humans, living on this planet and we must coexist peacefully, regardless of our differences. We all sang together John Lennon’s Imagine in Hebrew, Arabic and English. Intense does not begin to describe that experience.

We know that many of our donors contributed simply because of our close personal relationship and/or family ties. However, it is our hope that you will consider your connection to the democratic values in Israel and desire to see some degree of world peace in the volatile Middle East, as a starting point, with regards to what your donation is supporting. We hope you will think of the Palestinian Arava students from the West Bank who risk being outcasts from their families and communities to study in Israel in order to escalate the possibility for a better world in their lifetimes and the lives of all people, in many ways.

It became very clear to us that they key factor of achieving new understandings is trust. The programming at the Arava Institute creates multiple touch points of trust between these students. They focus every day on learning how to handle conflict, to listen, and to

resolve difficult situations using proven methods pioneered by Arava faculty and other specialists far beyond the Arava campus.

We encourage you to check out the Arava website at arava.org and learn more about the ongoing work being done there, and perhaps how a worthy student in your circle may become a member of this life-changing phenomenon.

People here in Israel are very quick to say how complicated the situation is and recognize the great barriers that exist towards peace. This is true, however, it is not an excuse to turn our backs and give in to the rhetoric. We have had the chance to look into the faces of these passionate students, to engage in meaningful conversation, to learn from their experience and to understand that the possibility, and probability, for peace does indeed exist.

We have not yet decided if we will return in 2017 for our fourth Israel Ride, but we are certain that we will continue to champion peace in the Middle East through the methodology of the Arava Institute and however else we can. We would strongly encourage you to consider riding and experience this life-changing event yourself. Further, we invite your questions, your comments and your feedback about the ride, the Arava Institute, Israel, etc. With much love,Beth and Jon

Tuesdays With Morim Presents Israel -Colorado Innovation Fund:A bridge between Israeli startups and the US market

7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3Free and open to the community

Gili Elkin will discuss the Israel-Colorado Innovation Fund and how it is connecting Israeli energy startups with the U.S. market at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 3 at Congregation Beth Evergreen, 2981 Bergen Peak Drive, Evergreen. The event is free, and all are welcome to attend. Elkin is the managing director, Strategic Growth of SynTech Bioenergy, a waste-to-energy company located in Denver that is penetrating the Israeli market. She serves on the Board of Directors for the B’nai B’rith of Denver and consults for the Boomtown Accelerator in Boulder. An Israeli lawyer, Elkin has worked at Ernst & Young as a tax consultant, was the founder and CEO of wordprom.com, and has served in the Israeli Defense Forces in a highly classified unit.

With the founding of an Israel–Colorado Innovation Fund, a partnership between Horizon GreenTech Ventures in Israel (the leading incubator related to GE and the Nuclear Research Center) and Innosphere, a 17-year-old accelerator based in Fort Collins and Denver, Elkin’s goal is to invest in Israeli startups focused on energy and to connect startups with the U.S. market by having them participate in Innosphere’s two-year program, which is the technological incubator of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
