How he is Treated

Page 11: By Marcus, Vasco, Beatriz, and M.A.. Ralph (Glogester)

“We may stay here till we die” (Golding 14)

"You got your small fire all right." (Golding, 41)

“Maybe there is a beast....maybe it's only us.” (Golding, 80)

"Piggy was...so full of pride in his contribution to the good of society, that he helped to fetch wood." (Golding, 118) (allgreatquotes)

Defining Quotes

Page 12: By Marcus, Vasco, Beatriz, and M.A.. Ralph (Glogester)

Democracy as apposed to Jacks absolute leadership.

He gives Ralph the idea of organization and giving everyone a chance to be heard.

Recognizes the need for organization and “human rights” from early on.

Considers the conch, (which is the symbol of Democracy) the most important item on the island

Political Representation

Page 13: By Marcus, Vasco, Beatriz, and M.A.. Ralph (Glogester)

He introduces the conch to Ralph which effects

the rest of the boys through out the story.

He gives Ralph intelligent adult-like strategies through out the story, which soon defines him as voice of reason in the book.

He introduces the idea of the fire and his spectacles are what create the fire. This was a very important in the story.

Impact on Story

Page 14: By Marcus, Vasco, Beatriz, and M.A.. Ralph (Glogester)

Piggy’s death in unison with the destruction of

the conch symbolize:

Loss of Civilization

The birth of complete savagery

The end of a short lived democracy

(Side note, Piggy died like a pig, shows Jack’s escalation) (bookrags)

Simon

Page 16: By Marcus, Vasco, Beatriz, and M.A.. Ralph (Glogester)

We look upon Simon with a lot of sympathy,

partly due to his weak physical nature, but mainly because of his intellect and greater understanding of the world, which is something the other boys do not have.

Simon symbolizes spirituality and the recognition between good and evil.

Character Analysis

Page 17: By Marcus, Vasco, Beatriz, and M.A.. Ralph (Glogester)

“What I mean is [. . .] maybe it’s only us” (pg.

80).

“You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you? Close, close, close” (pg. 130).

“I’m the reason why it’s no go […], why things are the way they are” (pg. 130). (This answers Piggy’s question as to why things fall apart.)

Quotes

Page 18: By Marcus, Vasco, Beatriz, and M.A.. Ralph (Glogester)

Simon also is the protagonist of one of the biggest events in the

novel, which is his dialogue with the ‘Lord of the Flies.’ Some of the quotes that emerged during his hallucination include:

“You knew, didn’t you? I’m part of you? Close, close, close.”(Golding, 151)

“I’m the reason why it’s no go […], why things are the way they are” (Golding, 152) (allgreatquotes)

This answers Piggy’s question as to why things fall apart and break up the way they do.

Simon has all of the answers to their questions, but no one listens to

him.

Encounter with the LOTF

Page 19: By Marcus, Vasco, Beatriz, and M.A.. Ralph (Glogester)

Some believe that the talking pig’s head isn’t

a just hallucination, and that it is in fact the actual Lord of the Flies, the Devil, evil incarnate, that is talking to Simon. (schmoop)

This belief is what leads to the idea of Simon being Jesus’s allegory.

Biblical Allegory

Page 20: By Marcus, Vasco, Beatriz, and M.A.. Ralph (Glogester)

Simon has a deep affinity for meditation, and has a very deep, spiritual

connection with nature and animals.

He also has a hinted ability to prophesize, such as the instance where he tells Ralph that Ralph will get home, suggesting that he himself won’t.

His encounter with the talking pig’s head is similar to Jesus’s visit to the Garden of Gethsemane in the night before he was crucified.

During that visit, Jesus went through a period of long and solitary mental suffering, much like Simon in the night before he meets his own tragic death.

Did Simon, like Jesus, die for the sins of the boys? Many conclude that he was the boys’ savior: he had the knowledge of the beast’s true nature, and he had the potential to save the boys from themselves and their fear, but ended up being killed. (shmoop)

Similarities to Jesus

Page 21: By Marcus, Vasco, Beatriz, and M.A.. Ralph (Glogester)

Foreshadows bad news from the start.

The typical bully, crashing sandcastles, throwing rocks, and inflicting pain on others. The only difference is that now he can unleash his inner savage.

He is an example of how a personality can develop horrendously when in a savage environment

Roger

In the Lord of the Flies, the rest of the kids and

especially the littluns represent the common people of society.

They were told what to do and they obeyed commands that were given to them by higher ranked boys, much like in a society and its government.

They also represent helplessness, youthful innocence and were completely dependable on the biguns.
